While reading “Crispin the cross of lead,” I learned many things. Crispin is a 13 year old boy who becomes a fugitive after his mom dies. While reading this book, i realized there was many themes to this book. But i realized there was one theme that stood out to me and that was bravery. Bravery fits on crispin for many reasons, like when he went to save bear when he was captured in the Furnivals palace.
Crispin is 13, very poor and living with his mom, until she dies. Crispin doesn’t know what to do so he goes to the church and talks to father quinnell. Father quinnell tells him to run, crispin doesn’t know why, until jon acuff and his men start to chase him. When he’s running, he sees father quinnells dead body on the ground. Crispin finally got away, so now he is alone in the forest.
On his journey, he finds an abandoned village, so he checks it out. He hears a man screaming so he asks if he’s okay. He says he is okay, but decrees crispin to swear on a vow that he will be his servile. Crispin is really scared because the man was really big. The man came out and said his name was bear, and also that they

Crispin curious again, he follows bear. John acclifye and his men were waiting for them, and captured bear. He goes back to the green man tavern and asks what to do, the lady replys with run away. Crispin was also told that he is the son of lord Furnival. Right before he leaves the city walls, he stops at a house, coincidentally, that was the house bears friend lived in. Crispin told them he needed to go back to save bear, one vigil said he would take him back. When crispin got to the citadel, he made a vow with john aycliffe that he would not repeat who his father was, if he released bear. He sees bear banged up, and drags him out. Right as john aycliffe exited them out of the city, he breaks his vow and tries to kill bear with his glaive, instead bear stabbed him with his
Then he threw a piece of wood at her. It had hit her in the chest and that is when Mr. Chaney made his move on her. He captured her and brought her back to the bandit camp. Where she ended up thinking that Rooster and laboeuf left her for good. At this point the bandits leave Mattie in the bandit camp with Chaney.
He goes on to the forest and starts a new life there. He finds himself lonely and panics for awhile, when he realized that he was actually hungry. He decides to follow the birds to find food. The first berries gave him diarrhea and vomit.
For example Crispin risks his life and stands up to his lifelong enemy John Aycliffe, “ ‘If you call the guards, I’ll kill you.’ I cried, pushing his face to the floor.” Crispin would have never been brave enough to stand against Aycliffe until now. Additionally, Crispin knows that at any moment the steward could knock him out in one blow, but he continues to pin the man down. Another example of Crispin acting courageous is when Crispin keeps his side of the deal to hand over the cross of lead to John Aycliffe, even though the man is dead.
When he one day stumbles across a mammoth man praying in an abandoned church. The man named Bear is caring, noble, and has a strange spirit of duality, as a Bear would. The solution is Crispin after he is bound to Bear. They head off to Great Wexly because Bear needs some one. Crispin with his curious nature gets in too.
Crispin listens to Bear tell his stories and adventures and learns more of the world. There is one particular story that really stuck out to Crispin and that was the story of how Bear changed his stars. The story goes that Bear’s father gave Bear away to a convent and Bear was to become a monk. Well then one day Bear saw the performers in the square and realized that that was what he wanted to do. So Bear did the only logical thing and ran away from the Convent.
He makes it to the river and crosses to the other side, just in time to stop the hound from getting to him, and he runs away from his
It doesn’t actually display bravery, but rather a confused idea of courage that Tim incorprates throughout his novel. In summation, Tim O’Brien exercises what courage truly means throughout his novel The Things They Carried. He seems to come to a consensus that there truly is no singular meaning to courage as each and every person can interpret it differently. Tim O’Brien’s does an astonishing job exhibiting to the reader what courage truly is and the innumerable ways in which it can be
Another trait that Crispin slowly developed throughout the story was courage. A great example that shows how Crispin developed courage was an event on page 232. On this
One way he tries to be brave is he tries to take the lead in everything. For example, In paragraph 72 There is a not so sturdy bridge and the boys can’t see the other side. Then the main character says “I will go across the bridge.” He starts walking he looks confident but in his head he is hoping they are not following him. If they are not he will have an excuse to go back there and stay there and not leave them behind .
From the book Crispin the Cross of Lead by Avi, the 13 year old protagonist Crispin started off as a runaway from his home in Stromford Village after his mother died because he was wrongly accused of thievery, thus resulting in him being declared a wolf’s head. While on the run Crispin met Bear, who challenged him, protected him, and taught him. In the end, Crispin’s new self was challenged as he risked his life to save Bear in Great Wexley. Throughout the story Crispin matures tremendously, starting off as timid and sinful, then growing to question his background and be more courageous, and finally becoming free and brave.
For example, at one point in the story, Ben shows that he is brave but doesn’t know it yet. For example, Ben states “”I gulped. “I’ve been here five minutes and I already have to face an entire platoon of enemy commandos?”(18-19). This excerpt from the text shows that he is scared, but he will persevere and won’t back out of his problem. That trait shows his real bravery.
` Crispin, a formerly no named peasant, was forced to evacuate his village, Stromford, after being declared a wolfs head by the steward but in the end, wished to pursue something much more complex. The roots of his quest were originally
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
He sulks into the woods, where he learns of fire and eating, and other important senses of survival. Feeling a wish for company, he seeks out a village and finds a cottage with a small family, but is instantly met with the same exile like treatment he received from Victor. After being abused by the villagers, he runs to the forest again. Shelly describes part of this journey in chapter 16, “Nature decayed around me, and the sun became heartless; rain and snow poured;…the surface of the earth was hard and chill, and bare, and I found no shelter.” (Shelly, 83).
