The Odyssey by Homer follows the story of a man who left his family to go fight a war in Troy; with the help of his smart decisions and the help of others around him he finds himself having a very successful homecoming after 20 years of being gone. Odysseus, the hero of The Odyssey, is a very cunning man who knows how to get away with anything, with escaping from a cyclops to following orders. In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy has been knocked unconscious after she is locked out of her storm cellar, she awakens not in Kansas, but rather MunchkinLand; Dorothy is confused in the colorful wonderland she has woken from, she wishes to go home and Glinda the Good Witch gives her the advice of following the yellow brick road to the Wizard, the Wizard will help her …show more content…
Heroes value their time period culture by showing courage and bravery in every action they make; with The Odyssey, Odysseus has to put one hundred percent effort on every single action he makes, because one single mistake could cost him his own life. In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy is relied on by her friends to bring them to the Wizard to get their wishes, with courage and bravery they get to the wizard a successfully get their wishes. It 's very interesting because without heroes we would have no change in society, because heroes are the change we need. Joseph Campbell said “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”, and he couldn 't have been more accurate. We as a society need heroes because of the problems we face, occasionally we as a society face a conflict bigger than us; for example, Dorothy facing the conflict that she wants to go home but the Wizard said tomorrow, she stepped up
Odysseus is known as a very honorable man recognized as brave, noble, and a hero in the Odyssey. He is described one way, but his actions are contradicting towards his distinguishable character. In Homer’s The Odyssey, it can be argued that Odysseus is too deceitful, narcissistic, and pretentious to be considered an honorable hero. To support this, I will be analyzing the use of the word “honor” in situations where Odysseus was described as a man with great honor by the gods.
Pride and honor The suitors seem dangerously proud, especially when Odysseus returns. In the end, the suitors have dishonored Odysseus and must pay for this. Justice Odysseus, like Orestes, will eventually be a deliverer of justice. Justice takes time. Neither Orestes nor Odysseus can act immediately.
In Book 9 of The Odyssey, Odysseus demonstrates many qualities of an epic hero. His courage is showcased when he gets stuck in a cave with the cyclopes and manages to think of an escape route using the sheep. His quick thinking and bravery are exemplary and serve as a reminder of why he is an epic hero. Odysseus demonstrates his courage and strength of character in the first epic hero quality we see him portray. This is evidenced by his willingness to lock himself in with the cyclopes despite the danger.
Thousands of people join our military and risk their lives to fight for their country. After many years of fighting in war, soldiers are no longer who they used to be. When they return home, they are looked down upon, treated badly, and aren’t given the treatment needed to recover. The struggles and obstacles these veterans face on their journey home and once they arrive forever face. In the epic poem, Odyssey by Homer, it shows the obstacles a soldier has to face on their journey.
The Heroism of Odysseus and Louie Zamperini Emptiness is all they feel, there must be a way home, but how will they find it with so many obstacles in the way. In the books Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and The Odyssey Homer by Robert Fitzgerald, both main characters Louie Zamperini and Odysseus have proven that they are heros in the story. They are both lost and are in search for their way home although often, certain things get in their way. Through this tough journey they defeat each enemy that comes their way, well through a long period of time of course. The great Louie Zamperini was an olympic athlete who was very known in his town, he got drafted to the military during the war against Japan.

Some of the most incapable leaders will hide their vast incompetencies under a spark of wisdom or strength that most think defines their career.
The Odyssey, a story based on a great warrior who not just shows his mind but his faults. One fault being his pride. As of the day he went to fight the Trojan War, he was lost at sea for 20 years. Odysseus fought with smart and the hope of being able to defeat everyone in his path. One example of this is Odysseus built the trojan horse which helped him win the Trojan war.
It is often wondered how words are formed or created. Many of our words are derived from different older cultures, like the civilization of Ancient Greece. An example of this is the word museum which comes from the word muse. The Muses were greek goddesses of the fine arts who were prayed to by philosophers, musicians, and artists who seeked inspiration. The Greek poet and author of the famous stories The Iliad and The Odyssey was one of them.
Odysseus, in The Odyssey by Homer, and I both demonstrate self-restraint. One time Odysseus shows self-discipline is when he’s in the cyclops’ cave and stabbed his eye. The cyclops “squatted in the breach with arms thrown wide for any silly man or beast that bolted” (907). Odysseus restrains himself from running the first time he sees a way out. Instead he stays back and plans for a better way out.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
The Odyssey by Homer is an exemplary story that teaches life lessons to those going on a journey for themselves. It illustrates how the challenges and obstacles one may face can help someone become a better leader. The Odyssey highlights one man, Odysseus, a man filled with excessive pride, experiencing the wrath of the god Poseidon. He expects to arrive at his home, Ithaca, safely to reunite with his wife, Penelope, but unfortunately faces many temptations and setbacks. Due to the challenges he faces, it prevents him from arriving home as early as he thought he would.
Both Odysseus and I have shown pride. In The Odyssey, Odysseus and his men are going to fight in the Trojan War. Odysseus found a way to win the war. He and his men built a horse and Odysseus told his men to hide in the horse late at night. The next morning two of Odysseus’ men went to go talk to the Trojan’s leader.
Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.
Heroism, tends to be difficult to define and remarkably ambiguous in literary works. In the Odyssey, however, Homer clearly defines a hero as a humble, determined, and loyal individual; thus, according to Homer, it is not enough to claim to be a hero, but it is also important to exhibit those qualities that Homer values as heroism. Odysseus, despite claiming heroism, upholds these traits inconsistently, as seen in his taunting of Polyphemus. In contrast, Telemachus, Odysseus’ overlooked son, dramatically grows up over the course of the epic and ultimately reveals his truly heroic qualities by the end of the poem. Thus, because Odysseus claims to be a hero, but fails to remain humble, determined, and loyal throughout the epic, he is not a hero.
“If you can tell me who your heroes are, I can tell you how you are going to turn out. It is really important to have the right heroes.” – Warren Buffet. Many people are looking for heroes in wrong places, and misunderstanding the term hero itself. Strength, bravery, courage, and honesty are the things most people think when the name hero pops.
