Toby Crabtree AICE student number: 2567 Center US015 Word count: 1856 Does gun ownership make society safer? Humanity has been using guns for decades now. Guns have been utilized for many reasons. Hunters use guns to bring home food to keep their families from starving. Soldiers use guns to protect their country and those that live there. Police officers use guns to enforce the law and to protect civilians against anyone who may want to harm them. Everyday people may even use guns to protect themselves from criminals who attack those they feel would make an easy target. Some people use guns for recreation and only fire them at target ranges simply for fun. However, guns can be used in much more sinister ways as well. Gun ownership is …show more content…
Ryan McMaken writes about how gun control is not the proper way to deal with gun control in his article “Gun Control Fails: What Happened in England, Ireland, and Canada.” McMaken writes both about how the homicide rates between countries may be askew and about how gun control has failed to affect crime rates in countries that strictly enforce it. McMaken writes about how different countries track homicide rates and how these different collection rates skew the results and if all the countries collected these numbers in the same way the comparisons would be much different. McMaken states, “there is always a fundamental problem with comparing different countries that may employ different methods of collecting data on homicides and processing the data” (McMaken 2). McMaken goes on to explain what the homicide rate would look like in the United States if it were collected in the same way that other countries did. “In 2012, the US murder rate was 4.7 per 100,000... Using only people who were arrested (not just convicted) would lower the US murder rate to 2.26 per 100,000.” (McMaken 4) In this same article McMaken talks about another issue, gun control, McMaken claims that it doesn’t work. McMaken shows several graphs and charts representing the homicide rates of different countries through the years and he marks on the graphs when certain gun laws were enacted or disbanded. The first countries McMaken talks about are England and Wales. McMaken shines some light on the gun laws in England by saying, “The United Kingdom is often held up as evidence of the effectiveness of gun control. After all, since 1920, the UK has experienced increasingly restrictive gun control, leading up to an almost-total ban on handguns, and even many shotguns.” (McMaken 10) McMaken follows up this statement with a shocking fact, “And yet, the homicide rate increased for years after gun confiscation was put into
Even though gun violence has always plagued humanity, authorities still fail to remove the dangerous equipment at hand. Of course, in the article “The solution to gun violence is clear” published in December 12, 2012, issue of The Washington post, opinionated writer Fareed Zakaria makes his claim on why guns should be banned in the United States. Although this is an interesting subject Zakaria is not very authoritative on his claim. He argues that there are too many guns, too easy to obtain, and the country’s “permissive laws” are making it worst for Americans. Zakaria writes about how much of a better difference the lack of access to guns, have in other countries to make his point.
During the late 1990’s and early 2000’s murder rate was considerably increased with stricter laws regarding firearms. In central Russia, where handguns were banned, the murder rate was about 10 times more than Finland, where handguns were legal. Not only was the murder rate 10 times more than in Finland, but it was about 25 times more than Norway, where handguns were legal [3]. This is just one example of how guns can reduce murder rate. Another example is “Vermont: one of the safest five states in the country.
Gun Control in the United States Does Gun Control work? ,and if it does work,Does gun control have to be necessary? For those who are unaware gun control refers to laws or policies that regulate manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, and/or the use of firearms. According to CNN 67% of americans support gun control, when research has shown that states with stricter gun control laws have significantly higher homicide rates compared to those of states with lenient gun control laws. When talking about gun control and looking at the homicide rates of states with lenient and strict gun control laws one will realize that gun control does not work. However there are many solutions to lowering the homicide rates in states with high homicide
For violent crimes (assault, robbery and rape) guns were used 0.83% of the time in self-defense. In 20% of the self defense incidents, the guns were used by police
A stronger focus on gun control in the United States involving restriction or even an outright ban of guns could serve to help the problem greatly. In 2015, 13,286 people were killed by firearms in the United States, with 26,819 suffering from non-lethal injuries (qtd. in “Guns in the US”). Taking away guns, the means that many urban criminals have to commit their crimes, would be very beneficial to cities. Recent studies found that the most effective way of reducing gun crime is to lower the amount of guns available in circulation.
Gun Control Gun control is one of the most talked about issues in America with the many mass shootings in the past years. People are scared and worried for themselves and their families, most of these people want guns to be banned or at least restricted. While the other part of Americans believe that guns are not the issue and feel that banning them would go against their constitution right to bear arms. As of 2013 an estimated 270 million total guns are registered to people in the United States.
A gun is made to be used at its full capability. Weapons are used also for protection over your family,(“A ban on assault weapons would not reduce crime”) also said, “ California 's murder rate increased every year for five years, twenty-six percent total. That is a perfect example of why some people feel the need to keep a gun or firearm in their homes, they are aware of the murder rate due to the media. People do not want to take a chance on someone hurting them so they feel the need to have one, witch is understandable because the murder rate has raised in the last 5 years there. You don’t want your firearm to not be able to be used to its maximum strength at a time if someone was to try to harm you, you would want it to be able to be used at its maximum strength to be able to protect you from harm.
‘’Guns are responsible for over thirty-three thousand deaths in the United States annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).. In 2014, the CDC reported that 11,008 of the 15,872 homicides committed in the United States that year involved a firearm. Of the 42,826 suicides reported that year, 21,386 involved a firearm. These statistics have inspired efforts at the federal and state levels to enact gun control legislation to reduce crime and violence’’(‘’Gun Control’’). According to the statistic guns are held for over 33,000 deaths in the United States.
Although firearms are still highly debated as dangerous or, it has been proved many times that because of guns, the number of crimes have been reduced; plus having these firearms create a sense of safety and
Attention Getter: Between 1993 and 2003 gun ownership increased by 56 percent, and yet gun violence declined by almost 50 percent (Bandler). Criminals know that if people have guns to protect themselves then they might not be successful in a shooting. Gun Regulation is immoral because Guns are not what kill people. It is the people who use the guns to kill people, who kill people. Many of these people who cause these mass shooting and killings have mental health issues.
On the issue of gun control, I had always thought along the lines of opposing or supporting the issue but had never thought that there could be another argument different from these two main ones that could be discussed. It was therefore quite refreshing to look at the issue from Novak’s point of view. The fact that he provided evidence to support his claim that law enforcement has worked before in reducing gun violence cases made his article all the more interesting and believable. He shows that the debate on gun control may just have been pointless all this time as the issue that should be discussed is really not whether people should have guns or not but rather how to enforce the law to ensure that perpetrators of gun violence are
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.
Moorhouse, John C, and Brent Wanner. “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control?” Ebscohost, 1 Jan. 2006, web.a.ebscohost.com/ehost/pdfviewer/ pdfviewer?vid=1&sid=db378b8b-d9e7-4ee7-b26c-460bc1177bd4%40sessionmgr4008. Moorhouse and Wanner, in their article “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control”, studied whether or not gun control reduced gun violence in individual states. The overarching theme throughout the individual states is that gun control doesn’t reduce gun violence and is very ineffective.
They found that these gun laws were very ineffective at reducing gun violence; they also suggest focusing on why gun laws are ineffective
