One major similarity between the movie and poem is the fact that Grendel’s mother isn’t given a name. She had a bigger role in the movie and was seen as more powerful and hard to defeat. In the poem she was seen as weak and uncomparable to man, "No female, no matter/ How fierce, could have come with a man's strength,/ Fought with the power and courage men fight with..." (400-403). The movie showed her as a strong women that was hard to beat. For example in the scene where Beowulf goes to Grendel’s mother’s home, she is portrayed as a strong beautiful women that is feared by man. She was unable to be beaten because of her powers. Beowulf falls for her beauty and makes a deal of peace and wealth in exchange for the highly sought after drinking glass. This shows how Grendel’s mother is viewed completely different in the movie over how she was viewed in the poem. Through examining both Beowulf, the movie, and Beowulf, the poem, the similarities and differences reveal what was important to the societies that created them.We are shown how Beowulf is changed from an honorable hero to a man distracted by women, how Grendel is given a backstory to make the viewers have empathy towards him, and how the roles of women have changed over time from being weak to now unbeatable. Societies are ever changing and we need to learn that even though things may change it is important to hold strong to our traditions
Beowulf and John Gardner’s Grendel are two stories separated by hundreds of years. Though they both tell the same essential story - the epic hero Beowulf’s battle with the devious monster Grendel and other foes - they seem as different as can be. Beowulf is an epic poem, a story as old as stories themselves are. Grendel is a work of prose, told from a villain perspective, and revels in philosophizing and moral ambiguity. Yet, while Beowulf and Grendel may differ in execution, they both ultimately argue the same point: stories are what give our lives meaning.
In Gardener’s Grendel, the monster is characterized as a sensitive human. He feels that no one accepts him. Grendel feels like he has no one and he doesn’t want to accept his designated role as “The Great Destroyer”. Grendel desires to be accepted by man is overlooked by his terrifying looks. “Mercy!
The first example of the similarities and differences in the poem and the movie is regarding characterizations of monsters. In the movie and the poem in found some similarities regarding this topic. “A powerful monster, living down/ In the darkness, growled in pain” (lines 1-2).
“How well he had worked, and in that gray morning broke their long feast with tears and laments for the dead. ”(42-44) The mood is the same because both stories show the merciless violence of Grendel. Grendal and Beowulf have different feelings in each of their stories in Grendal it is joyful and beowulf it’s anxious. As Grendel attacks he feels an emotion he didn't expect. “I felt an unearthly
“Beowulf” is a piece of literature that is considered to be a poem. The poem consists of how Beowulf has to kill Grendel’s mother. Beowulf has to go to the floor of the lake and into Grendel’s mothers lair to try to defeat her. Eventually, Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother.
The fight with Grendel’s mother is much more violent than the fight with Grendel, for she is stronger than the previous enemy, so Beowulf changes his battle tactics to compensate for her
In the epic poem, Beowulf, there are clear distinctions between an epic hero and a monster. Beowulf is the prime example of a epic hero possessing characteristics such as superior strength, courage, and loyalty. On the other hand, Grendel and Grendel’s mother are characteristized as evil and immoral based off of their actions. These characteristics are presented throughout the poem, and monsters are given grotesque, hideous appearances to further prove that they are evil. After Beowulf kills Grendel, Grendel’s mother reaction revealed how the full presentation of a character can allow readers to react differently than before and even sympathized with them.
In the epic poem Beowulf, the protagonist, Beowulf, faces three “monsters” at different times in his life. The poem begins with Grendel, a monster who attacks only in the dark of night, tormenting the kingdom of Hrothgar. The last two sections of the epic detail the conquering by Beowulf of Grendel’s mother and the dragon. The battle between the monsters and Beowulf represent the theme of good versus evil in the poem, as well as the fusion of pagan and Christian ideals in the changing Germanic society. Grendel’s mother’s actions directly juxtapose the role of a woman in this time period, and the greediness of the dragon with his treasure contrasts with the virtues of what would be considered a good king.
Grendel in both stories is described as a vicious "Monster", but is viewed differently. The character of Grendel, in the novel by John Gardner, portrays a different visualization than that of Grendel in the epic poem Beowulf. In the novel the story is told in first person point of view which gives Grendel human qualities while Grendel in Beowulf is told in third person point of view not giving Grendel his standpoint. In both works, the authors give two different perspectives of Grendel. Grendel in the novel is not seen as a "Monster", but as a human that has emotions and is very sympathetic about everything that comes his way.
The poem and movie of “Beowulf” are very different and they are also sort of similar. There are a lot more differences between the two than you would expect and while some of them are minor differences others are drastically different. Most movies are very different from the book they are made from. The biggest differences between the movie and poem were the three battles. The three battles have drastic differences.
Thus allowing the reader to interpret the tone better because of how Grendel expresses his feeling. On the other hand, Beowulf gives the reader a generalization of how he sees society. Plain and simple. Beowulf only sees the world as good and evil, black and white, there is no gray area, causing the tone to be bland and boring due to no detail or unexpected turns. Beowulf overlooks society as a horrible place that only " the vicious raids and ravages of Grendel, his long and unrelenting feud, nothing but war...young and old were hunted down by the death shadow" (line 151-160).
The movie Grendel starts off attacking Herot Hall, but in the textbook he started attack villagers. In the textbook, Grendel mother was considering hideous; however, in the movie she was a gorgeous monster. Accordingly, to the textbook version Beowulf’ death was extremely not dramatic. The movie and poem Beowulf share many differences, for the attack of Herot Hall, death of Grendel and his mother, also tragedy death of
The speeches and boasts were the same, with Beowulf telling how great he is and King Hrothgar telling how hard, yet important, it is to be a warrior. Another similarity is the fight between Grendel and Beowulf. In the movie, Beowulf tore Grendel’s arm off, and fought him by hand, not by sword or shield—same goes for the book. In conclusion, both the poem had their similarities and differences.
The film and epic poem Beowulf may seem alike because of their similar plots and characters, but when looked at deeper, it is clear that their cultural differences set them apart. Traditionally, epic poems are lengthy stories that praise the deeds of heroic warriors whilst reflecting the brutal reality of life. They expressed cultural pride and teachings, while telling everyone that we are hopeless in the hands of fate; that all human ambition ends in death. In our modern world today, movies are made to entertain, but more importantly to sell and make a profit.
