Effects of Communism in Animal Farm It is commonly believed that communism will lead to equality and happiness for all; Orwell proves that this is not always the case. The hope for equality in Animal Farm is not accomplished because the pigs live a better life than the other animals. Also, The animals other than the pigs are forced to work harder then they had when Mr. Jones ran the farm. Finally, the animals other than Napoleon cannot share their own opinions. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, communism is proven to lead to unfairness and dictatorship through the better living conditions of the pigs, harder work for the animals, and the inability for animals to share their opinions. Several animals felt troubled in the decision of banishing Snowball from the farm but were unable to vocalize their concerns. “Four young porkers…uttered shrill squeals of disapproval…suddenly the dogs…let out deep menacing growls, and the pigs fell silent.”(Orwell 36-37) The pigs attempted to share their opinions but were silenced from speaking. Napoleon uses his dogs to cause fear so that the animals can not disagree with him. In the Russian Revolution the KBG scared the people into obeying Stalin and keeping any negative opinions to themselves. Also, the animals were unable to share their opinions when the pigs paraded around the farm on two feet. The animals thought of protesting against the pigs walking but, “…by the time the sheep had quitted down the chance to utter any protest had passed, for the pigs had marched back into the farm house.” (Orwell 89) The animals did not agree with the pigs walking on their hind legs but the bleating of the sheep was too loud to be heard over. The sheep had been instructed to shout loudly because Napoleon knew that the animals would disapprove of the pigs walking. In the Russian Revolution the protests of the people were not listened to just like on the farm. The animals were forced to agree with Napoleon for they were unable to share their own opinions. Throughout the novel there are many examples of the unaccomplished goal of equality through communism. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, communism is proven to lead to unfairness and dictatorship through the better living conditions of the pigs, harder work for the animals, and the inability for the animals to share their opinions.
