Over the past three and a half years I have spent my life studying in school. I have studied for hours and hours about the field of criminal justice; the reason it exists, its history and development, theories that are used to explain topics in criminal justice, and cases that have been monumental in changing the way that criminal justice works. While all of these are great to learn about the field of criminal justice itself cannot be learned from reading textbooks and memorizing theories. This is why I am interested in an internship with the Griffin Police Department. I want to learn how the criminal justice system is in action, how things actually play out outside of the scholastic setting. It is easy to learn about a subject from a book, but it is an entirely different matter to learn about a subject through real life experience. I hope to learn how to serve and protect while implementing the law correctly, especially in today’s world when the level of support for police officers is very low and the level of misconduct cases concerning the police are very high. It is not easy to know what to do in every situation, especially when some reactions are needed with very little or no time to think about. I look forward to seeing the different ways that officers deal with cases and the same or different outcomes that they lead to. Griffin Police Department has done a very good job of dealing with a lot of hard cases, but not falling into the trap of police corruption or police brutality. I am interested to see what sets the Griffin Police Department aside from other cities, which have a similar crime rate, but suffer from police corruption and police
“Frequent exposure to media reports of police abuse or corruption is a strong predictor of perceptions of misconduct and supports the belief that is common.” (France-Respers 1). But unfortunately, it also brings me disheartened feelings. Recently, I was on twitter and I stumbled across a video of a young white male who was roughly about twenty to twenty-five years of age who was being handled so aggressively by about six officers while he was NOT resisting.
Officers and detectives make mistakes, but in the case of Calvin Buari, it cost him 22 years of his life. There are a multitude of different types of mistakes an officer can make, but the ones shown in the podcast were mistakes of the heart– which occur when an officer makes a decision knowing at the time they take the action that it is wrong (“Police Errors Are Opportunities to Build Trust.”). So in order to prevent these types of mistakes, officers need to understand what is expected of them with clear expectations and reinforcement. Police mistakes are the reason why community-police relationships are very strained at times. Novotney). We see that there are positives when it comes to training the police. This police training began because of one major reason and that reason was that in 2005 police misconduct had reached an all time high in New Orleans. There were a lot of high profile beatings and unjustified shootings by the police. This lead on to the police being trained so that there would be less violence used against civilians and so that there would be less chaos in the community.

Although we hope our Police force will use their powers for good, but sometimes police misconduct can occur. Often, the police are under great pressure to act as quick as possible, espcially in a murder case and if the murder victime is white, a child, police officer, or prominent. For example, In the 1990’s the case of Rodney King, that not only shows a racist issue within the criminal justice system, but also the issue with abuse from police officers, but changed the country’s views on the LA police force. Twenty- Seven years ago,Rodney King was brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers.

Police brutality is a issue that’s very important in America and it’s happening in many different states all over the country. It shouldn’t be happening at all, and in order to fix this, we have to start somewhere. The American system of government can solve these type of problems with requiring more training hours inside of every police station, and they should be interested in it because this is causing many different conversations throughout the country. This is a very good topic to study and research because it’s interesting to learn about. However, it is interesting in a sort of way that doesn’t make you feel good or entertained, but instead makes you ready to step in and make a change for the better.
Students in the criminal justice department are taught that our main objective in the justice system and our careers is to serve and also protect those involved in our community. For as long as I can remember, my goal in life has been to provide service by protecting and serving those who are close to me. My penchant for service is what eventually led me to the Criminal Justice program at Valdosta State University. This passion for service began at a very young age when my life was turned upside down when I relocated from Puerto Rico to the state of Georgia due to a tragic car accident that led to the end of my father’s life. Prisoners say, “all correction officers are disrespectful and don’t care about how much we suffer in this prison.” This group, correction officers, are some really elite guys, they have a really tough job in their workplace. All over society there is people that say, “Ohh correction officers are crooked and are overpaid.” Correction officers are the ones that get there hands dirty with all the prisoners that have murdered, raped and have broken the law in any way possible. Correction officers might be disrespectful, but they might have a reason.
In the interview with Officer Richard Bucklin, I asked him questions regarding his experiences as a police officer, the highs and lows of being a police officer, his opinions about recent controversial police topics and the challenges he faces everyday. All of his answers were very interesting and informational. I learned a lot when interviewing Officer Bucklin. I started off by asking Officer Bucklin how he got started in his field of work? Officer Bucklin responded saying that he needed a steady job that had a weekly pay.
I come from a family of law enforcement. I have always wanted to continue the family tradition and work in criminal justice, but I was never sure exactly what field I wanted to focus on. My view on law enforcement, specifically police officers, has been narrow. In the past, my uncle was involved in a shooting in which his partner lost his life and my uncle was shot and left in critical condition. Growing up knowing this has helped me to understand how dangerous it can be for law enforcement.
There are three components that make up the criminal justice system – the police, courts, and correctional facilities – they all work together in order to protect individuals and their rights as a citizen of society to live without the fear of becoming the victim of a crime. Crime, simply put is when a person violates criminal law; the criminal justice system is society’s way of implementing social control. When all three components of the criminal justice work together, it functions almost perfectly. For a person to enter the criminal justice system, the process must begin with the law enforcement.
Interning at DFCS has most certainly impacted my personal, professional, and academic goals. Before my internship, I knew I wanted to pursue my Master of Social Work after graduation and had some ideas about potential careers within the social work realm. My internship with DFCS has truly solidified my desire to pursue an MSW. While I have enjoyed my placement at DFCS, the internship has shown me that I don’t think DFCS is necessarily the agency I would like to work with after graduating with my masters. My work with DFCS (and seeing how many of our clients struggle with substance abuse) has solidified my thoughts that I would like to one day work as a substance abuse and mental health counselor.
‘’Most officers enter law enforcement with minimal experience in the field or in handling the moral dilemmas that officers typically encounter. They learn how to perform their jobs, as well as recognize the organizational norms, values, and culture, from their peers and supervisors. While supervisors provide direct, formal reinforcement, officers’ peers offer friendship and informal rewards that, in many cases, hold greater influence than official recognition from the agency’’ (Fitch, 2011). Officers who come across situations where they are unsure what is morally and ethically best to do often turn to their peers for assurance and guidance. Good ethical behavior can easily be influenced by officers and those in law enforcement.
One of the challenges includes job responsibilities and expectations. The law enforcement community and officers may have varying responsibilities when it comes to their jobs, missions as well as professional cultures with varying expectations in regards to the definition of bullying, what constitutes suitable response4s to bullying and the ways it can be prevented. Law enforcement officers and school personnel’s more often operate according to various rules. For instance, school officials have a set of school rules and codes to enforce while law enforcement officers must at all times uphold the law. Another challenge is negative perception.
