What does resilience really mean to you? The literal definition to resilience is the ability to cope with problems and setbacks. In the story Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, she shows us all different kind of ways that the characters in her story used the skills that Kendra Cherry was talking about, to help them out of every situation. In this story it shows how certain situations affect people in different ways and how each person goes through seven skills. The characteristic that Louie undergoes is the skill of Strong Problem-Solving. The Strong Problem-solving skill is when a crisis emerges, people are able to spot the solution that will lead to a safe out-come. However, if you are not a non-resilient person you sometimes develop tunnel vision, which basically mean that you fail to notice important details or take advantages of oppurtunities. In this excerpt from the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Laura showcases how these three men get stranded on an island and they must find how to get back home. The first obstacles that they face was first when they did not have any food. The men were running on fumes for both food and water, and they felt like there was nothing for them to do. This was until Louie noticed a bird flying, got an idea, and slowly inched his hand closer and closer to the bird. All in one go, Louie closed his hand, and while the bird is pecking he closed his hand and then snapped the bird 's neck. In order to get the meat from the bird, Louie
Louie Zamperinis story is one of perseverance, strength, and courage. The central idea of this book is to never give up and keep on going, even in the darkest situations. This novel explores many issues and ideas, but the one that stands out the most is the personal one. Laura Hillenbrand uses the themes of suffering and perseverance in the novel Unbroken to show how if a person believes he/she can do it, it can be done. The author demonstrates this in many ways telling the story of his childhood until adulthood.
Many people believe that resilience is only about survival with strength, but really resilience can be surviving through any means. In the story, "Unbroken" a man named Louis Zamperini and his friends crashed a ship during World War II. After the crash, Louis, and two others by the name of Mac and Phil survive and must use resilience to survive in the ocean and to get back. Louis Zamperini's most essential characteristic of resilience however is strong problem-solving skills, with him being able to fix most problems they come in contact with and with the other two being the opposite and needing their problems fixed.
Resilience in The Break The Break is a novel that has constant conflicts and issues occuring, from mental health issues to addictions and death to gangs, there is always conflict. Many of the characters find a way to deal with this conflict with various skills, one of the most occurring is their quality of resilience. Laura Vermette demonstrates all the seven C’s of resilience - competence, confidence, connection, character, contribution, coping and control - in her book, The Break, through different characters and situations while showing how individuals would be unable to survive and grow without resilience.
Being resilient in tough situations can be substantial in some cases. To be resilient means one has great wit, especially in a 'finding a way out ' scenario. It can even be the key to survival, as can be shown in a short excerpt from Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. It gives a great example of resilience based off of a situation that Louie Zamperini finds himself and crew in as their plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean. What characteristic is most important in helping Louie survive?
In the memoir Unbroken, Laura Hillenbrand and Louie Zamperini show that having a determined mindset can help get through the horrors of POW camps. The POW camp Louie was in was terrible. He would get beaten everyday for no reason and be forced to do hard labor. The author uses words such as “broken”, “fractured, and “shattered” and paired them with the word “POW” to show that the Japanese soldiers had no mercy against the American soldiers. Throughout the POW camp terrible things happen to Louie and he is forced to see horrible events.
The determination to live comes from human nature. But the urge of giving up when we come across a difficult problem is also a part of human nature. There a few people in this world that have the characteristics of resilience. As author Kendra Cherry describes them, "People that are able to keep their cool have what psychologists call resilience, or an ability to cope with problems and setbacks" (Source A; Cherry, 1). An example of someone who has the characteristics of resilience is a bombardier name Louis (Louie) Zamperini.
According to “10 Traits of Emotionally Resilient People”, resilience is a belief in oneself, yet also a belief in something larger than oneself. Lisa mainly uses three forms of resilience love, perseverance, and music to pull through her hard times.
The theoretical notion of personal resilience has been long explored. Charles Darwin a famous philosopher proclaims “It is not the strongest that survives, but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself” (Megginson). Essentially, people are able to survive, if they adapt to the world around them. Octavia E. Butler creates this notion in her dystopian novel. In the year of 1993, Octavia E. Butler wrote the novel Parable of the Sower.
“Dignity is as essential to human life as water, food, and oxygen. The stubborn retention of it, even in the face of extreme physical hardship, can hold a man 's soul in his body long past the point when the body should have surrendered it” (Hillenbrand 189). In the novel Unbroken, written by Laura Hillenbrand, Louis “Louie” Zamperini goes through several life-threatening experiences. After being a troublemaker as a child, and an Olympic athlete, Louie straps up his boots and becomes a bombardier for the Army Air Corps. After a traumatizing crash and a forty-six day survival at sea, Louie is taken captive by Japanese officials.
War Combat, loyalty, enmity, bloodshed, and duty, all words that fit under the category of war. The novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is about Louis Zamperini a strong willed man raised in Torrance, California. He started as a young troublemaker until he discovered his passion for running in high school. That very passion led him to compete in the Olympics. Later he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, a brave decision that would change his life.

Across all 3 pieces of literature, "The Art of Resilience" by Hara Estroff Marano, "The Third and Final Continent" by Jhumpa Lahiri, and "The Other Wes Moore" by Wes Moore share a common theme: one's actions could alter the fate of another. Each fate that changed was unique to the story and the driving force behind the plot. Every piece of literature expressed this theme in a similar way in which fates could be changed through love, experience or even concern for another's wellbeing. The text "The Art of Resilience" by Hara Estroff Marano employed the theme-one's actions can change another's fate- by administering many specific examples demonstrating the relationship between resilience and the development of one's destiny. The text given definition of resilience is

It is an ordinary process for humans to cope up with “demonstrable risks” (Masten, 2001) i.e. threats that have noticeably brought unwanted issues in one’s life. Resilience can be defined on two foundations; risks and positive adaptation. It is a quality of a person to accommodate with unfavorable alterations in life derived as a result of exposure to risks such as financial crisis, divorce, health problems or disaster. Therefore, resilience cannot exist in absence of risks.
According to Masten (2001) “resiliency refers to a class of phenomena characterized by good outcomes in spite of serious threats to adaptation or development” (p. 228). Garmezy (1991) considers the intelligence level of an individual and ability to possess the mind power to tackle an adverse situation as one pleases as the core characteristics of a resilient individual. Garmezy (1991) resiliency framework allows student affairs professionals is to examine the strengths of disadvantaged students who are faced with various life stressors, but
