Community service does not only have a profound impact on our community, but the impact it has on the individual people is even greater. The concept of community service has always been something that I grew up with, and now that I am older I better understand how important community service is for society. I have participated in community service activities. Starting in elementary school, I helped feed the homeless and rescue animals. Even with my wide range of volunteer experience, it was difficult to find an activity that would be meaningful and fulfill my thirty-hour obligation for my senior project. Despite the many community service opportunities available, it was hard to find one that really resonated with me. Originally, I wanted to volunteer with the Inderkum Jr. Tiger (IJT) football program. The IJT program is something that I near and dear to my heart. I played …show more content…
Christmas plays a huge role in every kid’s childhood, but not every kid is fortunate enough to have one. No matter what situation my family has been in I was always fortunate to wake up Christmas morning to gift under the tree, but now I understand that Christmas is not about what you get, but about what you are able to give back. To play a part in something as beautiful as in helping a kid have a better childhood really touched my heart and helped me see past the material things in life. Often people take for granted that they have gifts under the tree, or the luxury of having an iPhone, or nice clothes, but never stop to realize that there are people in the same community that don’t even have the luxury of waking up to a hot meal or clean clothes to wear. I can see, that a small personal gift under the tree can bring joy to a kid’s life, but it is also much more. And community services is much more, it is about taking small steps to bridge the gaps in society and create a caring community that takes care of one
Even though community service does not sound appealing to every person, it has created new experiences for me. Visiting schools have been enjoyable because I get to be around younger kids and it brings me back memories of
A study by Neimi concluded that community service involvement could lead to an increase in political knowledge, enhance participatory skills, and can alter some attitudes of participants (Neimi). Another study found that students who participated in community service showed improvement in problem solving, decision-making, self-efficiency, and competency
The theology for ministry discussed above is the base for what I do and learn in the real world doing community service. Being in community service is one of the most important responsibilities a human being can have. Community service means helping people, contributing to a specific community, making it better. This ultimately leads to improving people 's lives.
This semester in my English class I was assigned a service essay, which is where we students go out and pick some sort of community service and participate in the one chosen, of course after being approved by our instructor. We were informed of this essay from the start of the class, I ended up participation in two community services. The first one I did was I went down to the Young at Heart Senior Center here and town and just helped out around the center and visited with all the attendants. The second one I participated in was the Toys for Tots or Toys for Kids fundraiser. Out of these two I happened to find the Toys for Tots fundraiser more interesting and easier to write about.
The dictionary defines community service as volunteer work intended to help people. Through experience, I have learned that volunteering is much more than that. Seeing others smile because of your actions is rewarding; there’s a sense of pride and happiness that only helping others can evoke. Emigrating from Russia in 2002 wasn’t an easy task; however, Church in the Valley accepted us as one of their own. Strangers we hardly knew gave up their time to help us and it was this experience that sparked my interest in casting my
I found Phyllis Ryder’s “Rhetorics for Community Service” book most useful in helping me reflect on my service learning. I am currently volunteering in Miriam’s Kitchen, which is a non-profit organization aiming to end the chronic homelessness in DC. In order succeed, kitchen volunteers help prepare and serve meals to people in need. However simple this job may seem, there is a deeper meaning in what we do. We make our guests feel respected, safe, and treated as ordinary people.
Community service is not only about receiving hours to put on a resume, but it is something that can be done to guide others and make them feel better. An example of this is when I was part of the Martin Luther King day of service at Stockton University two years in a row. I sewed pillows and made pins to support the unfortunate; this was a great experience where I was able to make new friends and contribute to the society. Service is not only about being part of large organizations, but it is also about doing small deeds for others, like staying after school and contributing to a club even if it is not mandatory.
One of the many actions that keep our nation going, that is often overlooked, is community service. Often times community service is required in school and in jobs encouraging people to be excited to help out. Other times, people
In middle school and high school, almost every club I was in had to do with serving the community. It has always been something I enjoyed doing. I live in Johnstown, a city where many of the families are in poverty. One of my school 's biggest projects was Trojan Family Christmas, which was a charity event sponsored by Kiwanis Club through our Key Club that ensured children within my school district got at least one present. The members of Key Club, which included myself, put together different activities for the children, which included making Christmas ornaments and hot chocolate.
The Dalton School says “Inherent in the notion of Community Service are the feeling of optimism and empowerment: we are optimistic that the world can change, we as individuals can make a
Assignment #2 - What does service mean to me? This is a concept that I have been considering in great detail. I have always loved doing community service and giving back to the community. However, I never thought of what my life would be like without community service. The definition of service based on the Oxford dictionary: "The action of helping or doing work for someone.
Since kindergarten, I have been involved in BSA (Boy Scouts of America), which brings much community service with it. The one instance that stands out most in my time in scouts was my eagle project. I chose to benefact a local ministry out of Binghampton that services inner-city youths by refurbishing a basketball court in the backyard of one of the clubhouses. Because it was a herculean task, my inability to delegate tasks was confronted. Seeing the finished product was rewarding; however, the real satisfaction came from the faces of the children who got to use the new court for the first time.
Community service is the process of doing an act for someone else, and it is not for a reward. It is simply to help others. Emma Thurman’s idea of community service is, “It gives kids an education of how to care for others and the place they live.” According to Mrs. Havens, 7th grade counselor, “It helps boost your self-esteem because doing things for other people makes us feel better. You learn something.
I think FYE assign the task of community service to give back to the community and help us realizing that the world will become a better place if we all work together. When visiting my old school did not know that the community was not doing their part and clean up around the school. I have learned that giving back to the community is a good feeling
Community, love, service and forgiveness are all major aspects in the CJ community, the community in which we live in, and every community in which people live. All of these aspects are practiced throughout our everyday lives and are worked on to better shape our community in the future. Service is an act people use to better themselves and the others around them that need help. Throughout my sophomore year, both my contribution in my service to my community and my sodality time, have helped me shape into a better person and has made me feel more willing to help others out arounds me to better their lives. During my sophomore year, I completed a variety of different service opportunities that were presented to me.
