We often find that it is simpler to stay hidden in the dark, rather than step out into the light. As citizens it is our responsibility to call out our leaders if they are not taking notice of what we, the people, want or need. The animals, in Animal Farm, overthrew their farmer and attempted to form a fair government, but soon became dictated to, by the pigs. The book records the evolution of tyranny to totalitarianism which became as terrible as their first situation. In Animal Farm, George Orwell illustrates that it is the responsibility of the citizens to stand up against injustice and inequality. As portrayed in the book, society will not change if the citizens make no effort to use their voices to make and drive change. We can become oppressed by our leaders and so can our way of life. We find that it is easier to keep reserved and quiet when voicing our opinion is needed, and can easily become manipulated. The animals in Animal Farm dealt with a lot of injustice and inequality. Their government was …show more content…
Napoleon mislead and misinformed the animals, under his power. The animals had their own opinions and beliefs but weren’t educated enough to propose them. The farm came to know that “some animals are more equal than others”(134), their last state was as bad as their first. Napoleon formed an alliance with the human enemy to establish his personal dictatorship, the ruling of the pigs became more and more indistinguishable from their human neighbors. “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to tell which was which” (141) Orwell’s message again, is that history can repeat itself, we must be careful and prevent that from happening, or we could end up in same situation as before, like the animals
Some will blindly accept their lack of freedom but others will vehemently fight for their right to pursue happiness, would you? The story of Animal Farm follows a group of farm animals that revolt and drive away their human leaders. They change the new system and proceed to create a system where all animals are equal. This can be compared to the society of Anthem where people's rights are restricted. Freedom and will is taken away and directed towards the common goal of always helping others and being a group.
In the novel written by George Orwell, the presence of narcissism amongst the pigs results in unjust control of the animals, as well as deprivation of their freedom and the ability to interact with the natural world. The use of propaganda within Animal Farm shows a great example of how media controls citizens in a dystopia. In order for the pigs to maintain total control of the farm’s society, they manipulate the other animals. The author presents, “he announced that, by a special decree of Comrade Napoleon, Beasts of England had been abolished” (Orwell 88).
In her critically acclaimed novel One Corpse Too Many, author Ellis Peters wrote, “All of the things of the wild have their proper uses. Only misuse makes them evil.” The possession and usage of power is an especially slippery slope. In George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm, a main recurring theme revolves around power and how those who hold it will ultimately fall into corruption. The desire for power stems from greed, but power also fuels greed.
Animal Farm- Lies and Deceit The book Animal Farm by George Orwell portrays the theme of how someone can lie and deceive others to get what they want just like how the two pigs Napoleon and Squealer used lies and deceit to gain power over Animal Farm. Napoleon lied to other animals, Squealer lied to other animals and they both deceived the other animals, but the sad part is that neither of them lied for the better of the other animals. They both lied to get what they want- power over the animals and the farm.
Furthermore, Napoleon gives the other animals the impression he was the sole leader of the rebellion on Animal farm and makes Snowball -a leader who wanted what was best for the animals- seem like an enemy who was in cahoots with Farmer Jones since long before the animals took over the farm. Napoleon and Squealer (another “fat cat” pig.) always put the blame on Snowball whenever something went wrong in the farm to avoid having the blame fall on them. Napoleon is an exemplary example of just how selfish and hypocritical people can be in furthering their own aims because he continued to subtly but purposely change the seven rules put in place as the pillars of animalism. For example, Napoleon and the other pigs move into Farmer Jones’s house and sleep in his bed after commanding “No animal shall sleep in a bed”, so he changes the commandment to read “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”.
The quote by Lord Acton, “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” is a good example of what is happening in the book Animal Farm by George Orwell. The pigs immediately gain control and leadership of the farm and eventually start to abuse the power. The pigs abuse their power by changing the commandments, living in luxury, and by treating the animals poorly. First and foremost, the pigs start changing the commandments to fit their acts and desires. In the beginning of the story, the animals decide on fair rules that everyone on the farm should abide by.
Thesis Statement: Dictators Create decisions for what can be said and done. The animals in the novel Animal Farm had created a set of commandments that all the animals had to follow, then one day the group Napoleon and the other pigs broke the fourth commandment by sleeping in beds, the Animals on the farm read the commandment and it decreed “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets” (Orwell 67). The quote supports the thesis for the reason that Napoleon has changed the rules so that he is not breaking them, so that the other animals will not be tempted to confiscate Napoleon's power. The statement supports the quote because Napoleon decision to change the fourth commandment. Napoleon changes the fourth commandment without the vote of the other animals which leaves the animals no choice but to go along with the change for the reason that the animals have been brain washed.
George Orwell portrays Napoleon as Stalin in many similar ways. Just as some leaders use dictatorship to control political aspects, pigs also use dictatorship to control animals. Animal Farm uses characterization to suggest that although cruel leadership can be effective, it will lead to
However, Orwell depicted, “The animals would still assemble on Sunday mornings to salute to the flag, sing Beasts of England, and receive their orders for the week; but there would be no more debates” (Orwell 54). In the past, the animals had the ability to speak out at the farm Meetings, even if they chose not to. However, now that Napoleon took this right away from them, he got to be in charge of all the decisions for the farm and no one could contradict him. As Animal Farm developed, the pigs slowly disregarded animals’ rights and opinions, and the farm subtly gained more dystopian
Animal Farm Literary Analysis The rebellion of Animal Farm was to escape man and his cruel ways, but can they escape the reality of power and corruption? Animal Farm is a novella written by George Orwell. In this book the animal 's desire more freedom than they are allowed. In order to achieve an equal and harmonious society they rebel against farmer Jones. Rather than resulting in a utopian civilization the animals are oppressed by the very pig who encouraged their rebellion.
One dominant theme in animal farm is totalitarianism and abuse of power. Totalitarianism is defined as a political system in which the state possesses complete authority over the society and controls all aspects of public and private life whenever necessary. The author criticized totalitarianism and believed that it was inevitable in a communist system, as those put in charge will result in the abuse of their power. The theme Orwell intended to get across was that all totalitarian regimes are the same and those who hold power will do anything to maintain it. The pigs, who were the leaders, frequently displayed this throughout the novel.
“All animals are equal.” This is the foundation for the novel Animal Farm in which farm animals rebel against a drunken, abusive farmer and create their own society which they think is flawless. Can everyone be equal while societal structure remains operational? The characters in Animal Farm by George Orwell show that every person is different and that societal structure is based on factors such as intelligence, power, influence, and strength with leadership and power as a constant struggle between multiple forces. Every animal in the book had a different role and a relationship with other animals in the farm that affected his/her societal position and power.
The corrupting effect of power has divided the united farm and drifted the animals far from the ideals of the revolution. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, an ideal utopian society cannot be achieve because there was a lack of equality, cooperation, and the farm’s corrupt leadership. Equality

Because the animals in Animal Farm are so easily manipulated because of their ignorance, we want to give the citizens our society the best education possible so that they will be able to speak freely about their concerns. Every week there is a meeting in the community center where citizens can talk to the community leaders and address the problems the citizens feel they have. This way the citizens feel free to speak their mind and also feel that they can effect change within the community and are heard and cared about by the elected officials. Every two years these government officials face a new election period when they have to run again to keep their status of the government official. If an official is re-elected, he will stay in office for the next two years.
