In Joseph Campbell’s book The Hero with a Thousand Faces, he writes about the many different stages of the hero’s journey. He claims that the hero’s journey, or the monomyth, has existed as a guideline for authors and storytellers for centuries. The authors of these stories may have consciously utilized the monomyth, or the stories may be so commonly used that it became the natural way of telling a story about a hero. The monomyth is organized into three different phases: the initiation, separation, and return. Within these phases are the different encounters the hero has. An important aspect of the hero’s journey is readers and viewers seeing someone who is not a god, overcoming obstacles and being a hero to their people. This hope it brings the audience is why the monomyth has persisted across place and time. The hero’s flaws and mistakes are equally as important as their successes, because it reminds the audience that they are human. In modern times, Moses and Odysseus are not always seen as heroes. Teachers and scholars are finding that as society has changed, opinions on what makes a person a hero have also changed. In addition, not everyone saw Moses and Odysseus as heroes when their stories were originally told. Moses, more so than Odysseus, shares many traits with a failed hero, but the author of Exodus still presents him as a successful hero. The Hero’s Journey Joseph Campbell has come up with this idea that there is one three-stage formula- in which he calls the “Hero’s Journey”. This formula is the structure of the story, and is the basic form or shape of something. Most houses have four walls and a roof, they all look slightly different on the outside, but they mostly share this basic structure. Campbell says that although most stories are different on the outside, stories are almost always structured around these three stages. The first stage is when the hero leaves their everyday world and enters into another world, the second stage talks about when the hero is challenged by opposing forces, a series of test they must pass, and whether or not a victory is won.
During his landmark interview in 1988 with Bill Moyers, mythologist Joseph Campbell explained the significance of hero myths and why they continue to be of interest to audiences today. In his interview, Campbell explains that there are two types of heros and how their journeys might be different. Heroes have sacrificed and have a moral objective that inspire average people to want to do something similar. They have a transformation of themselves, that show anybody can change. Odysseus has grown from the man he was before, as now he finds comfort and safety in obeying the gods when in the past he did not consider their wishes. Odysseus has only returned due to Athena and he has recognized that and his compliance is founded in his appreciation and respect for her. Odysseus is now a hero due to the obedience he now has to the gods, founded in a sense of humility. Through Odysseus’ experiences on his journey, he learns the value of obedience and dangers of arrogance and ultimately, become a hero through the lessons learned.
Athena is a major character throughout the book of The Odyssey and is known as the goddess of wisdom and battle. Throughout the course of the book, it is evident that Athena has a weak spot for the main character, Odysseus. Odysseus is trying to return home after the Trojan War, as the other Greek hero’s have already done, however he faces multiple challenges a long the way. Fortunately, for Odysseus, Athena was there to guide him through a few of these troubling situations.

Odysseus starts to learn the importance of being modest through moments of despair. One can perceive a change in character midway through the journey, during his trip to Helio 's Island. Prior to the trip, the crew was deliberately told not harm Helios’s, cattle, for they will suffer the consequences. However, hunger grew in all their bodies leading them to eat the sun god’s cattle. In despair, Odysseus cries to Zeus explaining how he needs a god to save him from starvation.
