Hispanic and American Food Traditions
The type of food that we eat is influenced by the countries and people that were once settled down in the land that we live on. Those from the past generation help influenced the way that we live and the food that we eat. Each region has their very own dishes of food that represent their uniqueness and own touch of their country.
The Southwestern cuisine was created at the influence of Spanish, Mexican and Native American cultures. This influence took place, especially in New Mexico, but also in Arizona, Utah, Colorado and California. The cuisine that has formed has become iconic to the United States Southwest with having many similarities between Mexican food and a unique twist to it. The beginning of all this food style influence came from the legacy of the Aztecs, who were dining on beans, corn, chilies, avocados and onions. All these foods were present throughout the time, even before the Spaniards arrived in the New World. The Spanish had brought ingredients from their homeland such as cheese, lard and rice.

They might not be the exact recipes that the Spaniards, Native Americans and Mexicans used, but they have been remodeled and improved to be created and enhanced as the years go by. If you go to any Mexican restaurant it would be no surprise to find taquitos and tamales. But what is the difference between the two? Both are made with a variety of meats and have a corn casing, right? You would be correct, however, they might be more different then you think.

Unoriginal qualities and family are vital in numerous societies, yet they appear to assume a particularly essential part to Mexicans . A standout amongst the most imperative parts of their way of life is nutrition. Quite a bit of Mexican's every day schedules and conventions rotate around the custom of setting up the nutrition and eating it.
The culinary history of the Enchiladas dates back to ancient Civilization like the Aztecs and Mayans. Since Tortillas were created by the indigenious people of Mexico many dishes came abroad . Enchiladas were first noted in the Central Valley of Mexico where the indians "wrapped tortillas around small fish or other bits of meat" and "fry the tortilla" 1. Based off this The Enchilada was created and passed on from generation to generation including those immigrating into the United States during the early 1800 's (then being Mexico not the US) Until After the Mexican American war.
In the southwest sheep and goats became a permanent part of the economy and culture of Pueblo and Navajo peoples (Calloway). However, the traditional Navajo diet contained eating boiled mutton and corn, which the corn was prepared in a range of different ways. Also they would obtain flour by taken it through a slight leavening process, then make it into the type of cooked over the embers small cake that is found with Mexican tortillas (Unknown, What Did The Navajo Indians Eat). They could have learned this by the Mexicans because they were so close to Mexico but also because they learned other crafty things from the Mexicans. Also the Navajo diet goat’s meat was a well-known aspect however pork and bacon was a largely disliked in the community (Unknown, What Did The Navajo Indians Eat).
Although In more developed cities, the citizens forgo these traditional wear for a more western style. Not only are our clothing very expressive, so is our food and taste. ▸ The Food: Guatemalan food has to be one of my favorite foods ever. My mom’s cooking is the best. Many Traditional Guatemalan foods are based on Mayan Cuisine, which features ingredients like corn, chilies, and beans.
The colonials of New Spain brought animals such as horses, cattle, goats, sheep, chicken and pigs. Here Pilcher describes the importance of corn and wheat. I had no idea that Taco Bell was not real Mexican food until I went to an actual authentic Mexican restaurant. America puts its twist on these cultural things and remakes them. Obviously tacos are of hispanic origin but Taco Bell tacos are americanized as can be. They even include american cheddar cheese, which is not even used in hispanic Mexican food.
If Mexican culture were a quilt, then the many varied fabric patches that comprise its surface would be meals, the batting would be equal parts family and religion, and the thread used to sew the quilt together would be tradition. The people of Mexico consider mealtimes to be of utmost importance in their culture; however, much like an attractive quilt that lacks proper insulation—pretty, but useless—mealtimes lose much of their meaning without the substance that family and religion provide. The Aztecs were one of the most famous and successful early civilizations of the Americas that we know of, who ruled an empire in the modern day country of Mexico from 1350 to 1519. Mr. Chavez explains that even though immigrants have to leave much behind, they can become part of their new country and still keep some of their own culture. Many immigrants have to deal with the issues of other cultures disrespecting and calling them names and sometimes even getting harassed by others. Mexican immigrants are a big percentage of the United States’ population.
