Mary Warren, John Proctor, and Abigail William are they real? Was the play “The Crucible” really based off the hysteria of the salem witch trial? Back in late 1700s a hysteria of a witch trials broke out in Salem Massachusetts. I believe that the the crucible is based on the real hysteria of the salem witch trials because the puritans tried to live their life as the bible told them so, a special court was called to accuse people, and some people for the book “the crucible were real. You couldnt be safe in Salem during this time from being accused of being of a witch. Puritans would accuse other people for doing something suspicious or if they had hate against them. Puritans would also accuse those who did not show up church on Sunday. You would have to have a very good reason why you couldn't show up to church on sunday or you would be pressed to death or hanged.th of “witchcraft”.
