The first source which will be evaluated in depth is Eric Foner’s book “Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men: The Ideology of the Republican Party before the Civil War” which was published in oxford in 1995. The purpose of this book is to analyze the civil war and evaluate the ideas of the early Republican Party. The author talks about how “free soil, free labor, free men” did not really apply for most Americans, and especially not blacks.
