Developing positive relationships by using effective communication is an important part of working with children and young people as well as working alongside adults. Positive relationships can benefit everyone in the classroom situation, it can encourage children to feel secure and able to participate, and to enable everybody to understand what is expected of them in the situation.Using positive communication is also a good way of being a positive role model to children and young people. To become a good communicator you first need to ensure you are a good listener, taking the time to listen to how and what a person is saying will help you to form your reply in a way that will ensure that the communication is effective and that everybody understands. Showing that you are interested in what they have to say will also help them to feel that you are interested in them further helping to develop your relationship. Remembering facts about their life and interests show that you have remembered something about them which can make them feel like you see them as important. This is a really effective way of helping to develop a childs confidence as well. You should make sure that you are clear in what the purpose of what you are saying is, ensure that what you are saying will be understood by the recipient to avoid any miss understanding. Showing consideration towards the other person will also help to develop a good relationship, consider things that may be happening in their life outside of the school environment as this could cause them to be feeling upset or angry which can affect how they come across and wether the feel like communicating at that time. It is highly important that you are sure that the person you are talking to understands what you are talking about and have asked them so that they can digest information and join in the conversation without feeling lost and that they are unable to follow you whilst you talk to them. The same rapport needs to be built, being respectful with one another and ensuring that you are actively listening and showing interest in the other person. However, when in a school setting it is very important to ensure that when communicating with children you maintain that professional relationship as an adult/carer and ensure that they understand your role as this. Physical contact should not be actively encouraged when communicating with children. This is hard to avoid when working with younger children as they do often initiate contact like hugs and hand holding. I think it is important for teachers to establish relationships with their students; not only for teachers to learn about their students but also for the students to learn about their teacher. It is also important for there to be a real world connection within the classroom. I have found classes most beneficial when the teachers have branched out from the class subject. There are many things that make a teacher “good”, but it is rare to find a teacher who will make a lasting impression on their students.
Effective communication is vital in building an open and positive relationship with children, young adults and adults. To be able to build a positive relationship it needs to be built on trust and honesty resulting in a nurturing and calm environment. Being able to demonstrate and use positive language and behaviour. To communicate appropriately to whomever you are speaking to and adapting your tone, body language to the age of the child or adult, and supporting the needs of a child/young adult, ensuring there are good lines of communication which are clear and precise when working with adults.
I know that information because I was able to build positive relationships with my students. I believe that is the most crucial portion within a classroom and the classroom environment. You cannot effectively engage, and educate your students if you do not know what motivates them, interests them, and how they learn best. It makes learning more fun for both teachers and students, you involving your students in their learning, validating them as both individuals and as students too. As a teacher it is also important to relate to your students and provide them with real world experiences and application for the academic content taught in the classroom.
When reflecting over how I have created positive professional relationships with my students throughout these last two years of teaching, has truly allowed me to see what great bonds I have been able to create in such a short time with all of my students. Living in a rural farm community, in which I grew up for most of my life, allowed me to easily form positive relations with my students because I knew most of them as children. As a younger teacher I have had to explain to students that I am a friendly person and teacher but I am not your friend.
