Emotions; A consensus that most humans grasp, but what happens when you live in a society where every single person is deprived of memories, emotions, and loved ones are at risk of death? We see this concept a lot in character Jonas in our story The Giver. We read along as Jonas learns about the difficulty of emotions, their lack of memories, and the unnerving actions of his community. We start to see his opinion about his community shift when he learns the true meaning of "releasing", and at the beginning of his training with the giver. Let's observe how and when Jonas's point of view changes on his community.
When Jonas gets his role as the receiver of his community, he slowly but surely starts to get more curious about the secrets that his community has been hiding. The very first time we see him form an opinion about his community is whenever he is receiving memories for the first time. He starts to feel emotions for the first time. During one of his training sessions with the giver, he receives a memory that stuck out to him throughout the entire novel. This memory was the snow incident. In this memory, we hear Jonas sledding down a hill then he gets hurt. This is the first time he has felt pain

To keep this explanation short release is basically injecting anyone that has broken the rules with a liquid that kills them. Instead of the Giver just telling Jonas he makes him watch his father perform a release. The giver makes him watch it so that he knows that his community shows no remorse to the people that they kill. Jonas’s father is so clueless that he says “All done, that wasn’t so hard was it?” take in mind that he says this after killing the newborn. Jonas is mortified at this and we can conclude this when he says.” He killed it, My father killed it.” This is right before Jonas comes to a conclusion to escape the
It was now that Jonas was informed of his duty as receiver of memories. Jonas was forced to leave his place of comfort and leave the safe world that he had been in up until this point.
He also commented that people had said that she asked for release, the memories were transmitted to the citizens, leaving them with pain and anger, also the giver was left with a little sadness and anger too. Jonas thought that he would never disappoint the giver, also he would never ask for release, but still he felt lonely
This quote shows that Jonas has a lot of questions about the reasons for traditions. For example, he asks the Giver why he keeps memories away from the community. If Jonas blindly follows the traditions that are hurting the community, then it will not get any better. However, in the examples, Jonas tries to learn the meaning of the traditions, which later helps him try to save the
In the end of chapter 22, it said, “He wept because he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel, he no longer cared about himself.” (Lowry 218). This piece of evidence shows that Jonas, had he not been trying his hardest to keep Gabriel alive, would have been fine with dying due to the fact he didn’t care about his life or what happened to him. The only thing keeping him alive was his reliance on the fact that Gabe needed him which proves that he relies on Gabe just to keep surviving. In addition there were multiple other quotes proving this such as , “The Giver hugged him.
In the Giver’s quarters, Jonas watches a replay of his father unknowingly murdering an innocent newborn. Jonas witnessed as “...the newchild, no longer crying, moved his arms and legs in a jerking motion. Then he went limp. His head fell to the side, his eyes half open. Then he went still…
He finds out things he never knew before. For example, Jonas witnesses his father kill a baby. “He killed it! My father killed it!” (Pg. 150).
This knowledge of pain changed Jonas's likes because when he was told that his training would include pain, he was not so sure that he wanted to receive memories. Now that he knows what pain is, he still wants to receive the memories that The Giver has to offer. Right after Jonas was given a memory of love, he said, "I liked the feeling of love. I wish we still had that."(158). Ths memory in particular is one that Jonas cherishes.
He feels betrayed by his father and his community for lying to him. In this quote, he realizes that if his community lied to him about something super important like a release, they might be lying about other things too. I completely understand why Jonas feels hatred and resentment towards his father and his community because he just saw his father kill a newborn baby and lie to his face about how release works. I would feel the same way if someone did that to
Then he was still.” Jonas realizes in a couple of seconds that the child has been killed, they do this to new children who don't pass the test, lowest weight twins, and the old. Killing other humans is their solution for overpopulation and Jonas was right to run away from that. Others may also say “but they don't have to worry about food” and while that is also true, Jonas still should have left. While they don't have to worry about the food they gave up the entirety of the weather for it.
He is under sameness and the influence of the community. Jonas is chosen to receive feelings, colors, and emotions from memories. As time goes by Jonas sees the community not as a utopia but a horrible place. Jonas wants to change
In the book, everyone has the same attribute’s but one twelve year old boy named Jonas. Throughout the novel,Jonas has suffer and has been misunderstood. Jonas opened his eyes to the reality of the community. This causes tears, anger, lonely’s,confused, unaware and misunderstanding. “He killed it my father killed it”,Jonas said to himself” (Lowry 188).
The story begins and ends “ in medias res”. “ Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo. “, “ It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened. No.
Feelings and Emotion Different feelings and emotion are not known in the community within the people. The Giver and Jonas are the only true people that know how to feel the different emotions. Every night at the conclusion of their evening meal one of the rituals is the evening telling of feelings. In the very first Chapter Jonas talks about how it was almost December and Jonas was beginning to be frightened. But then thought that was the wrong word to use.
(153). Jonas has a rule saying he can lie to anyone but he never realized that others could be lying to him as well. Turns out, others do lie, it is part of their job. After finding out his father was lying about the release, Jonas morally views him as a murderer, someone who killed without mercy, “His father smiled and lied easily, too, about his busy and pleasant day the day
This supports the answer because Jonas feels alone, and that no one knows what he does. If the community had empathy they could know how he is feeling and try to help him. Another example is on page 112, it
