The times back then were terrible. The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953 about The Salem Witch Trials of 1692.McCarthyism was the “witch hunt” for the communist in 1953.the parallels between The Crucible and McCarthyism are naming names,lack of proof ,and reststance. The first reason they are parallel is because of naming names.Hollywood director Elia Kazan went in front of the HUAC twice.The first time he did not confess and names. The second time which was three months later he gave eight names which were Lewis Leverett , J.Edward Boomerang , Phobe Brand ,Morris Carovosky , Toby Kraber , Paula Miller , CLifford Odets , and Art Smith (Doc A). In relation to the story told in Document A about McCarthyism the same thing went on in the story in Document B about The Salem Witch Trials.. Betty Harris, and Abigail Williams named names during the Salem Witch Trials.They gave eleven names they claimed they “ saw with the devil”. Joseph McCarthy claimed to have a list of 205 people they were in the state department that were communist. President Truman received a letter from Joseph McCarthy saying “ he posse 57 communist in the state department” , In the following weeks the number of pele rose to 81and then it shave down to 10 (Doc C). In relation to the story about the lack of evidence of Joseph McCarthy’s list of people the story in Document D can relate to to the topic of lack of proof which was also in the times of The Salem Witch Trials. Basically, during the times of the Salem Witch Trials the court relied upon spectral evidence. Meaning , that went on what people said which means they went on invisible evidence.
