Research question: How does Chinatown, as Chinese society fit into the Canadian Society? There are many Chinatowns across Canada and around the globe. Chinatown is a “meeting place” where people encounter, interact and soon depart is able to accumulate different senses, specially for Chinese in Canada. Chinatown gathers and link all the Chinese together and give them authority and identity to stay in Canada, as well as helping them fit into the Canadian Society. From a critical reading of literary text, Diamond Grill by Fred Wah, I want to examine on what Chinese have faced before and how Chinatown fit into the Canadian Society. “In Nelson my father joins the Lions Club”, describes how Fred Wah Sr. faking it by telling the story when he was giving an official speech in front of the commerce club members, misspelled the word “soup” for “sloup” ad how he joked around by faking the misspelling as a Chinese idiom (Wah 66). Other than faking it in language, faking it in food also helped with the relationship between Chinese and Canadian. Liu describes the restaurant Diamond Grill “unlike most Chinese Canadian restaurants with only typical improvised imitation of Empire cuisine”(Liu 227). Therefore, they serves “faked” dishes, a mix of Chinese and Canadian ingredients, such as on of the popular order, “mixed grill”. It is different from authentic American grill with only roast meat, is made of beef, livers and sweetbreads (Wah 2). The combination of Western and Eastern dishes attract customers of different ethnicities. “The Chinese restaurant where the food is mad and consumed becomes a stage on which signs of hybridity are performed” (Liu 228). As the Chinese restaurants usually located in Chinatown, so more and more Canadian will come to Chinatown. This can better the relationship between Chinese and Canadian, and Chinatown is not only a place where gathering Chinese together, but also gather Canadian with Chinese, and encourage them to have more interaction to each other.
