During the course of every individual's life their experiences help in the overall understanding of themselves. In the novel fifth business Robertson Davies uses characters experiences to shape their self-knowledge. Davies uses the themes of career, religion, and relationships to aid in their journey of finding themselves. The first theme that fifth business utilizes, is career. Many people choose their careers based on their personality and characteristics, sometimes these characteristics can develop and increase to show the true colors of oneself. One’s career can help increase their self knowledge. Later in Boy Staunton’s life, he becomes interested in politics and marries a woman who he believes will help him gain votes and …show more content…
Robertson Davies uses the relationships of characters in the novel to help shape their self-knowledge. Following the events of Leola’s failed suicide attempt, after she found out how unfaithful Boy has been to her, Dunstan describes that “Poor Leola had become more and more listless since the outbreak of war; as Boy grew in importance and his remarkable abilities became increasingly manifest, she faded… Leola had no public life and wanted none” (Davies). Leola discerns that her life is nothing without Boy, she has no self worth, she has no public life, her entire existence has been centered around Boy. The worst part about the relationship is that Boy has almost no feelings for her and finds her boring. She becomes so saddened and depressed by this fact of self-knowledge that when she catches pneumonia, Dunstan states “... Leola opened her windows one afternoon, when the nurse had closed them, and took a chill, and was dead in less than a week” (Davies). After knowing that there is no substance in her life, Leola finds no will to live and arguably commits suicide, or at the very least, sped up her inevitable death. “But you - there is a whole great piece of your life that is unlived, denied, set aside… You must get to know your personal devil… I think you are fifth business” (Davies). Liesl challenges Dunstan to embrace his inner potential and dark
Having a best friend is something that every person requires. They can help you out when in trouble or to cheer you up when feeling sad. Best friends don 't have to be perfect becuase of of them aren 't. However, Rudy was Liesel 's perfect best friend. In "The Book Theif", by Marcus Zusak, Liesel and Rudy start off with a hesitant friendship that later emerge into a strong connection.
In the book, “The Watsons Go to Birmingham’’ written by Paul Curtis there are two brothers one named Kenny and the other is named Byron. There are major personality differences between the boys including the way they treat other people. Kenny is a gracious and generous person who cares about people’s feelings. Byron is a bully that enjoys picking on people and beating them up.
Lastly Diana influences Dunstable to begin a new life. To begin with Liesl acts as dunstables person devil and influences him to be more cautious with people. On one encounter with Liesel she entices him to let his own inner evil out. “You should take a look at this side of your life you have not lived. Now don’t wriggle and snuffle and try to protest.
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.” ~Plato. In The Chosen by Chaim Potok, every character fights their own battle, whether large or small. Few characters in this novel show compassion towards other ’s suffering with more difficult struggles.
Forgiving and trying to relieve each other’s guilt is friendship. Recognizing an accident due to paranoia is also part of friendship. You might be scared to tell your friend the truth, but your best friend should always forgive you. In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, we see a strong friendship weaken due to one accident.
The Qualities of a Scholar In Chaim Potok’s The Chosen, many great characters exist. The book covers Jewish life across different branches of the religion in America. The characters in this book all face their own challenges, and often times encounter them together. The main protagonist, Reuven Malter, stands out from the other characters in the book because of his success as a student.
Character Analysis: “The Most Dangerous Game” The main reason I chose the antagonist in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is that there is a lot of bad features about General Zaroff, which I want to figure out. I‘m studying three traits about General Zaroff, the three traits I picked are Heartless, Smart, and unfair. “The Most Dangerous Game” is about a Russian hunter, who got bored with hunting animals. One trait is heartless because General Zaroff didn’t care for Ivan, and he treated Ivan like he was an object to be used.
In August Wilson’s The PIano Lesson , Boy Willie, struggles with controlling his anger towards his family past slave owner family, the sutters, generations before he was born which reveals to accept your past and and do not attempt to get revenge or it’ll consume you and take over your life in dangerous ways. Throughout the whole novel we can see how angry and eager he is to sell the piano and his hatred towards his family’s ex owners family especially the last one to die which is why he had traveled to the north from Mississippi to Pittsburgh where his sister Bernice lives and the current location of the symbolic family piano. Throughout the whole play Boy Willie is on a mission. He is attempting to sell his family’s piano in order to buy land and make a living out of the land.
“Intelligence is closely associated with formal education- the type of schooling a person has, how much and how long- and most people seem to move comfortably from that notion to a belief that work requiring less schooling requires less intelligence” (Rose). What Rose is trying to infer is that just because you are labeled blue collar: meaning you have to earn your income from manual labor, and have lack of educational knowledge, does not mean you cannot earn the knowledge in your work career. There are many opportunities to learn from your job even if you are less experienced. “...One who is so intelligent about so many things in life seems unable to apply that intelligence to academic work.
In the novel, The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. Kenny wonders why his brother treats other people so mean. Kenny does treat people better. I will write about how Kenny treats other people better. For starters, when Kenny is in lunch and Rufus sits next to him, he shares his meal when he notices Rufus does not have any food.
In the novel, The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenny wonders why his brother Byron is so mean to people. Kenny does not treat others better than Byron because he laughed at Rufus and Cody, he was teasing Byron when his lips got stuck to the mirror, and he was complaining when he had to take off his little sister’s winter clothes at school. On page 43, when Larry Dunn makes fun of Rufus and Cody, Kenny laughs at them, too. A true friend could have stood up for Rufus and Cody.
“I was contrite and guilty, for I knew that the snowball had been meant for me” (Davies 11). Dunstan Ramsay from Robertson Davies’ Fifth Business is a man who bears the responsibility of dodging a snowball throughout his life. He believes that he caused the insanity of his neighbour, Mary Dempster by letting that snowball hit her. Therefore, the guilt he experiences will ultimately influences his development into an adult. This is especially apparent in his involvement with Mary, his detached attitude towards society, and his opinion towards his parents.
In the novel, Ordinary People by Judith Guest, a family goes through the trials of trying to find normalcy after a tragedy strikes. Throughout the story you meet the Jarret family and watch as they progress through the everyday life and the challenges that come with it. Conrad Jarret is an ordinary 17-year-old boy living in Lake Forest, Illinois. Conrad is living with the burden of thinking he is at fault for his brother’s death and blaming himself for the family quandary’s. Conrad, by far, is the most interesting character for the reason that he unquestionably struggles to try to find what he defines as a “normal” life.
