When I first got my feedback from an essay I felt blank and disappointed. Everything I thought I knew was like a drop in the ocean compared to the things I had not known. I had yet to realize that learning has no boundaries or an end. A great way to know how much you’ve grown is to look back at the work that has been already done and compare it to the current work. For me, ENGL101 served a great purpose in my academic writing skills as well as improving my confidence. I was never confident in my academic writing, in fact I only knew so little. I didn’t know where I stood or how I could progress but now I do. I certainly feel a significant improvement in my growth as a writer because of this course, even in such a brief period of time. I have been able to graze the surface of a few of the course goals, but I am aware that there is still a massive amount of room to grow and learn. One of the biggest issues I had …show more content…
I tend to use good assortment of vocabulary but sometimes instead of using sophisticated words I choose to use fancy words which are not always meshing well with a certain sentence. To write about a personal topic rather than sticking to some certain criteria is what I prefer as a writer because personal topics leave a room for more thinking and analyzing. Personal topics tend to form a connection with the reader and the writer which I truly think is fantastic. As a writer, I do not like to stick to a certain layout or structure because it doesn’t let me express myself to the full potential. What I also learnt about myself as a writer is that I tend to write my best essays when I draft them prior to writing a final piece. It gives me a clear idea and a sense of a good thought out work.be it a mind map, bullet points or freewriting, they are very effective guides for ne personally and they transform my work into something
When registering for this class, a wave of worry ran through me, because I had minimal skill when it came to writing, particularly in the field of formal writing. The high school I attended was academically poor, we never wrote formal papers, just informal book and movie responses. Therefore I was apprehensive about this class. This course was quite intricate, but I attend skills that will aid me for the rest of my academic career. Rhetorical knowledge, critical inquiry, process, and conventions are all concepts I have acquired.
The learning experience from this unit, which I would share with colleagues, friends and family members would have two elements. The study material for Unit 2 was thought provoking, regarding the critical components of effectively engaging Bethel University’s writing based online degree program and knowing myself. It is imperative that I embrace the tips for successful writing during my academic journey. The self- assessment provided in the Unit 2 Read assignment is very useful as I clarify my weaknesses and develop strategies to strengthen them. The Unit 2 Podcast discusses the importance of knowing yourself by understanding your personality type and learning style.
Whenever I think about what I have learned since the beginning of this course—English 101, It always gives me a great pleasure to tell myself and people around me that I have learned something great; something that can make me a better writer. Writing is very complex and can be hard for some people. I know that it is very important to be original in your papers. Whether it is in your writing voice or in your literacy. Even though I have yet to fully grasp my writing voice. I have noticed it comes mainly from past experiences.
I am now able to see the areas in which I lack in but I also recognize my strengths as well. To become a precise writer, you have to take the initiatives that will help you do so. These initiatives consist of working on different academic genres, planning and organizing material, identifying purpose and audience and for revising intentionally. It is also includes reading different types of texts and learning how to understand a writer’s argument and respond to the ideas of others.
I felt like all the practices and processes were very beneficial to improve my writing skills. I will take all skills to English 5, but specifically Swales movement and Huckin’s methodology. These two made the most sense and really helped improve my writing. Sentence variety, for example, NPA will definitely be of use and I plan to use all sentence improvements for next semester.
In this class I’ve transformed my writing from novice to expert and I am very proud to say that. Most importantly above all you will learn about yourself in ways that you never thought. That’s through the writings and projects we’ve done on others identity. The writings that shape our own identity were through blogs we’d have

My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor.
