First, Brutus uses ethos to justify that his “love to Caesar was no less than his” (III.ii.19). This manipulates the Plebeians into believing he and Caesar have a strong relationship. It also brings the Plebeians compassion and lets them know there is love between them even in his death. Pathos is also used by Brutus to honour Caesar through “tears for his love, joy for his fortune, honour for/ his valour, and death for his ambition.” (III.ii,27-28). This appeals to the Plebeians emotion making them feel as if Brutus’ recognition of Caesar justifies his death. Last, Brutus uses logos to make the Plebeians question if they would “rather Caesar/ were living, and die all slaves, than that Caesar were/ dead, to live all freemen? (III.ii.22-24). In Brutus' speech he uses logos to try to reason with the crowd whilst Antony uses pathos to control their emotions. Brutus explains that for the betterment of Rome Caesar had to die or else he would ruin the country and destroy the great empire. He at first has everyone on his side, that is of course until Antony speaks. When Antony speaks he gives examples of how Caesar wasn't going to ruin Rome and in fact how he was the best leader they had ever had. He says that Brutus and Cassius are murderers and that's all they are.
Antony knew this would have an impact on the plebeians and it certainly did. Finally Antony destroys Brutus’ argument. First off he reminds the plebeians that Caesar truly did care about all the people of Rome. “When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept” (III.2.90). He also brings up how he offered Caesar the crown three times and three times he refused it.
Both of the deceased leaders, Caesar and Lincoln, were well loved by many, and so the initial reaction of the public was to misunderstand the murderer’s intentions and feel only loss and hatred. Brutus, a prominent member of the Senate and a dear friend of Caesar’s, reminds the Plebeians of his relationship with Caesar. Brutus said, “not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more” declaring that he sympathizes with the Plebeians hurting and loss because he too lost a loved one (Shakespeare 45). By establishing the loving relationship between Caesar and Brutus, Brutus relates himself to a beloved leader; this carries those attributes that Caesar was loved for upon Brutus. Brutus is already well-known throughout Rome, and can easily gain respect since he had it from the public at one point.
In their introductory scene a discussion is taking place about Caesar's claim to the throne. Through this discussion the audience learns a lot about Cassius and Brutus’s values . In William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Brutus uses ethos, logos, pathos, and rhetorical devices to convince the Romans that the execution of Caesar was necessary for the greater good of Caesar himself and the people. When explaining why it was vital for Caesar to be killed, Brutus explains it wasn't that he “loved Caesar less,” rather that he “loved Rome more” (3.2.21-22). Brutus, however, also does a good job of establishing logos, by showing the people what is the effect of Caesar’s death. “Here comes his body, mourned by Mark Antony, who, though he had no hand in his death, shall receive the benefit of his dying, a place in the commonwealth, as which of you shall not? With this I depart, that, as I slew my best lover for the good of Rome,” (3.2.113) When Brutus states what they’re receiving the benefits of his death, he’s also saying that Julius living would be negative, essentially telling them they should be happy that he’s dead.
At the funeral, both of Caesar’s friends, Brutus and Antony, made a speech. In Brutus’s speech he was very concise and was saying that he did it all for Rome. Brutus used logos and ethos in his speech. To fortify his speech, he used logos which is logic and reason. In his speech, he says listen to my reasons and he goes onto his reasons that Caesar would have become ambitious and enslaved them all.
In Act III, Scene 2 of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Marc Antony is able to change the mood of the crowd. The commoners transform from a confused, depressed group of people to an angry mob wanting to get back at the conspirators for their despicable action. Antony manages to do so by using ethos, pathos, and logos. These three persuasive techniques all appeal to the audience in a different way. Ethos are phrases that relate to ethics or morals and make oneself sound fair and unbiased.
Brutus tries to impress the crowd by saying that Caesar was going to become a dictator. “Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?” (ii. III.L 22-24). Brutus gives this reason to make the people think this murderous act was honorable.
Unfortunately, Cassius uses Brutus’ altruistic characteristic and devout loyalty against him by sending fake letters with concerns regarding the crowning of Caesar for Brutus to read and be persuaded to join the conspirators. Cassius’ manipulation of Brutus serves as an example of how Shakespeare
(II, i, 53-55) which allows to say that he wants Rome to be just and do whatever it takes to maintain it away from any threat. Indeed, Brutus states this very clearly when he says, “If it’s for the good of all Romans, I’d do it even if it meant my death. Let the gods give me good luck only as long as I love honor more than I fear death.” (I, ii, 86-88), he explicitly says that the good of the majority is over any feeling or personal benefit which in this case is the love of Caesar for him and viceversa, and the throne. To conclude, Brutus is a complex character that is characterized by three recurrent traits: his well-intention, his hypocrisy, and his naivet.
Brutus wants to make the crowd feel like he is in a way the victim. In order to do that he says "As Caesar loved me I weep for him" so in a way the people feel bad for him. This emotional appeal did not persuade the audience considering the fact that he was if he truly did love Caesar as much as he said he would, then he would have tried to find a different route in getting rid of Caesar as emperor. Antony goes with the approach of making the people of Rome feel guilty. He tells the citizens "You all love him once not without cause what cause withholds you then to mourn for him" so they could reflect on their attitude towards his death.
Brutus has negatively affected the outlook of Rome and created more harm than good for the situation. Not only did it harm Rome, but it brought his own demise and hallucinations of Caesar’s ghost. Brutus’s speech to the plebeians after Caesar’s death, about his dilemma and his viewpoint towards Caesar, influenced the viewpoints of the plebeians and causes them to believe he is the best roman until Antony speaks to them. Marcus Junius Brutus and Mark Antony both deliver speeches to justify the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE and both use Logos and Ethos to convince the Roman citizens to join their sides. Both sides deliver their speeches with vehemence and start by elucidating why Brutus killed Caesar to begin with, why Antony’s desire for revenge is justified, and what the future of Rome will be because of his death.
