The Civil War was a great turning point for Americans and their ideas and thoughts of freedom. Slavery began to be questioned because of this change, as several writings express the belief of everyone having freedom and equality. For example, the “Gettysburg Address” by Abraham Lincoln strongly expresses that every man was created equal and everyone should put that into action. Another great source expressing equality is “Ain’t I a Women” by Sojourner Truth. The Civil War reshaped ideas and beliefs Americans once had and molded them into understanding that all people men, women, blacks, and whites are all created equal. He appeals to the audiences emotions in this speech by paying homage for the soldiers in the civil war, implying “that from these honored dead we take increased devotion … that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain” (Lincoln, 1863). Lincoln does this to emphasize the greatness of these soldiers, dying so that everyone can be equal, ending slavery and uniting the country. The war not only strengthened the connection of the states, specifically between states in the north and south, but it also resulted in the end of the old way of life in the south, known as the old south. The way of life style in the Old South was loved by many, Rhett from Gone With the Wind being one of them. The second event that occured was the Civil War that went on from 1861 to 1865, and the reason behind the Civil War was to put an end to slavery, so slaves can have equality. The Final event that happens during the Civil war was the Gettysburg Address given by Abraham Lincoln and it was to honor the fallen soldiers who died during the Civil War or the Battle of Gettysburg, and he also gave a reminder that all men are created equal, which is kinda like people’s equality. The reason that people are fighting is because they all want equality and that means the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.
