Julius Caesar Essay In the play Julius Caesar, written by William Shakespeare, we can analyze the effects that society had on one of the main characters named Brutus and also, the effects Brutus had on society. Society had a big impact on Brutus. Brutus was a very honorable and noble man. This led him into assuming naive views of the world. He was unable to see through the fake letters that are supposedly written by the people of Rome, but in reality are being written as a scam from Cassius. Brutus interpreted these letters as a protest against Caesar. He believed the people of Rome were telling him their desires through this letter, he tries to resolve this by listening to the societies challenge to “speak, strike, redress” (II.i.47). Reading these letters from “random citizens” it is what finally pushes him over the edge. The people of Rome along with the conspirators convinced him to kill his former friend, Caesar. His last words before killing Caesar were “not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” (III.II.19-24) This shows that he cared more about the society and people of Rome, than his friend. We see this when he steps up and takes control of the conspiracy. He begins telling others what to do, and what not to do. In the text Cassius says, “Let Anthony and Caesar fall together.” Brutus replies “Our course will seem too bloody, Caius Cassius to cut off the head and then hack at the limbs, like wrath in death and envy afterwards; for Anthony is but a limb of Caesar…” to this Trebonius replies “There is no fear in him; let him not die; For he will live, and laugh at this hereafter.” (Act 2, Scene 1) This once again shows Brutus’ convincing ways.
