To many people in our modern world, when you think about the 1920s history in America, most would think about women’s rights or prohibition. Although these events two plus many of others to many historians, the whole idea of sports in America was an underground, booming area. The birth of mass culture would start rolling as the 1920s continued onward.¨During the 1920s, many Americans had extra money to spend, and they spent it on consumer goods such as ready-to-wear clothes and home appliances like electric refrigerators (“The Roaring Twenties”). The invention of the radio boomed throughout the middle class in the 1920s, which also brought the growth of broadcasting, that would connect the nation with the power of waves. Sales of radios soared from $60 million in 1922 to $426 million in 1929. The 1920’s was a grand time for the United States. Banks were failing, the Stock Market was crashing and the economy was falling apart, however sports were flourishing through these times. Football, track, tennis, boxing, and baseball were some of the most known sports in the 20s. During the 20s many sports had racially divided teams, for example baseball had a African American league called the Negro Leagues. Some sports were allowing integration of African American players with white players.

One of the greatest things about the Roaring Twenties was the sports. 1920s Sports were a very influential part of sports history and have paved the way for sports today. They have also changed the way the game is played today and some of the stars in this era are still the best to ever play the sport.
However, the period of 1900-1936 was a time of the progressive movement in the United States. Sports have a way of mirroring what is going on within society. To get an understanding of how the relationship works, there needs to be an understanding of what was occurring in society during this time. Change was brewing in the United States. One of the biggest changes involved women’s rights and the suffrage movement.
American society in the 1940’s was racially segregated. Public facilities including buses, theaters, and railroad stations excluded black patrons. Among many other parts of American life, baseball, like most professional sports, was equally discriminatory against African Americans. The major leagues only signed white players and denied any black man the opportunity to play professionally. They were restricted to their own Negro Leauges.

In the 1880’s blacks were not allowed to play on major league teams this is why they created their own league. They eventually got the rights to play in the majors when Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and became the first black American to play in the majors. Baseball was in their culture and this was something the White supremacy could not take from them.
Being so powerful and being watched by almost all the people around the globe, being as well strong in gathering the people together and affecting their emotions, politicians have decided to make use of this powerful tool in order to reach the people and convince them with their ideologies and to promote their regimes. As a result of that, sports has been effectively used a strong political tool. The white supremacy that flooded America in the 19th and early 20th century is no longer seen in the sporting world. This paper looked at sports through the lens of an individual athlete named Muhammad Ali (who definitively changed history for African-American people in the United States), as well as looked at sports as a whole throughout history. Through statistics and reports, proof has demonstrated that the sporting world has developed to give more of an opportunity for African-American athletes to compete than ever before. Athletics creates a platform that gives athletes an opportunity to be more than just an athlete. An opportunity to stand up for what they believe in and bring attention to some of the problems of the world.
When deciding to be active or play sports, does the thought of injury get in the way? Sports injuries occur because of contact, or from the bad technique in athletes. Some people believe changes should be made to make sports safer because sports can be very dangerous, while others believe that sports are fine how they are because all of the athletes in sports know the risks of playing.
