Many people have advocated for changes in our policies towards nature as they understand that our surrounding environment is constantly under human abuse. Yet many also deny that our actions have any substantial negative effect, such as those who deny the existence of global warming. However, I believe that our actions have severe impacts on the environment around us and I intend to research studies revealing the various consequences of human activity. In Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Dillard’s friend Zacharias experiences a flood that submerges a “whole town...under water [causing] all the electrical power” (Dillard 158) to go out. Although some skeptics around the world believe that climate change is a hoax and unscientific, many respected scientists have concluded that environmental changes brought around by humans have altered the patterns of rainfall around the world, resulting in serious consequences.

Climate change itself is a manmade alteration to the earth’s natural homeostasis. By instigating climate change, humans have made it so a wide variety of problems have become apparent. One of many complications is the change in precipitation patterns, which can lead to flooding via extreme storms and can even cause extreme droughts. This problem is a serious one as every year, billions of

Through my investigations regarding this matter, I have cemented my belief that humans need to change their ways even if it costs them short-term benefits. In order to do so, humanity needs to reach a consensus and move to reform and create numerous ecological policies. Without such an agreement, many citizens each year will continue to suffer from the consequences of extremely heavy rainfall and the flooding that results from
The author fails to make compelling arguments on the environment since he does not use sufficient academic references for his information; and misunderstands the generalization issue. McKitrick
In “Nightwatch”, a chapter of the novel Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Annie Dillard guides the reader through an experience with migrating eels, creates vibrant mental images, and involves the readers with her own thoughts. This is all accomplished through the use of rhetorical strategies, namely diction, figurative language, syntax, and imagery; these elements culminate in Dillard’s intense, guiding tone that involves the readers with the eel experience. Diction is vital to creating Dillard’s fervent and guiding tone throughout “Nightwatch.” The use of gruesome and detailed words like “milling… mingling” and “seething… squirming, jostling,” causes the reader to erupt in silent shivers.
Sarah K. Castle, in her scientific fiction “The Mutant Stag at Horn Creek” develops the story to tell the nature-culture hybrids and its effect on human-kind and other creatures. The story sets in one location called “Horn Creek” and the main character “Sue” a park ranger and a narrator of the story. The author shows the effect of human meddling with natures at the very beginning of the story. A “Grand Canyon” which is the story plays had been mined and it starts to be closed for visitors and Horn Creek was one of them. In this fiction author is more about to say that human kind intervention in nature is the reason for the natural world disaster.
This would lead to conflicts for resources and possible shortages that would harm the population. Finally, the increase in heat waves and droughts would have a huge impact on agriculture and water availability as it will be difficult to produce crop and clean water to meet the demand of the population. This would also lead to shortages of food and water, affecting many
Farmers will reduce the daily amount of water they use on crops and cut it by 35%. Another way to save water is to stop
Mike Davis’s arguments are compelling because they do have truth to them, humans only suppress problems they do not solve them. The underestimation of nature by humans is what makes them surprised when tragedies like earthquakes, fires, and animal attacks weird. The illusions of control and safety we give ourselves hurt us; solutions suppress problems for example with gated neighborhoods. I agreed with his argument because of our encroachment on territory and over development of land. Humans are going to have accepted that we are hurting the environment and we cannot control what happens.
Humans have impacted the global environment significantly. Human populations have rapidly increased for the past few centuries. Imagine a world where sustenance is rare but people are plenty. Imagine the world where everyone's shoulders are touching one another and there is no room to move. “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift is an extremely sarcastic solution to a problem plaguing Ireland in the 1720s overpopulation.
Our environment had been endangered of becoming unsafe, threatening, and even deadly. “The water we drink, the food we eat, the very air that we breathe, are threatened with pollution. Our parks are overcrowded, our seashores overburdened. Green fields and dense forests are disappearing.” Johnson stresses that the health of people and environment is at risk because Americans have allowed for the destruction of nature to get out of hand, and causing both the Earth and human health at risk of becoming an ugly America, due to –as Johnson references- the “Ugly American” (“Great Society”).
Jane Goodall, a primatologist, ethologist, and anthropologist, explains that the greatest risk to our future is lacking enthusiasm and concern about its outcome. Considering Goodall is extremely environmentally keen, it is more than likely she is emphasizing this towards the future of the entire ecosystem, including plants and animals, rather than only the future of the human race. She explains that if the human race falls to a deficiency of caring about our environment, it can and will lead to a vast threat to the future of the world’s ecosystem. Often humans forget about the importance of the ecosystem and instead we become caught up in ourselves and our own individual needs. Goodall is stressing that if these egotistical human acts continue to occur, the future of our ecosystem is in jeopardy.
Flash floods may cause loss of lives and properties. Soil erosion will leads to loss of minerals for the land. The land cannot be used for
B. Thesis: The causes of global warming and climate change are because of increased emissions of greenhouse gases, and the effects of this are rising temperatures and more severe natural disasters. II. Body A. Counter Claim: Most scientist and people believe that humans are the cause of global warming because of the emissions that they put into the air, but there is a small percentage of people who think that global warming is not caused by emissions at all. Climate Change is one of the most unsettling problems mankind faces today. It leaves an impact on every single living thing, on every continent, no matter the privilege. Long term investment must be used to change the world. People must do more than just change out their light bulbs for eco-friendly ones, or drive fuel efficient cars. A choice as simple as changing our diets could reduce a human’s carbon footprint by fifty percent.
Whether anthropogenic intervention is good or bad, it is about understanding or natural environment and what is best for it. In order to understand what is best for it, we need to establish a connection with our natural environment. As Callicot states, “we can, quite apart from the vagaries of personal preference, pronounce some changes imposed on nature to be objectively good and others objectively bad”. While this is true, the extent to which we have utilised science and technology, most anthropogenic change to nature is unacceptable. It is undeniable that most of what humans impose on nature is destructive.
Water can no longer continue to stay unprotected, it is simply too important. Today most countries have laws aimed at safeguarding water quality and controlling water abstractions (Groenfeldt, 2013). In 2010, a new human right to ‘safe water and sanitation’ was recognized by the United Nations and implemented effective immediately. Water not only feeds the human body, but also the earth. Without water, nothing can grow.
One of the greatest issues that we face towards the environment has been an increasingly difficult problem over the last few years. Earths climate is changing at rapid paces and solutions are needed as quickly as possible to replenish natural ecosystems and cultures that depend on the environment. Climate change not only affects the animals in our ecosystem, but us humans as well. With the human population increasing every year, climate change is only getting worse. Many argue that the effects of climate change towards the environment are due to other extraneous factors, however, I myself am a strong believer that the problems such as rising sea levels, warmer temperatures and natural disasters are all due to both natural causes and human activity.
