College sports are hard work, practices take up about 60 hours a week. Does that sound like a job? College athletes as of now are not paid by the college. Even if an athlete is injured, the college is not required to pay the player’s injury. Even within the last 12 years the amount of money generated by 2 sports has increased by 300%, and the athletes still can be paid anything? College players should be paid for their efforts on and off the field, because some of these athletes end up not having enough money to continue going to college.
To begin the first claim towards why college players should be paid is financial problems. Money Can be a problem in general for just the average college student, add in that “student athletes spend up to 60 hours a week practicing”(Meshefejian), this can become a real issue. With this much time being taken up a week college players do not have enough time to have a job, and “have to leave school early because they don’t have enough money to continue” (Meshefejian). Not all players get full

If the “college athletes are paid they would be more motivated to stay in school, instead of joining professional teams”(Compensation For College Athletes). If these have 20 year old kids have a decent salary why would they want to risk it for a chance at nothing. These athletes can’t even make money from ads because “College athletes are forbidden from doing advertisements”(College Athletes Should Be Paid). If the school isn’t going to pay them, why does the school care if a company does, if anything wouldn’t just bring more revenue to the school? Lastly, if these athletes are paid the amount of under the table autographs and jersey sales would be greatly decreased. The main reason the players do this is for extra money, if they had the money already there’s a good chance this suspension isn’t as frequent. Motivation is a key reason why these athletes should be
“Lest you think I exaggerate, look up the case of the two athletes at the University of Iowa who started a T-shirt screening business and were threatened with ineligibility by the N.C.A.A. because their website mentioned that they met because they were both — brace yourself — swimmers” (Rosenberg, 2017). Paying collegiate athletes would also help develop athletes better if they do stay longer instead of rushing to go pro and then failing to be something because the they were not for that type of exposure. Injury is another reason why they should get paid. No matter what sport you play, you’re always putting your life on the line when you play that sport. “Paying players could guarantee them a degree of financial security, and prevent some from leaving prematurely” (Labaton,
Getting paid in college would help teach these players some responsibility before they are rewarded a big NFL/NBA contract. Players could make just enough money to be forced to make choices that can pave the way for more responsible decision making when the financial stakes become high. Many players will learn the value of money and the responsibility that comes from holding down a job. College football player’s should get paid to play because these players put themselves at risk for injury, college football is a job, not p.e, and it will help players adjust to college socially and economically. Colleges and the NCAA can make money selling jerseys and other souvenirs that might include the likeness of players, yet the actual players never receive a
The reasons why college athletes don't get paid when they are in college sports is because the coaches don't think the athletes won't get that much of recognized in the world and that's leaves them to find ways to get money and it can lead them to
I think college athletes should get paid while they’re still in college. College athletes should get paid because they play for that school, unheeding the dangers of getting hurt. Kevin Ware from Louisville broke his leg in a game. Luckily, he came back from the injury, but others might not be that lucky. Devon Walker, safety for Tulane University, was playing Tulsa University when he hit a player, causing him to be paralyzed.
Another reason why they should be paid is because of apparel. If athletes were to be paid for only one reason, it is because the NCAA and universities capitalize on both the team’s success and the players’ status for its own financial gain through the sales of apparel and other merchandise. When universities sell jerseys and t-shirts with popular numbers on them, they are literally selling the personhood of the person whose number is on the
College athletes should be paid because they put in many hours of practicing, they have to pay for living, and they cannot get a job. College athletes should be paid because they put in many hours of practicing. Some articles have said that athletes spend up to 40 hours a week in the gym, or practicing. Since the athletes are constantly working out they don't have time to make money. Without any money they are unable to buy extra food.
Even though some may think if colleges and universities start paying their athletes that would mean that there would be fewer teams and would make it more competitive for high school athletes to make it to the next level. Some may also think that colleges and universities need to pay college athletes who deserve to get paid due to the revenue they generate for the institutions. College athletes deserve to get paid
College athletes put in a lot of time, effort, and work into the sport they’ve played since they were young, but they aren’t getting paid for it. These student athletes deserve to be paid because they put in countless hours of hard work and balance sports with school work. The first reason athletes in college do deserve to be compensated is because they don 't have time to fit in work with a school and athletic schedule. College athletes don’t have time to get a real job. Student athletes have a very busy schedule, they don’t have time to fit in a job.
College athletes take many risks and make personal sacrifices in order to bring in revenue for their school, for this reason, they should be paid employees. The first reason in why college athletes should be paid is that college athletes take many risks. Depending on the scholarship, if an athlete is injured and unable to play they can lose their
If colleges began to pay their athletes, then they could build a bad reputation for being mercenary and lose their educational reputation If they are allowed to play, then it can be financially detrimental to the college because there are many flaws in the system. College athletes should not be compensated for their actions regarding athletic activities, no matter what sport or level they compete on. The idea that college athletes should or shouldn 't be paid
College athletes staying pure to the game College athletes should not be paid to play, they should not be paid to play because it is something that they have to work for and in a way it would replace scholarships. College athletes already receive scholarships and they are meant to help them with their schooling and education, not to play sports. College athletes are also students and most of them will already receive scholarship from the college. The scholarship alone should be plenty of enough money for a student, to be paid more on top of that would just be ridiculous and unreasonable. For many young athlete, going to college to play the game you love is a once and a lifetime opportunity and privilege.
Many universities supply their athletes with gyms, free health insurance, transportation, food, equipment, and the most important a free tuition. How much more do these athletes need? College athletes just like any student are still perfecting their skills for the real world. They are not yet ready to be paid a real salary for their doings. Just as an interior design major in college is not yet ready to be paid for her skills.
Why college athletes should be paid. College athletes should be getting paid because they are putting in so much time on their sport they spend an average of 43.3 hours per week dedicated to their sport. College athletes spend around 43.3 hours on just their sport, if they are spending that much time on sports how are they going to get money. A college student has to go to class and has to have some income of money if college athletes don't have time for a job it's going to be hard to get money for food and college. College athletes need to get paid so they can pay for college.
The million dollar question; should college athletes be paid? This is an immense debate, but if you were to ask me, I would say yes, college athletes should be paid. There are a plethora of reasons why college athletes should get paid. College athletes should get paid because of the amount of time they put into their sport, the amount of money everyone else is making off of them, and their overall importance to the school. There are a myriad of reasons that people can argue the opposite way, but, the reasons they should get paid definitely outweigh the reasons they shouldn’t get paid.
Should college athletes be paid? I think they should. I found three main reason why other people and myself think that college athletes deserve pay. One, you can just pay the sports that produce the most revenue. Two, these student athletes put in lots of work and even sometimes have to miss class to go to the sports event.
