Gun control is in the forefront of the national new stemming from the mass shootings at schools and public places across the United States. Concerns have been raised both by the public and our nation’s government about gun violence and creating more strict legislation. One of the measures looked at is the use of smart technologies to make guns safer. This call for smart technologies to be incorporated into firearms has a lack of consensus on both sides of the gun control issue making smart technologies a slowly researched and developed area. For this reason, smart gun technologies should not be incorporated into gun control legislation. There are a number of technologies and measures that have been used to incorporate safety devices into firearms. In 1997 pressure was put on the gun manufacturers by the Clinton administration and congress. In 1996 the National Institute of Justice published a research report, A Review of Gun Safety Technologies, that examined existing and emerging safety technologies for firearms. In the report Greene states “the addition of a smart gun technology must not significantly reduce the reliability of the firearm system compared to existing firearms” (22). One of the inherent problems with reliability is the subjective term in regards to expectations. Everyone’s expectations are different no one can agree on how to define, test or verify reliability.
