South Rejection Destroyed the Reconstruction. After the civil war there were efforts sent out to reconstruct the south, and they went horribly wrong. During the civil war the south was totally destroyed. So the government decided to send help to rebuild the south’s economy and tradition. Both southerners and northerners had to rebuild the south, but a lot of southerners rejected the help and just wanted it to be back to normal with slaves and cash crops. The question to this DBQ is: “North or South: Who destroyed the rebuilding of the south’s economy?”. The south resistence destroyed the the reconstruction even though the north forgot about the reconstruction, the KKK was distracting the north from the reconstruction by harassing the government …show more content…
What the kkk was doing was main reason why the north got distracted from the reconstruction and how the south had the biggest part in killing the reconstruction. During the efforts of the reconstruction a lot of the south was trying to reject them and it was working. There were mainly two southern groups: the scalawags who supported the reconstruction and the Ku Klux Klan who really hated the idea of the reconstruction and equal rights. (Hook Exercise) The KKK was basically a terrorist group who when around killing congressmen who were for the reconstruction and equal rights. “He was foully murdered by the Ku Klux in the Grand Jury room of the court House.”(Doc A). The KKK also had first class men in their group People like Lawyers, Doctors, and government officials. “ Some are first class men in our town” (Doc B). The North was distracted from the reconstruction by corrupt Officials in grants Administration. Those members of the KKK that were lawyers and stuff were the corruption in grants administration. The south had a lot to do with killing the reconstruction. All but three of the southern states refused help from the reconstruction (Background 505). So the south really did not like the reconstruction and hated the idea of having african americans as equals. They counterclaim to this argument is that the northerners neglect killed the reconstruction, because they were focusing on the fraud in the government
The south being the main reason why reconstruction was a failure with acts like the KKK, Black Codes, and the thought that blacks couldn’t be elected officials were the main reasons why reconstruction failed the way that it did. The KKK commonly known as the Ku Klux Klan was one of the biggest reasons for the failure of reconstruction. Acts like the killing of “John Stephens, State Senator from Caswell”(Document A) The KKK created lots of violent terrorist like
Maceo Cardinale Kwik Reconstruction Reconstruction was the twelve years after the civil war. Those twelve years were full of readjustment fixing the ruin the United States had fallen into. The problems that had the United states in disarray were how to, rebuild the South, reunite the states, and ensure the rights and protection of the newly freed African Americans. The civil war left the South in shambles, and newly freed slaves struggled to adjust to their new freedom. Most Southerners hated reconstruction and everything else about the North.
Who killed Reconstruction: The North or South? Following the civil war, the south killed the reconstruction of the United States. (Reconstruction was putting the country back together after the Civil War) There are many reasons why, the south slowed down the reconstruction of the United States, the main reason was freedmen were not seen as equals to the white.
The goal of the reconstruction politically was to integrate Southern states/rebel states back into the U.S., and socially was to integrate the freed slave population to the society. However, ex-confederates of the South resisted this because of the fear of complete turnover of their lives, and to maintain the social hierarchy, where African Americans remained at the bottom by default due to their race. Several organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan were formed to resist reconstruction and preserve white supremacy. Congress responded to the resistance by establishing the Freedmen 's Bureau, whose aimed was to build public schools and universities, provide food and medical care, political equality between blacks and whites and equal access to the judicial system. Lincoln planned to be lenient
Peter Schroeder Dr. Christopher Marshall Modern United States History 2/2/17 Writing Assignment 1: The African-American Experience with Reconstruction Reconstruction among the south refers to the point in time which the United States was attempting to establish a relationship between the union and the rebels. The Union had won the civil war, so the next step was to begin to mend the broken relationship between the north and the south. Though historians cannot agree on when it began, there is merit in saying that it started before the end of the Civil War. After victory, had been solidified for the Union, attention of President Lincoln turned towards reconstruction.
After the Civil War, a period that spanded from 1863 to 1877, known as the Reconstruction period began. This time in history focused on transforming the South and changing African American lives. Although progress was made during this time, set backs from white supremacy groups like the KluKlux Klan also known as the KKK, people with pre-civil war or racist mindsets, and goverment coruption, the full effect of the Reconstruction would not be truely experienced or seen for about the next century. Northern civil rights activist and radical Republicans worked to secure rights for free blacks. Many towns, countys, and states made Black Codes black codes restricted the rights of free Africa Americans.
Although many attempts were made to prioritize freedom and equality for all, these values were undermined by racist Southerners who wouldn’t accept equality. In the end, Reconstruction had failed and former slaves endured another hardship akin to slavery. However, Reconstruction still could have prospered. There are multiple events that, if they had occurred, Reconstruction would not have failed. For example, had the government continued to fund the Freedmen’s Bureau, then the South would have legislated their discriminatory laws much later, if not at all.
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
The North was sick of being told that they were not protecting blacks in the South and neglected them. The South killed Reconstruction because of their resistance over the North’s help, and their corrupt ideas for reconstructing the
Disputes were caused by disagreements between the North’s and the South’s way of life. The Reconstruction’s purpose was supposed to be a time period of forgiveness for the Union. Consequently, it led to many disagreements between the North and South. Overall, reconstruction was a time period of challenges, which led to failures, rather than a period of
When thinking about the civil war, one of the first things that comes to mind is how did everything end up afterwards. Did things go back to normal? How long did it take to rebuild? Was the reconstruction of the south success or failure? 2 years before the Confederacy formally surrendered the Union began reconstruction.
The Reconstruction period lasted from 1865 to 1877. The thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth amendment were created during the twelve years of rebuilding the country. All of the amendments were made to protect former slaves and their rights but on paper they did not have any rights. The reconstruction period had its successes and failures.
America had many different difficulties after the war including meeting basic needs for foods, services, industry, freedmen a new place in a changed society, and establishing a new state governments. When meeting the basic needs for food, services, and industries the north and south had different ideas. The Northern ideas were mostly coming from the Freedmen’s Bureau in 1865 which helped the black slaves and poor whites in the south. Basically aid for refugees. Some southerners and freedmen did not like this new law and criticized it, but it supplies food and clothing to the freed slaves and poor whites, it even tries to locate jobs for them and prevent employers from exploiting them.
Racism’s Impact on Reconstruction While the issue of slavery evidently contributed to the divide that resulted in the American Civil War, it is debated whether prevailing ideals of racism caused the failure of the era following the war known as Reconstruction. With the abolishment of slavery, many of the southern states had to reassemble the social, economic, and political systems instilled in their societies. The Reconstruction Era was originally led by a radical republican government that pushed to raise taxes, establish coalition governments, and deprive former confederates of superiority they might have once held. However, during this time common views were obtained that the South could recover independently and that African Americans
Known for being an abolitionist and one of the most important African American leaders of the nineteenth century, Frederick Douglass once said, “The thing that worse than rebellion is the thing that causes rebellion.” Instances of rebellion orchestrated by groups of people can be traced from our earliest records of history all the way to today’s modern era. People in a society gather together and form a rebellion against whom they believe to be the oppressor. Using both violent and nonviolent tactics, these social groups continue to rebel until they achieve their goal of gaining some prosperity or desired success. The Ku Klux Klan and the anti-war protests of 1960s are two examples of social groups, that rebelled against their oppressor.
