“One brave deed makes no hero” (John Greenleaf Whittier). A hero is a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Guy Montag (the main character) is portrayed to be a hero. However as John Greenleaf Whittier once said one brave deed makes no hero. While Guy Montag shows some qualities of hero he shows many more of a non hero; for example he has no leadership skills, and he is a criminal. First Guy Montag cannot be considered a hero because, he has no leadership skills. Almost every action he takes in the book he does alone. In fact the only person he gets to follow him throughout the story is Faber, and even he only does it because he’s a coward. ‘“My cowardice is of such a passion, complementing the revolutionary spirit that lives in its shadow”’(Bradbury 90). Faber doesn’t want to be a coward anymore so he decides to work with Montag to legalize books. Another thing about leadership is its an art. People can’t just become a leader, it’s inside of them just waiting for an opportunity to reveal itself. “Educators, health professionals, and parents all agree that as society grows more complex, young people are in greater need than ever for grounding in the basic values that determine character”(Hirschmann 12). John McCain is a prime example of a hero. He was captured and tortured for years and ended up being an American war hero. However, some people don’t even consider him a hero. If this argument exists, Montag should not even be in the discussion of heroism. If he can’t be considered a hero, Montag can’t either. Now take a second and look to the future. Modern society is pretty close to the society portrayed in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. If society ever needs a hero, would he be like
