The Trojan War plays a prominent part in Greek mythology. In classical sources the war began after the either elopement or abduction of Queen Helen of Sparta to/by the Trojan Prince Paris. Menelaus, the king of Sparta, convinced his brother Agamemnon (who was king of Mycenae) to head an “expedition” to retrieve his queen. The Greek heroes Achilles, Odysseus, Ajax and Nestor joined Agamemnon and his fleet of a thousand ships. The unit of soldiers, heroes and men were from multiple parts of the Hellenic world. They crossed the Aegean Sea to Asia Minor and sieged Troy, demanding Helen’s return by Priam, the Trojan king.
