When you hear emotion, what do you think of? It is usually the feelings you get when a specific event occurs. It is natural to have thought of the feelings of sadness, anger, fear, joy, or scared, It would have never crossed my mind that the word emotion used to mean something completely different. We will explore, in depth, the history, the interesting aspects, and why I choose the word emotion. The meaning of emotion has shifted drastically over time. In the 1570s, the word had the meaning of “moving, stirring, agitation”(Online Etymology Dictionary). It was actually in the 1650s when the word again changed to “a sense of strong feeling” (Online Etymology Dictionary). She wanted to share her story about what it was like to grow up in the middle of the civil rights movement and what it was like to be one of the nine students who were the first African Americans to integrate a public all white school. The most common words that cause emotion are forms of the word “kill”, “hopeless”, “paralyzed”, “crushing” and “sorrow”(57, 67, 109). These words can cause an array of emotion depending on the reader such as sadness, sorrow or pity towards the characters. Emotions are additionally reported to be composed of action readiness and phenomenological tone. Action readiness is described as being ready to engage in action, whereas phenomenological tone characterizes each emotion as having a distinct feel in consciousness (Oatley, 21). A fully developed emotion can be characterized as a state of mind triggered by a particular situational outcome. The emotion prepares the individual for a particular reaction and instills a sense of awareness of the phenomenological tone.
The sixth emotion is kindliness, which is specified as “doing service to another in a time of need and not getting anything back in return. ”(1385b) It shows a great morale of doing good deeds in oneself. The seventh emotion is pity, which is described as a “pain in which a destructive event has happened to one that doesn’t deserve it. ”(1386a)
