1. Why are you interested in participating in the Rising Phoenix Early College High School Program?
I am interested in the rising phoenix program because it would benefit me a lot not only in high school but also in the future. I love challenges and especially in math and science. I have been trying and will continue to try and take the most college classes I can while I am in high school. So far, I have taken advanced placement world history and am currently in American history 205 through my school's CCIHS program. I think RIsing Phoenix would help me with this because I would have the opportunity to finish high school with 60 college credits. In the future I would like to go into some type of career related to biology; I think that it

Describe a time when you overcame a serious challenge. Explain the details of the situation and how you handled things and worked through things.
A serious challenge I have faced is growing up with my grandparents. While most people say that I’m so lucky for it there is a lot they don’t know. I think one of the biggest challenges in it is the age gap, while most parents are about 30 years older than their children mine are 60. This posed a serious challenge at times because when I needed help with homework it was really hard for them to help me. After all, one they don’t remember everything from high school algebra, and two it changed a lot from when they learned it. One example of this I remember very clearly was when we first started multiplication in 4th grade, we were using a method with a rectangle and they had never learned it that way. And when I didn’t get it and asked for help they had no idea why there were a bunch of rectangles all over my homework and when I said that's how I learned it they got even more confused. This continues to this day but I learned how to fight it,

I also learned that my friends could be an excellent resources if they were in the same class as me. Another challenge this brought was being around people so much older than me a lot of the time. For example, all of my parent's friends were around their age so I would be surrounded by older adults a lot when I was younger. This posed a challenge since I was just always around people older than me, and that rubbed off on me. I feel that this caused me to be more mature from a younger age, which has its pros and cons. Because of this, I could always get along with my teachers, but it made it harder to make friends my age. When I was younger this was the most tragic thing for me, but now that I’m older I appreciate it. While at times I would just love to feel like a fifteen-year-old girl I feel I am more responsible and school is a lot easier if you get along well with your teachers. It also makes me feel like I look to my future a lot and try to make set plans like future
Analyzing Parental Relationships Have you ever watched the show “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” In modern education, younger generations seem to be surpassing their parents very quickly. In the poem “My Son Swears he has 102 Gallons of Water in His Body” by Naomi Shihab Nye, a son argues with his parents about what the reader can only assume to be homework in the form of a mathematical problem yet still deals with them despite the knowledge gap. In this poem, the conflict first appears whenever the child and his parents start arguing over a school problem in which he “did the problem [in school] and [his] teacher said [he] was right”
For example, because my discourse is more of a family than a community it has taught me that: even though you will come across people that you don’t like or get along with you still need to treat them with respect. Also, that you will come across classes where you will have to work together, just like in stage crew and there is more than one way to get your work done. Secondly, when in groups or having to deal with other individuals, they are human beings and will be different from you. But you cannot let other students walk all over you; and if you need to talk to a teacher it has taught me how to be assertive in my needs and wants. Without this skill, school would be much more difficult because without communication skills, you will fail.
Throughout high school I have tried to take classes that were not only challenging, but would also be relevant to my future. I have taken nine AP level classes since sophomore year, and I have thrived in the difficult coursework that is meant to be college level. So far, I have proven my hard work and dedication by passing all of the AP tests thus far. I have also taken advantage of the advanced math coursework that is two years ahead than normal. I began this track since the fifth grade, and I continued and progressed all these year.
I also learned about change, and how it isn’t something we should fear but accept and live with instead. Most importantly, it showed me the value of friendship and that we should help each other as much
Many people go through life changing battles, well here are some of the biggest ones that i’ve read. From Percy Jackson and his wild quests to find his mom, Brian a 13 year old boy facing life or death situations each day in the wild and the Logan family faces racism. So as we go along we can see how they overcome their challenges. Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon left Percy and his mother Sally on their own, not that he had a choice. But the gods took an oath that they were to not have children.
However, as the years went on I learned to become a more sophisticated person all thanks to a student-led organiztion. When I started preschool, the first real interaction I had with other children my age, made me shutdown. I would barely talked at school, my teachers started worrying of me. The school talked to my parents, asking if there had been anything traumatic that had happened
This was mainly the fact that during those few years, teenagers take rapid strides in puberty. By the end of my sophomore year, everyone around me was completely different person from who I was
Narrative essay Life throws many challenges at you, but you need to know when to tackle them and when not to. A challenge is something that Is a struggle for you and needs more attention than a problem. Now I know this from experience from the time that my baseball team was in the league finals and disaster struck out. The day was June 13, 2015. This day is a day that will always teach me something new and life mending every time that I bring it up.
One being, learning how to manage my time. There were weeks where we would have school all day, then practice till five, then a basketball game at six. It was extremely hard to study, cheer, work, and somehow have a social life. These situations helped me plan ahead to when I was going to finish homework or study for my upcoming tests. I will use this useful skill in college next year where i'll find myself always looking for time that I don't have.
Introductory Paragraph Hook: Think of a time you overcame adversity. How did you do it? How did you feel? Why did you do it?
I have learned to be more responsible and aware of the consequences that my actions cause. My experience with falling behind and making up credits due to my previous choices taught me to be more mindful about how I make decisions, and have driven me to be more goal-oriented and work harder towards my long-term goals. Additionally, I have developed a more flexible mindset which has shaped who I am and has allowed me to make more connections with people and to be open to change even if it's something that I am not used to. I consider my grandma one of my biggest strengths because she was a great supporter and motivator throughout my life. She has been my main motivation to attend college by always encouraging me to do the best I can and giving me

Parents should understand that kids are different than them because time is not those times that they have lived. Today many Americans are so busy because of harder conditions of working and lifestyle. Thereby, they spend most of their time for working hard, instead of spending their time with their family. For instance, most of the Americans even do not have a dinner around table with family members. Therefore, today most of the parents cannot understand their children and their time perspective, and it makes several conflicts among family members.
I learned that any barrier you face there is always an option to overcome it and be successful. I can grow by working my hardest on my school work and never giving up, even when things get hard. I also learned that time management is a very great skill to obtain at this time in my life, because college courses take time, effort, and lots of patience. I must give myself time to prepare for class work and especially exams. Having a schedule for my school work and my personal life is the best choice to help me stay on track.
This scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for students of GVSU, and I am honored to be considered for this scholarship. I believe that I am a great applicant for this scholarship, and that I deserve this scholarship. One reason I deserve this scholarship is because of my strong academic courses. Throughout my high school career, I pushed myself academically by taking a total of 10 AP classes and 7 honors classes. These classes were all challenging, yet I pushed through with determination to complete the classes to the best of my ability.
