Field Placement Reflection This semester, I observed in Ms. Scott’s fifth grade classroom at Thurmont Elementary School. There were about 25 students in the class, and there were more boys than girls. Ms. Scott’s classroom was a positive learning environment for the students. The classroom was very welcoming and decorated with bright colors and posters. In the front of the room, there was a “Wall of Encouragement” where the students could post messages. This wall encompassed the attitude of the classroom. During my observations, I usually observed the science lesson and then the beginning of the writing lesson. Instruction and Learning Activities During a few of my visits, the students had extra recess. This was something that they had …show more content…
One way that teachers can use reinforcers in the classroom is to award points (reinforcement) for good behavior and take away points (punishment) for bad behavior (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2002). In Ms. Scott’s classroom, there were various reinforcements used to regulate behavior. As an entire class, the students could earn points for good behavior. When going to their specials, like music or art, the class got ranked from 1- 10 for behavior and that number was added to the class total for points. They could also earn points for all being on task or working quietly. There was a goal set to reach a certain amount of points and when the students reached that, they earned a reward like extra recess. The students were then divided into color groups based on where they sat. Each group could earn or lose points depending on their behavior. Then as a table, they could earn rewards like the table with the most points could line up first. Then, the students were all responsible for their own behavior. Ms. Scott used clips that could be moved between blue (the best), green, yellow, and red. If the students were moved all the way down to red, then there was a phone call home and it students were moved up to blue then they received “cougar cash”. The cougar cash allowed students to “buy” things such as a homework pass, lunch with the teacher, or pick your own partner. Using the various reinforcements in the classroom made the students accountable for their behavior as a class, table, and
Afterwards, she will lead the class in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, and in the singing of several period appropriate songs. Next, students will be equipped with slates, chalk, pencils, and McGuffey’s Readers, which were a series of graded primers that were widely used as textbooks by American schools throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The schoolmistress will then instruct the students on several subjects, specifically penmanship, arithmetic, reading, and spelling. Older students will be expected to assist the younger students with their lessons, as was accustomed in most nineteenth-century, one-room schoolhouses. Additionally, several students will be allocated various schoolhouse chores to complete throughout the day.
"Line up everyone!" Mrs. Rogers, my 5th grade teacher, commanded my class to do after the announcements. We followed her instructions and did so. In the second floor of Kaneland Blackberry Creek Elementary School, Mrs. Rogers's class, Mrs.Riley's class, and Miss Owen's class were all lined up ready to go downstairs to the busses. Once all the classes got quiet, we walked down the hallways and outside!
Where will the time come from? Who will be responsible for the students during this time? How will these people be compensated? Is this an additional responsibility of the classroom teacher? This case study will take a closer look at the implementation, pluses and deltas, of a recess program at a Pinellas County Elementary School.
The lead teacher went on break and a substitute teacher entered the classroom. The assistant teacher shouted at the children to sit down at the table and to be quiet while they waited for lunch to arrive. The children ran around the classroom, talking loudly with their friends. Some settled down in their spots for lunch, but continued misbehaving at the table. The substitute teacher and assistant both requested repeatedly for the children to lower their voices.
So they will move around or get in groups and do an active. The environment in the classroom was very friendly and open. The desk were like in the middle of the room. So it feels like you are not left out.
They drew straws to determine their role as either the 'teacher ' or 'learner ', although this was fixed to ensure the real participant was always the 'teacher '.
Where should I begin? Should I start with the fact that fitter children do better in school? How students focus better after recess or all the future skills children learn at recess? There are so many good reasons for recess, yet people are still arguing against it. It has a big part in education by making it easier for the students and teachers.
On the first day of the exercise the blue-eyed children were given pride of place in the classroom. They were given extra recess time, a second helping of food at lunch, and they were allowed to
Along with race, gender plays an important factor in whether or not a student is successful in Mr. Giblin’s classroom. Sixty percent of Mr. Giblin’s students are females, while the other forty percent are males. It is unclear if any identify as something else, though there are no clear signs leading to this being present in the classroom. While we typically think male and female students will typically socialize with students of the same gender, this is not always the case with this selection of students. While there are sections of females who primarily socialize with only female students, most of the students cooperated and mingled with their fellow classmates regardless of their gender.
These days you see operant conditioning being used everywhere, you see them in homes, in schools and even in work places. Both of these forms of reinforcements increase or decrease the chances of good and bad behavior. An example was also shared about my 4 year old son, although he is catching on to what I am doing but he is understanding the importance of consequences and its making him think twice before taking any action. When you create a schedule for the reinforcement it increases the likelihood of the behavior of children and adults to always be good due to the positivity that follows
On the first section of the whiteboard near the door are the class calendar and large-print signs with the login information for Moodle and GoogleDocs. There are also two inspirational quote posters along with the notecards with the names of the ten students on it. On the last section of the whiteboard is three columns. The first column is Entertain with the short definition
The Use of Positive Reinforcement To increase the overall behavior of students, positive reinforcement is a motivating technique to be used in a classroom. Positive reinforcement is a gentle and effective method to implement discipline in the classroom, where students understand the importance of good behavior, and as an outcome students behave well (S, 2016). According to Charlie S (2016), positive reinforcement has been seen to be a more viable procedure than punishment. Actually, it can make children to concentrate on the positives and encouraging them is a valuable approach to guarantee good behavior.
Within the classroom itself, there were kites pasted on the top of the windows, plushy toys of Star Wars on the teacher’s desk and the clock with the numbers related to Math. The second subject was Biology, and within the classroom, there were diagrams and models of the human body
There are two types of reinforcement there is positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. Positive Reinforcement is where you are providing a consequence and a reward. An example of this would be if a teacher gives you candy every time you complete your homework you will be more likely to repeat this behavior in the future. Negative Reinforcement is where you stop the behavior or remove an unpleasant experience. For example, If you do not complete your homework you will get a 0 to avoid getting a 0 you will complete your homework this strengths the behavior of making sure your homework is
