The metaphor that compares Hamlet to the pigeon reveals Hamlet’s true nature. Pigeons do not have gallbladders: the body’s center for courage. By comparing himself to a “pigeon-livered and lack gall” (Ham.2.2.604), Hamlet acknowledges his submissiveness and resentment towards cold, heartless acts; it is against his nature to commit murder. This realization serves as an explanation as to why Hamlet has not fulfilled his pledge to the ghost. The bird imagery continues as Hamlet states he would feed Claudius to “kites” (Ham.2.2.606); he is conflicted about what he should do. Claudius is then compared to the internal organs of slaves and a man without morals, remorse or kindness (Ham.2.2.607-608). The powerful metaphors and adjectives used to describe Claudius not only express Hamlet’s intense contempt and disdain towards him, but also serve to convince Hamlet to commit murder. However, Hamlet depicts himself as a whore, a prostitute, and a swearing kitchen maid (Ham.2.2.614-616), reiterating the notion that he is worthless, as well as weak for expressing his emotions through words rather than actions. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Hamlet struggles to cope with his late father’s death and his mother’s quick marriage. In Act 1, Scene 2, King Claudius, Queen Gertrude, and Hamlet are all introduced. Hamlet has just finished publicly speaking with his mom and the new king, and after he is interrupted by his good friend Horatio, who reveal the secret about King Hamlet’s ghost. Hamlet’s soliloquy is particularly crucial because it serves as his initial characterization, revealing the causes of his anguish. Hamlet’s grief is apparent to the audience, as he begins lamenting about the uselessness of life.

The play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, is about a young prince who lost his father and has many issues dealing with his sanity and his family. Hamlet is not crazy because he says he is faking it, he may have severe depression, and he wants to avenge his father. Hamlet is faking being insane for his own sake.
The main goal of the ghost speech is for King Hamlet to convince young Hamlet to avenge his death by killing Claudius. He does so by using figurative language such as foreshadowing, motifs, and allusions. He tries to convince Hamlet by telling him how Claudius killed, and robbed him “of crown” and “queen”. The King turns Hamlet against Claudius when he tells him exactly how he was killed. His references to the being killed by his brother alludes to the story of Cain and Abel in the Bible.
In this soliloquy, Hamlet’s tone changes from being frustrated and irritated to sure, powerful, and bloodthirsty. Hamlet begins speaking in a frustrated manner, beating himself up that although there is so much around him that should motivate him to take revenge against his uncle, he has not. Shakespeare’s diction, such as “dull” (4.4.35) and “beast” (4.4.37) show Hamlet’s disgust with only living like an animal, just sleeping and eating. Hamlet is frustrated since he has been lazy, which was not God’s intention. He cannot even fight for a worthy cause dear to his heart, but Fortinbras’ men die for a meaningless reason.
1) In Hamlet, pouring poison in a person’s ear had both a literal and symbolic significance. The literal meaning is that they are telling lies to people in order to deceive them. They are pouring poison or “poisonous” words into that person’s ear. The symbolic meaning of pouring poison in a person’s ear can be associated with the symbolic meaning of the snake in the story of Adam and Eve where the snake lures Eve in through lies. The characters in Hamlet were misled in the same way because they had poison poured into their ears.
Shakespeare’s use of language helps to portray the major theme of deception in the play Hamlet. The utilization of diction helps to equate Claudius to an evil person, while metaphors help to make the comparison between Claudius and a deathly animal. In Act II Scene 2, as Hamlet berates himself for his irresoluteness and cowardice and contemplates vengeance for his father, the concluding soliloquy vividly portrays Hamlet’s transition from irritation to insanity. Shakespeare extensively utilizes analogies and carefully chosen diction and syntax to dramatize the state of uneasiness in Hamlet’s conflicted mind. Shakespeare makes both direct and indirect comparisons and contrasts throughout the soliloquy. For instance, Hamlet’s remarks about the player makes a clear illustration of their subtle similarities and differences to the readers. The imaginary situation in which the player had Hamlet’s “motive and cue for passion” demonstrates that the player, who would be able to “make mad the guilty and appall the free,” is not only keen on, but also subliminally excellent at the art of acting (II.2.520-524).
In Act III of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, King Claudius confesses to the murder of his brother. Riddled with rhetorical devices, the soliloquy follows Claudius’ emotional journey through intense guilt, internal conflict and urgent prayer. All of these devices imply and highlight his moral confusion as he attempts to achieve salvation. Whether it is through an allusion, rhetorical question, metaphor, simile, synecdoche, or imagery, Shakespeare utilizes rhetorical devices to underscore Claudius’ hesitancy and cowardice. Through a biblical allusion and an antithetical metaphor, Shakespeare characterizes Claudius’ confession as dramatic and regretful, but also reveals the king’s hope for an unburdened conscience.
This amorality stems from his desire to avenge the “rank and gross[ly]” (Shakespeare, 29) cruel actions of his uncle, the King Claudius. In the end however, both Hamlet and Claudius die with little pomp, victims of each other in a cyclical stream of karma. Shakespeare uses this eventuality to denounce the use of cruelty as a means to an end, for it brings nought but meaningless death. The fact that Hamlet becomes so cruel specifically because of Claudius’ treachery is a testament to the relationship between oppressor and oppressed. As Hamlet becomes that which he once hated, Shakespeare emphasizes the fact that the line between victim and oppressor is often more blurred than defined.
Throughout the play, Hamlet is forced to make difficult decisions; as he is conflicted with almost every decision he makes, his uncertainty and unsophisticated thoughts will eventually lead to his downfall. Man vs. Self is a common theme in Shakespeare’s work, and Hamlet is no exception. The most distinct example of this sophisticated concept is Hamlet himself. When analyzed thoroughly, Hamlet is his greatest obstacle and enemy. The earliest of his internal conflicts is when his mother married his uncle, Claudius, in such a short window of time after his father’s death.
However, in the eyes of a modern audience, Hamlet would not be considered a coward because of our deeper, more enlightened understanding of the underpinning reasons for his hesitation through our values and beliefs. Hamlet perceives himself as a coward for many reasons however after in-depth analysis, it is concluded that his self-accusation is incorrect. Hamlet considers himself a coward due to his hamartia; his constant scrutiny and contemplation of the idea of killing Claudius, his uncle causing him not to take action. In Act 2 Scene 2, Shakespeare uses a soliloquy to let the audience have an insight into what Hamlet is thinking, to create sympathy for him and to bring about the development of Anagnorisis within the play. After watching a player acting the role of Hecuba crying on stage while performing the story of Pyrrhus, he wonders at the player’s ability to weep for a fictional character and asks himself, ‘Am I coward?’
The character of Hamlet is expressed as a protagonist. His irritated attitude towards Claudius in scene 2 of act 1 leaves the audience with a clear first impression of his nature. He is deceitful of the king, his uncle Claudius who is now the ruler of Denmark after his brothers “death”, and disgusted of his mother marrying his uncle. Hamlet is an example of someone who has compromised his happiness, in order to avenge his father’s murder.
In Hamlet's soliloquy in act 1 scene 2 of Hamlet by Shakespeare, the central idea is that life is not fair. This is first shown as the central idea when Hamlet says that he wants to commit suicide, but it is against his religion (lines 129-132). To him, life seems unfair because when he wants to do something, he is not allowed to. The central idea is further shown when Hamlet says that his father loved his mother so much "that he might not [allow] the winds of heaven [to] / visit her face too roughly" (lines 141-142), and his mother "would hand on him as if [an] increase of appetite had grown / by what it fed on" (lines 143-145), and his father dies (lines 148). Soon after, she remarries.
Hamlet’s hesitant nature is well presented in the play. For one, Hamlet cannot bring forth the strength to end his own life; his indecision of whether or not to commit suicide plagues him for more than half the play.
In William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, the themes vary from conditional and unconditional love, deception, honour, power and ambition and lastly poison. But the most significant theme is loyalty and betrayal. This theme ties all the other themes together. The theme loyalty and betrayal both have major effects on each other. Through the different actions of characters and what they say to one another, is where the audience discovers whether or not they are loyal or disloyal.
