Eli Whitney was born on December 8th 1765 in Westboro, Mass. He was born on a farm and loved farming. Eli went to Yale to study to become a lawyer, but later became a tutor in South Carolina because it was well needed at the time. Nearly ten years later Eli created the cotton gin. Eli felt like this invention was needed due to the process of cotton was a long enduring process that needed to speed up due to the high demand of cotton. To invent the cotton gin Eli analysed what the slaves were doing to remove the seeds from the cotton fiber and make it more proficient. He went through many trials and conquered some problems, but later figured out the problems. The cotton gin was then created. The cotton gin was created in 1793 by Eli Whitney. …show more content…
There were more slaves in the South overtime due to the rise of the cotton that needed to be picked by the slaves. It was affecting the institution and use of slavery by getting more slaves to raise the production rate of cotton. The end of the African slaves that worked in cotton field ended in 1865 due to the Civil War ending slavery. The civil war can be traced back to the cotton gin invention because by this time they should been using a cotton gin to get some of the work done. The cotton gin was a major impact to cotton because it eliminated such a crucial time of the cotton process by taking out the seeds of the cotton that would take the slaves a long time when the cotton gin would be done with it at a fast …show more content…
The cotton gin played a big role in the south as it eliminated the removal time of cotton seeds. The process took ten hours for each pound of cotton. The cotton gin made this process faster by removing the seeds at a much more rapid rate. The video said that the cotton gin impacted the north because it provided cotton to make the textiles in the factory. The cotton gin impacted the lives of the people of the United States by providing jobs to the American people both to the northern and southern parts. Also, the cotton gin gave textiles to the United States. The cotton gin affected the U.S. politically by dealing with England in not only a trading matter, but also in a manner of discussions for treaties. The cotton gin was not the greatest invention. The lightbulb was the greatest invention because it made it available to see and do things in a more proficient manner than only advancing the cotton
Soon cotton production went from, “2 million pounds in 1791 to a billion pounds by 1860. As early as 1840 the United States was producing half of the cotton grown around the world” (White 379). This surplus of cotton mentioned was produced by the cotton gin and sold worldwide making the South a major trade power and exceedingly wealthy. The cotton gin needed someone
The Invention of the cotton gin greatly affected the growth of the south in the 1800s. It did so in many ways including effecting the souths economy, and causing the south to have a much higher demand for slaves. Eli Whitney’s invention revolutionized the cotton industry and caused it to grow and prosper. Because of this the south became a huge producer in the cotton industry causing the economy to skyrocket. One reason why Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin boosted the souths economy was the fact that it made cotton production much faster.
Geography Geography Impacted sectional differences that led to the civil war. The northerners were against slavery and the southerners were proslavery. It depended upon what state that you have lived in if you were a free state or not. In the south there were More than 4 million slaves many who worked on plantations. Innovation/technology Technology Impacted sectional differences that led to the civil war .
I was born on the 8th of December in 1765. I Was born in Westboro, Massachusetts, and I am the inventor of the cotton gin. I created the cotton gin to take out the seeds from the cotton much faster. My father was a farmer, and I graduated from yale college. I was going to be a private tutor, but instead I accepted an invitation to stay with Catherine Greene.
Slavery had a tremendous impact on all aspects of Virginia. It helped keep Virginia afloat and at the same time slowly helped its downfall. It affected the economy, social, and class system. By having the slaves work the plantations, it let the owners keep the money which in a way made slavery the mainstay of the economy. When the cotton gin was created it became the core of the social and political aspects of
With Ely Whitney's invention of the cotton gin, cotton farming drove several changes. Cotton farmers could grow more cotton, considering processing cotton became more efficient with the cotton gin (Schultz, 2013). This change drove increases in land use, the establishment of additional farms, and a sharp increase in the use of enslaved people. These additional farms increased the wealth of southern farmers but caused several environmental problems considering the additional land clearing required to open fields and the soil damage caused by overuse. Social life for enslaved people dropped to inhumane levels, given that enslavers believed social interaction among enslaved people could lead to rebellion and insurrection due to several slave
The Cotton Gin invented by Eli Whitney was a machine that was able to quickly separate cotton fibers from the seeds, this made work faster and more productive. Although this invention affected the South in many helpful ways the biggest effect of the Cotton Gin was the civil war. The Cotton Gin was a big demand in the South because cotton and agriculture were what the economy relied on. The invention needed people to work the cotton gin therefore, the South needed an abundance of slaves. The population of enslaved people was far larger in the South than in the North as seen in this map showing the distribution of the population of enslaved people in the United States, in 1861 shown on the map below (Map of Enslaved 1861).
The impact of slavery on the Old South is a difficult measure to establish because slavery was the Old South. While the popular adage was “Cotton is King,” it was simply a microcosm of the delusion of the day. Truly, slavery was king. Slavery was the growing tension of the time, political catalyst and ironically crux of American power. To the masses, slavery was a social defining stance; the “peculiar institution” to some and a defining moral line to others, American life was changed depending on what view you took of slavery.
In this time period slavery was the biggest aspect in American (South) in its era. Due to the Spanish taking lands from the Native Americans to colonist and to build on the new land. Then enslaving
The South was able to produce 7/8 of the worlds cotton supply. The South became more dependent on the planted field system and it’s full of force part, slavery. Notably, at that moment, the North was flourishing industrially. The North depended on factories and others
The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. Versions of a cotton gin have existed since the first century in which single rollers were used to try to separate the seed from the cotton. Over time, a double roller system was invented. Finally, in 1793, the version invented by Whitney actually used teeth-like projections to remove the seed from the cotton. A belt and pulley system then separated the lint from the seeds.
It enabled productivity to increase significantly, more specifically the cotton gin would generate up to fifty pounds of cleaned cotton daily from one pound daily. An important contribution to produce the cotton gin consisted of the closely time-related period of the removal of the native peoples of the southern lands (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Northern Louisiana.) When this act occurred, the land that was previously occupied by the Native Indians presented availability for white men with money and dreams such as developing or producing more cotton gins. Other acts and features (negatives and positives) of the cotton gin are; it revolutionized cotton production, was profitable for the non-wealthy to become wealthy, it fostered associated expansion of racial slavery throughout the region, shaped the nation’s economy, social and political development, lower status people were forced into slaving these companies or moving to cities to be employed in other, typically dangerous jobs
In 1793, Eli Whitney’s cotton gin removed seeds from cotton fibers. Because of the cotton gin, Southerners increased highly profitable cotton production, depended heavily on slavery, and joined an expanding clothing market with New England and Britain. Eli Whitney demonstrated interchangeable musket parts to Congress in 1801. Nearly identical musket parts could easily be produced and replaced. During the Civil War, soldiers could simply and inexpensively repair damaged Springfield rifles.
Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin resulted in cotton becoming America's leading crop. Within 60 years America's production of cotton quadrupled making cotton the primary export in the United States. The growth of the cotton production due to the invention of the cotton gin resulted in the need for more textile mills in the Northern United States.
Lastly, with the expansion of the country to the west and into what we now know as Texas drove the need for more slaves to work the land. With the decrease of demand for tobacco and rice, plantations turned to the new crop cotton. In 1800 less than half a million bales of cotton
