Personality disorders include enduring patterns of inner experiences and behaviors which deviates from the norm in an individual’s culture. This pattern may be discerned in two or more areas, such as cognition, interpersonal functioning, affect, or impulse control. The pattern itself is enduring, inflexible and pervasive, and takes places across a broad range of social or personal situations. Eventually it leads to significant distress or impairment in academic, social, professional or personal areas of functioning. This is a disorder which refers to a tendency to interpret the actions of other individuals as deliberately demeaning or threatening. This disorder, with onset in early adulthood, is manifested by a general sense of distrust and unjustified suspicion of others, which in turn leads to the misinterpretation of their intentions as malicious or harmful. Individuals such as Lauren, who present a paranoid personality disorder, are not usually able to recognize their own negative feelings toward the rest of society. They will not believe that others are trustworthy, cannot develop trust in others, and will misinterpret harmless actions or comments, which may harbor unfounded resentment toward other people. An individual with paranoid personality disorder will have a long standing pattern of pervasive mistrust and suspicion of other people. The patient with a paranoid disorder will not reach out for treatment, as individuals with personality disorders generally do not seek out treatment until there is a significant interference or impact in the person’s life. Some of the causes of this disorder include biological or genetic factors, as well as social and psychological factors. Along with depression and dementia, the various illnesses defined as psychotic disorders are significant factors in relation to gun violence. It is terrifying to learn that people suffering from these disorders are allowed to carry guns and use them as they please. Psychotic disorders are a collection of severe mental illnesses, including identity disorder, agoraphobia, and most prominently, schizophrenia and bipolar syndrome. Wynne calls schizophrenia “a pervasive impairment in bioprocessing,” meaning that the illness diminishes certain brain functions of a person. He suggests that a patient of schizophrenia might believe that everyone is out to kill them.
In the case of the Aurora Colorado shooting, the perpetrator, James Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist that specialized in schizophrenia. He walked into the theater and opened fired. His classmates commented that he would laugh randomly and loudly at nonevents. He struggled to show basic emotions in his early childhood. He even wrote a disturbing story about an old women that hid a gun in her cane and killed wantonly.

Schizophrenic individuals often exhibit illogical and incoherent thought processes, and they often lack insight into their behavior and do not understand reality. A person with paranoid schizophrenia also experiences complex behavior delusions that involve wrongdoing or persecution. He was not delinquent as a child, it wasn’t until late adulthood did he began to show signs of deviant behavior.
Billy Bibbit shows the symptoms of this disorder very clearly. He also shows the fear that resides from the needs he has. Billy’s fear was very apparent and it was easily manipulated as shown by Nurse Ratched. When the needs brought on by the disorder are not met it brings out an excessive fear of failure. The disorder can be easily taken advantage of, people surrounding those who have this disorder should be careful with how they act towards them.
Mental illness significantly affects many around the world. In fact, about four-hundred and fifty million people worldwide suffer from one or more of the different known mental illnesses. That is one in every four people. Severe mental health issues such as severe anxiety disorder, antisocial personality disorder, schizophrenia, or sensory perception disorder are illnesses which are common among the people responsible for the numerous mass shootings in America. Many believe the possession of firearms in the hands of the mentally ill are the real cause of mass shootings.
People in real life and also in every story, play, musicals, etc, all have certain characteristics about themselves. In the tragic play Macbeth by William Shakespeare and in the story Holinshed’s Chronicle by Raphael Holinshed paranoia is a huge trait in these works of Literature. Paranoia is when someone or even multiple people are worried that other people or even everyone will find out their big secret that they do not want anyone to know about them. Macbeth, Banquo, and basically everyone in real life show the traits of paranoia at one time or another in their lives. In the play tragedy play of Macbeth, Macbeth shows that he has the trait of paranoia many times throughout the play.

The novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding starts with a group of boys whom their plane is shot down, as the story takes place in World War Two. The British boys are stranded on the island with no adults around.
What are some thoughts that come to mind when a person brings up the word schizophrenia? According to Ford-Martin, “Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder or group of disorders marked by disturbances in thinking, emotional responsiveness, and behavior” (2139). The character, Alice, from the film, Alice in Wonderland is a perfect example of schizophrenia, and the director, Tim Burton, further emphasizes the disorder by his use of film techniques. One characteristic of schizophrenia is delusions. According to Fallon, “The delusions of paranoid schizophrenics usually involve thoughts of being persecuted or harmed by others or exaggerated opinions of their own importance, but may also reflect feelings of jealousy or excessive religiosity” (2957).
