After being separated from his mother at a young age, Frederick Douglass fights back against slavery and human rights. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, the author, Frederick Douglass, uses powerful rhetoric to disprove the Pragmatic and the Scientific pro-slavery arguments of Pre-Civil War America. The Pragmatic Argument is about how many people believe that if all black slaves were to be freed, then this would result in convulsions which would then lead to extermination of the one or other race. Many people also believed that black slavery was necessary for American history. Douglass disproves this argument in many ways. For example, one way is when Douglass is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Auld, and they teach Douglass how to read, “Very soon after I went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Auld, she very kindly commenced to teach me the A, B, C” (40). Douglass at this point uses diction to show him being rebellious, and has disobeyed one of the “rules” of slaves, the inability to read and write. For example, they thought the negroes were much less educated and fortunate compared to the whites, which is why the negroes had the jobs of being slaves. Douglass proves that all black and white people should be treated equally, no matter which race you are. Douglass disproves this theory, by fighting back against Mr. Covey. “This battle with Mr. Covey was the turning-point in my career as a slave” (69). Douglass’s actions of fighting back against Mr. Covey set the tone of vindictive, disproved that all negroes should be ruled by their white masters. Lincoln Douglas Debates Rated as a worthy antagonist Douglas was that very antagonist for Lincoln during 1854-1861 (Johannsen, 1989). Many do not know that the debates were part of a larger campaign. These debates were designed to acheive cetain political abjectives, and these debates reflected of the politcal rhetoric of the time (History.com Staff, 2009). Douglas was in the Democratic Party where Lincoln was in the Republican Party, so you can imagine that their opinions differed greatly. They differed in not just opinion but political standing, their actual looks, and how they advanced up the political ladder so to speak.
The disrepect that Douglass was constantly shown took its toll on him, and he eventually snapped. Douglass “resolved to fight” because he was tired of being treated like property (43). No one can put themselves in the shoes of slave and understand the abuse they constantly went through, but we can all imagine that it would get old at some point. Douglass’ actions deserves praise because not many slaves had the guts and willingness to say no to their master, let alone lay a hand on them. Douglass said he fought Covey because he decided “to be used no longer” (44).

Douglass argues that slavery has a horrible effect and it is a bad thing. One piece of evidence is when in excerpt 3 paragraph 3 the text states that ¨Mr. Covey gave us enough to eat, but scarce time to eat it.¨ Another piece of evidence is in excerpt 4 paragraph 12 ¨Causing blood to run where I touched him with the ends of my fingers.¨ This shows that slavery is a thing that can cause pain and has a horrible effect on slaves. This disproves people who believed that was a good thing because this shows that someone can get hurt when they are enslaved.
