or my History project I chose Option A. I believe that one of the biggest contributors to the start of the Civil war was economic issues. The economic start of the Civil War goes all the way back to the start of English settlement in North America. A new economy began in this era and it supported the use of slavery for labor to supply crops and cotton. Plantation owners in the South used slave labor for their own benefit to produce crops at a faster rate which made them more money. The North thought slavery was immoral and wanted Africans to be free citizens like any other person would want to be treated. The south had different opinions from the North because the South made money from slavery and cotton plantations thrived off Africans working for the owners. This was the biggest contributor to the start of the Civil War in my opinion, the economic issues were formed because the North did not want to allow slavery at all. …show more content…
Southern plantations farms mainly made tobacco crops in Virginia, these farms used Africans as the main source of labor in the 1600s. The North thought that using slaves for the plantation owners benefits was not right and they believed Africans had a right to be free citizens. This difference in opinion caused a big issue between the North and the South, this mainly effected the South because Southern farmers relied on cotton plantations and slavery to make money. Cotton began to pick up in popularity in the US because it was so common, but it was not that easy to collect. The South used slavery to make clothes out of cotton before the civil war and relied on slaves for trading. The United Kingdom got involved with the south for cotton trade and made the value of cotton very high, but increased slavery because the United Kingdom wanted more cotton and that would mean more
The first main cause of the Civil War was conflict between the North and the South about economic differences. In documents A and B, they provided for us, explain various reasons as to why economic reasons were a big part of the Civil War. For example, Document A shows a map of Railroads and Slave Density that provides information of where railroads are located and which of the states have bigger
Slavery and the Cause of the Civil War The Civil War was caused by a variety of factors, including slavery. The South relied heavily on the institution of slavery, which provided cheap labor and allowed the large plantation owners to accumulate vast amounts of wealth. The North, however, did not rely on slavery, and many Northerners opposed it. The two regions had different economic systems, with the South relying on agriculture, while the North relied on industry.
The first main cause of the Civil War was economic differences between the Northern and Southern states. During the first few decades of the 19th century, the North had an industrial revolution that brought an economy that relied on laborers. While at the same time, the South continued to rely on slaves for their farming and the production of cotton. The Northerners did not need slaves for their economy, but the Southerners could not make any profit without cotton or slaves. In the 1860’s, the North had twice as many railroads as the South, and the South had a bigger cotton production because of their slave population (Document A).
Prior to the Civil War, the north and south viewed liberty and freedom differently. Slavery was one of the issues that they did not see eye to eye on but also territorial expansion and tariffs on imports from other countries brought great opposition as well. Most slaves worked as agricultural laborers, but they were also employed in factories and mines. The success of the southern states depended on enslaved labor, and that dependence made the structure on slavery in the south all the deeper and inescapable.
During the 17th century, slavery from Africa was very common in the United States. During 1776, Americans gained freedom from Britain, some African slaves fought alongside with White Americans to gain freedom from America while fighting for America’s freedom. Even though African slaves fought in the Revolutionary War, most African slaves were unable to get their own freedom. In the southern states there was a high demand for cotton and tobacco labor. Southern states like Alabama, Maryland, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia had large fertile land for cropping.
The South was able to produce 7/8 of the worlds cotton supply. The South became more dependent on the planted field system and it’s full of force part, slavery. Notably, at that moment, the North was flourishing industrially. The North depended on factories and others
Southerners blamed the north for causing the violence. This fueled tensions and precipitated the Civil War because southerners thought northern abolitionism inspired slaves to act out and rebel. Essentially, this made the north their enemy because they were threatening their lifestyle and
The War Between the States was one of America’s greatest wars—it was the fight for freedom, but it also impacted the economy. Because of this, America’s labor and transportation systems both took a significant turn during the Civil War, impacting America’s economy forever. In the end, the American Civil War greatly benefitted our transportation system, but devastated the South’s labor force. For a war to be fought strategically well, there first must be a form of simple, yet speedy, transportation. That is where the transcontinental railroad came in.
It is eerily personal, as we complete this course reading about the civil war and living through today’s adversarial climate of protesters, division of social, economic and political parties. As Abraham Lincoln said in the Gettysburg Address “and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this earth” (Lincoln 428). The Civil War, while largely believed to be largely about slavery it appears to me that state’s right played just as an important role in the actual cause and continuance of the war. The division of the states and their prosperity, industry, education and representation in Congress divided this country, much as it is today.
Speaking of the matter of interest, the Civil War articulated divergent views from a fight to abolish slavery. The ideology of interest and gain prominently fueled the conflict within the American poles. Therefore, it must stamp the intended outcomes of the war. Cotton used to be the most worthy product during the war years that the American south produced two thirds to the world’s cotton with the state of Missouri on top. The South decision to secede was backed up with their benefits from cotton trade.
Did you know that more men died the Civil War than any other American conflict, and one third of the dead perished from disease? The American Civil War was the war fought between the Union and Confederacy from 1861 to 1865 over the issue of slavery and state’s rights. The main issues leading up to the Civil War were Missouri’s statehood, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Election of 1860. One of the main causes of the Civil War was the issue of Missouri becoming a state.
Nick Baxter What caused the Civil War? DBQ The Civil War was caused by three main reasons are economic differences, interpretation of Constitution, and moral beliefs. The North and the South were very different economically.
Another major factor that led to the Civil war was the social status and views at the time. The North and South had very different social views. In the North, while a good amount of the people owned slaves, many of them began to see it as wrong and inhumane. They also began to believe that they no longer needed slaves to do work for them and that the slaves should have freedom, as well as their own rights. But even with the North beginning to want to change things, slaves were still not treated like human beings most of the time.
There were three main causes of the civil war including slavery, sectionalism and secession. Slavery was a huge part of it and it led to the Missouri Compromise where any states below the border would be slave states and the anything north of that was free states. (Mrs. Wise) "The south feared the declaration of freedom for the slaves by government leaders in the North." Next, sectionalism. Sectionalism-
To a greater extent, slavery was the greatest cause of the outbreak of the civil war in 1860. Disputes of slavery caused economic and political troubles between the northern and southern states leading up to the civil war. The fact the the northern and southern states were different in almost every way caused them to turn out like completely different territories, one of their greatest differences was the fact that most southern states economy relied on hard labour, agricultural jobs like tobacco in Maryland, and cotton in Virginia; this caused their economy to be more based on the labour of slaves than the more developed territories in the north (Harrold), who after this time was starting to not need the slave labour in their territories because after early 1800’s, the industrial revolution had been spreading to America, and the country developed very quickly. But in this expansion, only the north states were getting the effect of the industrial revolution, meaning the north would not need slave
