When viewing a melodrama with an ensemble cast you will notice the difference this will make with how the film functions as a melodrama and how the audience can find it more accessible. A great melodrama to examine with an ensemble cast would be Steel Magnolias (1989), which happens to have a main cast consisting of six characters. Having six main characters can make the film that much more accessible to audience members, since they have a larger chance of finding a character to relate to in this larger cast. A film like Beaches (1988) may be harder to find accessible for many audience members if they can’t find themselves liking or at least relating to one of the two main characters.
