Mary Warren, John Proctor, and Abigail William are they real? Was the play “The Crucible” really based off the hysteria of the salem witch trial? Back in late 1700s a hysteria of a witch trials broke out in Salem Massachusetts. I believe that the the crucible is based on the real hysteria of the salem witch trials because the puritans tried to live their life as the bible told them so, a special court was called to accuse people, and some people for the book “the crucible were real. Puritans followed, and believed everything the bible said. Most puritans believed in witchcraft (American Eras vol. 2) which caused a problem in Salem. Most puritans believed in witchcraft (American Eras vol. 2) which caused a problem in Salem. In Salem some teenage girls in accused a west indian slave woman named Tituba. You couldnt be safe in Salem during this time from being accused of being of a witch. Puritans would accuse other people for doing something suspicious or if they had hate against them. Puritans would also accuse those who did not show up church on Sunday. You would have to have a very good reason why you couldn't show up to church on sunday or you would be pressed to death or hanged.th of “witchcraft”. For example Corey’s husband Giles refused to enter a plea at court for believing that the charges were too ridiculous to merit a response so he was sentence to be crushed beneath a pile of stone until he confessed that he practiced doing witchcraft or he would die from being crushed (Jennifer Stock vol. 6). During the salem witchcraft time one out of nine judges named sewall watched as girls pointing finger at other people saying that they saw them do suspicious thing that could've been witchcraft (The Economist 6). The following people from the book of “The Crucible” were actually real, but their background information were wrong.
