Up last, there is Ophelia the daughter of Polonius and sister to Laertes. Ophelia presents a danger to Hamlet in the form of emotional damage. She loves Hamlet and Hamlet has another performance about how he does not love her in the slightest in act three, scene one when Hamlet says “You should not have believed me, for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it. I loved you not.” The exchange between Hamlet and Ophelia makes Hamlet mad which is not the best state of mind for Hamlet. Again the pattern of dead dads continues with Ophelia when she loses her mind wandering around singing then commits suicide by drowning herself. The King and Hamlet’s mother Gertrude talk about Hamlet’s depression with Hamlet’s friends. They do not know the cause yet. Hamlet’s friends convince the king and queen to watch the play that night. The king and Polonius later decide to spy on Hamlet’s conversations. They her him say the famous line “ To be, or not to be: that is the question”.
However, after the death of Polonius, Ophelia can no longer hold onto her sanity. In his tragic play, Hamlet, William Shakespeare uses Ophelia to display to us the devoted love of a parent, and how the loss of a parent can lead to a sickness of the mind. Polonius was a devoted father to Ophelia, he loves her with all of his heart.
Hamlet once again fails to understand that Ophelia much like himself is only trying to stay loyal to her father, much like what he is doing himself. In addition, Hamlet blames woman for giving birth to such evil and deceiving men like Claudius and himself. When he was talking to Ophelia he told her "Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners? I am myself indifferent honest, but yet I could accuse me of such things that it were better
Ophelia goes mad throughout the story. She is overwhelmed by the loss of her father and the rejection of Hamlet. Her character is seen spiraling down a dark path that also ends in death. Ophelia is depicted as not having control over her actions; speaking and acting erratically. While Hamlet is speaking erratically and behaving oddly, he still maintains control over his actions and movement throughout the story.
“Hamlet kills the unarmed, elderly, eavesdropping Polonius” in his pure rage and in so doing it harms Ophelia by taking away the sole person left who keeps her sane (Rosenberg). Ophelia is at a loss and so she becomes suicidal. Ophelia “took her own life” according to the gravediggers (Shakespeare V. i. 242). Gertrude also says that after Polonius death she became even more insane and was singing when she drowned herself in the river. Ophelia’s “life is filled with woe” and because of Hamlets actions she is forced, in her mind, to kill herself (Rosenberg).
Ophelia is grieving the loss of her father after Hamlet kills him. Ophelia doesn't know that Hamlet killed her father. But Ophelia has gone mad from learning about her father's death. Also, after Hamlet telling Ophelia that she needs to go to a nunnery, Ophelia is a little bit discouraged. She is discouraged because Hamlet had told her before that if Ophelia would sleep with him that they would get married.
King Hamlet is from Denmark and King Fortinbras is from Norway. King Hamlet won the war and the country that won the land was Denmark. King Fortinbras of Norway has been killed in the battle and lost all of his land. King Hamlet died and Claudius became the new king of Denmark. A month later he had married Hamlet's mother, Gertrude.
Ophelia has trusted Hamlet entirely free of doubt, and this sudden change of heart destroys Ophelia emotionally. She begins to go mad due to her inability to cope with the instability of their relationship. Ophelia is found dead due to drowning shortly after. After her death, Hamlet’s opinion towards Ophelia changes once again. Hamlet stumbles upon her funeral and tells Laertes, “I loved Ophelia.
Hamlet has not only become distraught from his conniving and lying stepfather but also his mother, Queen Gertrude as well. The unfaithfulness that Gertrude shows to Hamlet’s father and Hamlet has a toll on him and plays a part in his insanity. In “Hamlet” a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, the death of a character is an occurring event. William Shakespeare uses imagery and allusion to demonstrate the result of manipulation from other characters upon Ophelia, daughter of Polonius, and leading up to her death. Her death was not the consequence of disgraceful actions of her own, but rather by the involvement of others and their influence on her life. Hamlet’s apparent rejection of her love and her father’s personal vindictive leads up to her simple-minded state, entering a world of madness. She has now gone mad, singings nonsense songs and giving people flowers that she has picked from the garden.
In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Hamlet has a unique relationship with Ophelia. Throughout the beginning of the play you learn very little about their relationship. Their relationship was referenced however. In the beginning of the play, Laertes warns Ophelia about Hamlet, claiming he does not actually love Ophelia. Throughout the play it is implied that Hamlet and Ophelia were involved with one another, but never showed the details of their "love."
Shakespeare is knows to make tragic stories which revolve around tragic heroes. In the book Hamlet, hamlet is seen as a tragic hero for several reasons, one of them which is his tragic or fatal flaw procrastination. Often in Shakespeare’s book there is one main tragic hero but in Hamlet there are two, Hamlet and Ophelia. Ophelia who is the love interest of Hamlet is only seen in the play a couple of times, but she is a significant character because Shakespeare portrays her as an innocent women who is seen battling with her true feeling and her women duties.
William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet adapts to many different literary works of the present day. These works include, most notably, “The Lion King” a Disney movie adaptation. The movie shares common similarities in the characters, themes, and conflict, but aside from the similarities the Disney adaptation displays scenes and moments not connected to the movie. The main protagonist, Hamlet is shown in the movie adaptation as Simba, the heir to the lion pride from Mufasa, his father.
In scene 3, Shakespeare introduces Ophelia, the sister of Laertes and a romantic conquest of Hamlet. Laertes warns her to stay away from Hamlet because he feels he will only destroy her honor then dump her. Then, their father, Polonius, walks in and gives Laertes a bunch of advice before he leaves for France. After Laertes leaves, Polonius tells Ophelia to stay far away from Hamlet. Then, the story moves back to Hamlet and the watchmen waiting for the ghost to arrive.
