The year is 1791. A time of immense controversy over the ownership of slaves divided the country. During this time Benjamin Banneker writes to the Declaration’s framer Thomas Jefferson on his outrage on this issue. With great effectiveness, Banneker uses rhetorical strategies of emotional appeal and contrasting the men’s two lives to argue his stand on slavery. In his writing, Banneker uses Jefferson’s own experiences to create an emotional appeal and to convince Jefferson of the unfair treatment happening in America. Banneker brings up the anecdote of when Britain was in control and how Americans were enslaved, to remind Jefferson on how he felt. “recall to your mind...tyranny of British crown were exerted with every powerful effort in order to reduce you to a state of servitude.” (Banneker, Line 1-4). Comparing the two men’s lives, Banneker is showing Jefferson that their opinions on slavery are very similar. “here sir, was a time in which your tender feelings for yourseleves had engaged you thus to declare…” (Banneker, Lines 26-27) Banneker is trying to get through to Jefferson that that there was a time in Jefferson’s life where he felt enslaved, now Banneker is living through same events. So why is Jefferson breaking what he believes in? “you should at the same time counteract his mercies in detaining by fraud and violence so numerous a part of my brethren...” (Banneker, Lines 34-35) . He starts off by reminding Jefferson that, “the British Crown were exerted with every powerful effort in order to reduce you [Jefferson] to a state of servitude.” With this, Banneker establishes that Jefferson was one of the numerous colonists that felt the colonies should not be under British rule. Also, Banneker builds on to the fact that Jefferson was once a servant himself, consequently starting to guilt Jefferson, since Jefferson supports slavery despite once being a “servant” himself.

Banneker's purpose is to argue and persuade against slavery and explain how it's unjustified at a time after the American Revolution and during a time when the House of Burgesses took away African's rights and made them forever bound to slavery brought by the slave codes. He adopts a serene tone in order to calmly and professionally expound on the ideas that he's going to explain to show why slavery is unjustified in his letter to a man of higher authority. Banneker says how slaves still have to go through the “horrors of its condition” even with the colonies becoming free, therefore Jefferson is “guilty” of what he “professedly detested” in Britain. He points out that Jefferson in a way enforces the treatments he tried to escape onto the slaves, or allows slaveholders to. Benjamin Banneker is a very passionate man when it comes to racial issues. In fact, he, himself was the son of a slave, which would indicate that he was a man who has experienced racial complications. Banneker (once educated), decided to become an advocate for racial freedom and equality. Subsequently Banneker wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson in hopes of persuading him to rethink the government’s position on slavery. In the letter Banneker uses allusions, repetition, and religious diction in his writing in hopes to evoke a change in the hypocrisy the colonists’ government has proven to be.
The letter was understandably harsh and severe, but Banneker does this in such a humble manner, that his opinion on slavery can not be argued by Jefferson. Jefferson absolutely has to accept what Banneker is saying because of how he portrayed, and wrote his letter. Banneker starts the letter off with referring to Jefferson as ‘Sir’, and does this in every paragraph to solidify and ensure that he is being polite while still getting his point across. This was to make Jefferson believe what Banneker was saying, to show Jefferson that he does have respect towards him and that he is taking this letter seriously so Jefferson should too.
