Research question: How does Chinatown, as Chinese society fit into the Canadian Society? There are many Chinatowns across Canada and around the globe. Chinatown is a “meeting place” where people encounter, interact and soon depart is able to accumulate different senses, specially for Chinese in Canada. Chinatown gathers and link all the Chinese together and give them authority and identity to stay in Canada, as well as helping them fit into the Canadian Society. From a critical reading of literary text, Diamond Grill by Fred Wah, I want to examine on what Chinese have faced before and how Chinatown fit into the Canadian Society. “In Nelson my father joins the Lions Club”, describes how Fred Wah Sr. faking it by telling the story when he was giving an official speech in front of the commerce club members, misspelled the word “soup” for “sloup” ad how he joked around by faking the misspelling as a Chinese idiom (Wah 66). Other than faking it in language, faking it in food also helped with the relationship between Chinese and Canadian. Liu describes the restaurant Diamond Grill “unlike most Chinese Canadian restaurants with only typical improvised imitation of Empire cuisine”(Liu 227). Therefore, they serves “faked” dishes, a mix of Chinese and Canadian ingredients, such as on of the popular order, “mixed grill”. It is different from authentic American grill with only roast meat, is made of beef, livers and sweetbreads (Wah 2). The combination of Western and Eastern dishes attract customers of different ethnicities. “The Chinese restaurant where the food is mad and consumed becomes a stage on which signs of hybridity are performed” (Liu 228). As the Chinese restaurants usually located in Chinatown, so more and more Canadian will come to Chinatown. This can better the relationship between Chinese and Canadian, and Chinatown is not only a place where gathering Chinese together, but also gather Canadian with Chinese, and encourage them to have more interaction to each other. Chapter six examines the anti-Chinese sentiment with the emerging class antagonism and turmoil between white capitalists and workers. The unwelcomed arrival of Chinese immigrants brought along their own social organizations such as the huiguan, fongs, and tongs. These types of social organizations secured areas of employment and housing for Chinese immigrants in California. This social structure that was unknown to Anglos led them to also categorize Chinese on the same level as Indians by depicting them as lustful heathens whom were out to taint innocent white women. These images were also perpetuated onto Chinese women, thus, also sexualizing them as all prostitutes.
Everyone in Seattle might be familiar with a place called Chinatown. It is a place where you can feel a Chinese-like atmosphere. It was also constructed as the International District station (Thumbnail History). The Chinatown – International District has been the historical, cultural, and political center for Seattle’s Asian American communities. For the first generation immigrants, it was their first home in Seattle.
In the novel “American Born Chinese” by Gene Luen Yang (2006), it talks about three different people’s stories. The author starts off with telling a story about a monkey called the Monkey King, who lives in the jungle, seeking for higher power to become considered a god in the book. The author also tells a story about an American born Chinese boy named Jin Wang, who moves from San Francisco and struggles with fitting in at a new school. The last story the author tells is about a boy named Danny who has his cousin Chin-Kee from China visit every year. Danny ends up struggling to keep his reputation in adequate shape at school after his cousin visits causing him to switch schools often.

Chinese Immigrants in Northern California Throughout its history the United States has seen a great ebb and flow in the amount of immigrants entering the country. For a country that was founded by immigrants many of its policies in the 19th and 20th centuries sought to exclude and limit the amount of immigrants coming from many continents, including Asia and Africa. Chinese Immigrants increasingly started showing up in Northern California at the start of the gold rush in 1849 and would establish a large enclave known as China Town in San Francisco. Immigrants from China were particularly targeted with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, that made illegal, the influx of Chinese laborers that had been migrating to the US just a few years prior.
Japanese Canadians have been a part of Canada since the early years of Canada’s development in the 1870s. After the bombing occurred in Pearl Harbour, “the fear of a Japanese invasion quickly spread throughout the west of Canada” (The Canadian Encyclopedia), and this resulted to the internment of Japanese Canadians. These old fashion traditions and values are visible throughout the short story “Yin Chin,” written by Lee Maracle. This story follows the oppression of the Chinese and First Nations communities in early Vancouver and the internal and external conflicts they faced due to racism. From the very beginning of the story, we get a sample of what went on through the heads of individuals of different ethnicities and the old fashion values they possess. At the beginning of the story “Yin Chin,” the narrator walks into a restaurant filled with Chinese and explains “It is my reflexive action on my part to assume that any company that isn’t Indian company is generally unacceptable,” showcasing the reflexive thought process that went through people’s minds if they weren’t the same skin pigment (156). They found the restaurant full and that there were no places to sit because “there aren’t any Indians in the room” (156).
In this day and age, today’s countries and their cultures are immensely different and unique in comparison to each other. China and Canada are no exceptions. The Chinese, known for their famous silk production and their Great Wall of China, hold an impressive history ranging over 5000 years. Canada on the other hand, has only been in the game for 150 years. The British colonization in 1867 had a major impact on the First Nations and has left a serious mark on their community.
Born in Vancouver 1921, John Porter shattered the conventional image of Canada as a classless society and demonstrated the ethical inequality within our culture. In his research book The Vertical Mosaic, he proved Canada to be a highly stratified society. Important to the development of Canadian sociology, The Vertical Mosaic, provided Canadians with a reality check, unveiling the fact that our projected image is opposite to factuality and revealed the discrimination within power in our society. Within our current capitalistic society, people tend to disregard class and Canada is still viewed as a middle class society with ethnic inequality still as a ruling issue.
Fred Jr knows that what ever he does to fit in as a Canadian, the culture his father raised him to love will always be a part of who he is. Fred Sr. taught him that “a Chinaman can always find his way around the country by knocking on the kitchen doors of Chinese restaurants”(17). The kitchen was a place where the culture all returns and Chinese-Canadians are free to have whatever social identity they choose. They get to feel comfortable in their background, and food draws Fred and his father towards their heritage. The restaurant is something they both have in common and is a place that Fred Jr was raised, which is why he will always have a piece of his father in the back of his mind.

The world often defines the people within it, instead of people going off to discover their own identity themselves. Race, ethnicity and other factors like it describe who we are but not represent our identity. In David Hwang’s 1996 play “Trying to Find Chinatown” Hwang considers the role of race and ethnicity in how we identify ourselves and how others identify us.
