The United States is the world leader in private ownership of firearms with approximately 270 million weapons in private hands. Our country has about 4.4 percent of the world 's population, but an estimated 35 to 50 percent of the world 's civilian-owned guns, this is according to a 2007 report by the Switzerland based Small Arms Survey. The Constitution allows U.S. citizens to legally own many types of firearms. With the legal right to own firearms, also comes the legalities and restrictions on weapons, known as gun control. Gun control brings about many issues of citizen rights and legalities. There are many benefits and disadvantages of gun control. Some proponents of gun control would argue things such as; the constitution says only militias should be allowed arms, and that it doesn 't allow unlimited ownership. Also, they might say the constitution is dated and did not intend to allow “assault” rifles. Some other arguments may include things such as: reduced violence with less weapons, guns …show more content…
Gun control is a very wide reaching and deeply rooted issue to the American people. There are arguments made by both sides, against and for gun control. Some proponents argue everything from the constitution 's wording and date to the very central argument of reducing violence when there are fewer guns. Along with all of these arguable benefits of gun control there are some justifiable disadvantages. Some opposition of gun control would argue that; guns are valuable for self protection, criminal will get guns no matter what, and lower crime rates with more firearms. There are many facts to prove and disprove both sides. In the end, it is a personal choice where we stand on this topic. Our views about gun control stem from our involvement and knowledge of firearms and how they are used. It is hard for even the most opinionated of individuals to argue against firearms when they spend some time witnessing first hand the enjoyment of use firearms
Proponents of more gun control laws believe that the Second Amendment was intended exclusively for militias, that gun restrictions have always existed, and that gun regulations would prevent criminals from possessing firearms. However, Opponents claim that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own guns, that guns are needed for self-defense, and that gun ownership helps to dissuade crime. Because of this obvious difference, proponents of stricter firearm regulation demand more laws to help prevent mass shooting, and want reform in the area of background checks. Meanwhile, opponents of gun laws often accuse the proponents of manipulating a mass tragedy in order to further strengthen their fight. Gun ownership has been a tradition within the united states since before the country itself was formed.
Gun control has been a controversial issue for many years. Many citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would reduce the threat of crime. People have the right to bear arms for protection, or even just the pleasure of hunting and recreational activity. With the recent events involving firearms and mass shootings, people are skeptical whether to increase or decrease gun laws. Americans have a constitutional right to own handguns and stricter laws and licensing will not effectively save lives.
Gun Control Gun control over the years has been a controversial subject, with people arguing for both sides. The 2nd amendment states that everyone in the U.S. has a right to bear arms. Mass shootings and suicides by firearm have been a growing concern for many people living in the U.S. Numerous people making the argument that there should be more gun control. Having gun control would help lessen the deaths by firearms in the country for a variety of reasons.
Gun control is a topic that has been debated over the last few years. It is a subject that many people stand for and against the change in policy. Basically gun control would change the way firearms are regulated, by changing laws or polices that control how they are made, sold, owned, and used by civilians. However by trying to take away firearms from civilians would be infringing upon their rights as United States citizens. There are many ethical reasons why gun control should not be implemented towards law-abiding citizens such as it is hypocritical, neglects the reality of control, and is discriminating against gun owners.
One of the most controversial issues our nation faces today is gun control laws. This controversy has been created due to the different interpretations of the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution which states the right of citizens to bear arms; “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Cornell Law School). Anti-gun control laws believe that the amendment guarantees the right to bear any kind of firearms. On the other hand, we have does that believe that more controls laws should be implemented since the 2nd amendment was for the right of States to have an armed militia during wartime. Both sides have strong point, however, the safety of our children comes first, and a firearm means death in the wrong hands.
Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
In the past, the major gun control legislations that have been put into effect have not stopped people from obtaining firearms (Gun Control.) There have also been cases in the past where cities have attempted to ban handguns. After the ban was put into effect, murder rates tended to rise instead of drop, unlike what most people might assume. Crime rates and violence also skyrocketed after the bans were put into effect. Another problem with taking guns away, or banning them, is that the government cannot expect everyone to abide by the laws.
I support the side that wants gun control because we need to stop or limit all these shootings going on outside of a school where there are kids and on the streets or in a party just where ever we need to limit guns that people have. Now that you know a little about people with guns and that they are dangerous I will be telling you how schools can become targeted by one school shooting. (Concealed weapons). First, I will be explaining why people should be on my side and support me in gun control.
Gun control also limits our constitutionally derived right to own firearms. If gun control is enforced, law-abiding citizens will be forced to give up their guns and their right to own guns, while many criminals who own guns may illegally keep theirs. As the saying goes “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Guns are an important aspect of our society in many ways. They allow for protection, recreation, and hunting.
Loopholes are another part of this grand argument, used by the side opposed to gun control, saying that loopholes are impossible to close, while the pro gun control side argues that stricter gun control and background checks make these loopholes not an issue. Both sides can be easily argued, but there is only one side that can save countless lives. Stricter gun control will work to pr otect citizens by limiting gun violence, keeping Second Amendment rights, and closing gun loopholes. Gun control and background checks go hand in hand, as background checks act as an aid to enforce safety. Background checks significantly curb gun
In 1986 Ronald Reagan explained that while guns exist criminals will use them for their own gains but, in the same interview he also said that the only people who will be penalized will with heavy gun control are law abiding citizens. I believe gun control will solve some of America’s problems but an outright ban on assault weapons or firearms, in general, will make a bigger problem than it solved. Our forefathers believed that law-abiding citizens should have the right to bear arms to defend themselves against criminals and a tyrannical government. Mass shootings have killed hundreds in this country but a national prohibition on firearms won’t decrease murders in America. No one can deny that firearms are used to hurt or kill innocent people.
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.
Since the begining of America, the Founding Fathers wrote the strong-standing Bill of Rights with amendments to protect the country that had just recently won their freedom, but one amendment has been the top theme of controversies for centuries. Gun laws offend the Bill of Rights in so many ways and they prove ineffective. Gun Laws are relevant due to thousands of deaths and self-protection. The argument goes on but without guns there is militia, one of the main intents of the Second Amendment. These simple rules can reduce deaths, proven by millions of influential people.
Problems The current method of gun-control is flawed profusely in the United States. Americans are given the right to purchase weapons under the 2nd Amendment which is the right to bear arms. The right to bear arms is for one’s own defense that should not be infringed or taken in any way. Weapons should only be used to protect oneself (defense mechanism.)
Everyday in the United States, ninety families are changed forever; guns claim an average of ninety lives every day in the United States, 33,000 lives in a single year. Gun control has been a debate in the United States for many years and is constantly thrusted back into the public’s attention by horrific shootings. These shootings constantly cause individuals to petition the government to place stricter and stricter regulations of guns. However, these policies cannot be the solution to this problem. To determine a solution that will be both effective and constitutional, we must look at statistics and research that has been conducted to determine the best course of action.
