What Caused the Great Depression?
The Great Depression was a devastating tragedy that changed our economy. In the U.S, the Great Depression shortly happened after the stock market crash in 1929. This sent Wall Street into a great panic and wiped out millions of investors. Over the years, consumer spending and investments decreased. This caused declines in industrial output and raised unemployment as failing companies laid off workers. By 1933, 13 to 15 million Americans were unemployed and half the country’s banks had failed. However, the economy did not fully turn around until after 1939 during World War II. For example, In Document five it states that in 1929, a collapse of the American Prosperity happen. Which means people was putting a lot of their money into securities hoping to the make the stocks rise. People began gambling which made a lot of them go into debt (Harry J. Carman and Harold C. Syrett, A History of the American People, 1952). Also a lot of people were speculating, meaning investors was putting money towards stocks hoping to gain, but risking a loss. By 1931, six million Americans could not find work. Industrial production dropped by half, breadlines, soup kitchens, and the homeless shelters became popular in America’s town and cities. In Document six, it explains how consumers have to reduce purchases and cut back on spending habits and how farmers struggled not being able to afford to harvest their crops( William E. Leuchtenburg, The Perils of Prosperity, 1914-1932, 1958). The overproduction of goods is caused by products not being brought, businesses not cutting back on making products, businesses laid off workers, and unemployment. For example, if someone is unemployed than he or she cannot buy products that were being produced. If nothing is being brought than businesses had to lay off workers. Since people were getting laid off family income was getting lower and lower. According to Document one, banks panics began when investors demanded their deposits in cash (AmeriTrust Co. Cleveland). This swept throughout the U.S and by early 1933 thousands of banks closed. The Great Depression occurred after the stock market crash in 1929, but lasted for years after, until 1940. One reason the crash occurred was because banks were failing. Banks were lending out money to anyone even if those people did not have good credit. Another reason was that productivity of products were high, but the demand for those products decreased. Since people were not buying, companies were losing money, which led to lay-offs.

Three of the main causes to The Great Depression involved the crash of the stock market, job loss and buying on credit. To begin with, the crash of the stock market was the starting factor that let to the downfall of many lives. The stock market was flourishing with investors but reduced economy by 60% over all (Document 1). Around 4 million Americans including many banks had invested large amounts of money in stocks hoping to earn gains (Document 3).
Since the money was tied to gold reserve, and the amount of this metal was limited, there occurred a shortage of money, and hence the shortage of effective demand for goods and services. Further, in the chain reaction: a sharp drop in prices for goods (deflation), bankruptcy of enterprises, unemployment, protective duties on imported goods, fall of consumer demand, and a sharp drop in living standards. before the beginning of the Great Depression the rate of the U.S. gold reserve growth was slower than the development of economy. This led to the emergence of hidden inflation, as the government printed new money for the rapid growth of the economy. Thus, as Edsforth states the dollar’s gold supply was undermined, the budget deficit grew, and the Federal Reserve System lowered the discount rate.

It all started on morning day in the early 1930 when soon people looked worried about their jobs because factories were going to unemployment workers. Which was not a great thing for the the people or the factories because if the workers were unemployment they would not have money to the buy the products from the stores. So at the end the great depression had a major impact on the United states. The reason was because many men had to have at least two different jobs in order for them to bring food for his family.

On October 29th 1929, the United States of America fell into an all consuming state of fear. The crash of the stock market and the economic tribulations that rural United Statians were facing resulted in the Great Depression. No matter where one would he or she would encounter a plague of despair and people looking for the same jobs that no longer existed. People left their homes hungry for opportunities but would end up with starving for not only a small sum or money but a morsel of food as well.
The exciting and prosperous decade of the 1920s suddenly ended when the world faced a severe economic crisis known as the Great Depression. Most men were unaware of the upcoming crash of the economy and were left penniless. What led up to this catastrophe that not only affected our country but the world, globally? After the 1920’s many people began thinking they could get rich easily by buying stocks. This was the beginning of many unexpected problems such as stock market speculation, the failure of many banks, and the problem of overproduction and underconsumption.
There were many factors that led up to the depression. First of all, banks were making loans that were never paid back. When the businesses that loans were made to ran short on money, similarly, the banks did too. Banks across America went bankrupt, causing them to close. Every account in the banks that closed was abandoned.
During the Great Depression the unemployment rate went up, they were forced to eat at soup kitchens or go through garbage cans for food, and they even had to build shelter out of cardboard. The first underlying cause of the Great Depression was underconsumption and overproduction. Many things contributed to the underconsumption of goods. The production line kept producing goods even when people could not afford to buy them.
There were a variety of causes that caused the Great Depression, but the main cause that started it was a decrease in spending. This led to production decrease because manufacturers and merchandisers did not want to have unused items just sitting on the shelves. In October of 1929 the stock market crashed. The United States stock prices had reached levels that could not be justified by sensible predictions of future earnings. The results of this were catastrophic.
The confidence of Wall Street was destroyed in there Street markets to where it led the Great Depression. It also crashed when Herbert Hoover was the president during that time. Then, he created the “Hoover bull market” and it went high in there savings in there securities and profits. Billions of dollars were getting drawn from their banks to Wall Street for what was happening to their downfall of money. It was on that day were the real panic of the Great Depression was about to happen.
