Contemporary Art represents direct and indirect views on society. Artists use Art as a tool to express their perspectives on all various sectors of society. Their creations are used as a way to voice their opinions. It can be in a form of protest against an issue or to fortify and communicate their beliefs. Consequently, " Contemporary art seems to exist in a zone of freedom, set apart from the mundane and functional character of everyday life, and from its rules and conventions" (Stallabrass, 2004). Two Artists that convey the sense of freedom in their projects by working outside the Art world system are Christo and Michael Heizer. Their projects are innovative and definitely ambitious. This aspect of his life made him interested in East-West relations which shaped the culture and life of 20th Century. Germany is the only place in the world where its East and its West met in a dramatic situation due to its past and present story. Therefore, The Reichstag in Berlin was the ideal choice to represent the nation's struggles and story. The Reichstag is known for being under the jurisdiction of various governments and along with its intriguing past history, it became the perfect symbol to represent Germany's story. It is a Victorian building that belongs to the German Nation. The project was held at a time when Germans were questioning their identity and their future ahead. It began in 1972 and till the present day, it is still under construction. The City artwork consists of five phases of enormous geometric forms, walls and other free standing structures. It is built with natural area soil, found rocks and dyed clay as well as concrete and granite. The City project was influenced by the Native American buildings tradition and the ancient cities of Central and South America with which Heizer became familiar through the work of his anthropologist father. The solitude area of The City gives it an element of strength. The extended landscape around this contemporary artwork has unique wildlife and important geological features that forms part of this creation. The ladies on The View talked about art being a form of expression. Everybody needs everybody to express and communicate about tough situations. One of the ladies talked about a white artist during the Civil War who created paintings that showed how the African Americans were being treated. The Theory Toolbox “Differences” chapter discussed this idea too.

This period was important to the U.S, because it was the beginning toward people from various parts of the world being able to keep connected with one another. This period in history bought the computer the internet. The internet is what enabled not only different people to stay connected with one another but it also enabled research to be done quicker.
Ronald Reagan gives the “Remarks at the Brandenburg Gate” speech at the Brandenburg gate in Berlin, as many previous along with future presidents have/will speak there. ”We come to Berlin, we American presidents, because it is our duty to speak in this place of freedom.” (1,Reagan) The main point that Ronald Reagan is trying make with the speech may be “Es gibt nur ein Berlin” which translates to: There is only one Berlin. I was born in Mannheim, Germany. I am educated in architectural studies at the Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe, and later at the Universities of Munich and Berlin. I was Inspired by Adolf Hitler’s oratory power, so I joined the National Socialist party [NAZI] in January 1931. I believed Hitler and the Nazis could answer the communist threat and restore the glory of the German empire that he considered lacking under the Weimar Republic.

During the beginning of the “Cold War”, Berlin was an area where Europeans were able to relocate to without having to cross the international borders of Europe. In response to this east Germany, authorities thought it would be best to build a “wall” that surrounded West Berlin. After the East German government had given permission to stop the immigrants from moving into Germany the premier decided that he wanted to close its border forever. The Wall was completed within a night and day and was built with barbed wire and concrete block, it divided Berlin from one side to the other. For years after West Berlin became the hot end of the “cold” war as nuclear weapons faced off across the wall.
The building of the Berlin Wall resulted in an international crisis as it caused outrage and unrest throughout the world. Germany became a creature of the Communist-capitalist conflict (Source B). The struggle did not remain in Germany, instead it spread and the divide between capitalist and communist countries became greater. The conflict in Germany was a model of what people were experiencing all around the world at the time. This international division became more prominent and was referred to as the Iron Curtain.

This research was carried out not to only show awareness toward the society but also why people should take art seriously. Often times, we can see lots of people debating whether art is important or not. This happened because the lack of exposure and knowledge that has been taught to them. Art can help to shape the society and affect the society to broaden their view of perspective in life by referring on the artworks because each work of art can give different meanings to life.

In the following essay, I will analysis the work of Walter Gropius, an early modern German architect and how his designs had an impact on an improving society and his moral ideas. I will also discuss whether Modernist ideas and principles may still be relevant to contemporary design through the work of Gropius.
