With the rise of school shootings, one would be quick to assume that restricting ownership of firearms would solve the problem. However, the issue stems further than just guns. The tragedy at Virginia Tech may reveal to us something about how a young man could be compelled to commit shocking actions, but it does not advise us very much about gun control. Recently, not many distinguished Americans have tried to use the college massacres as an argument for gun control. A logic for this is that we are in a middle of a presidential race in which popular Republican candidates are mindful that advocating gun control can earn them votes. Conservative gun advocate, Robert Levy, discusses that stricter gun control laws is not the solution for a safer …show more content…
No gun control law has halted Robert L. Dear Jr. from supposedly murdering three people in Colorado. There is only one method to prevent murderers from murdering: Place them where they cannot earn access to a gun, knife, explosives, car or any alternative lethal weapon. Put them in prison or a secure mental institution. How do we recognize whom to lock up, when and for how long? That is a question deserving of deliberation and due process. Assuredly, lawbreakers who carry out violent offenses should not relish “revolving door” justice. Jack Hunter, author of How Gun Control Kills, lists various examples of “undoubtedly and dangerously psychotic individuals, such as Newtown killer Adam Lanza and Aurora shooter James Holmes, who should have been institutionalized” (Hunter 2012) proving that it is not the gun’s fault for injuring an individual but the person’s mentality. But there will constantly be people who fall through the cracks. There will consistently be corrupt men among us. Truth be told, they vision gun control laws with the same disregard that they outlook laws against murder. The argument that more or better gun control will hinder some killers avoids the fact that these standards make it difficult for law-abiding Americans to practice their original, domestic and constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. …show more content…
By limiting the freedom to own guns with measures like the Undetectable Firearms Act or the unsuccessful Assault Weapons Ban of 2013, our 2nd Amendment rights become increasingly at risk from being taken away. The solution is not in restrictions on gun ownership, but the education that comes with gun ownership. The government should consider the prospect of providing gun safety training to congress as an alternative to gun control. The National Rifle Association did a study on gun violence. They conclude that “gun safety has proven to be effective against gun homicide” (NRA 2013). By educating the public, gun responsibility and safety will increase and lower gun crime without compromising gun ownership. Implementing mandatory gun safety courses for first time buyers and a safety test for current owners, Americans can buy guns and also be educated in the responsibility that comes with gun ownership. This measure could potentially save local governments money as well since law enforcement would not need to spend time prosecuting gun violators due to negligence. In addition, gun education would also reform the way people think of guns, from the stereotypical gun toting violent individual to the educated, informed gun owner. The answer is not to limit our freedom, but to educate the responsibilities
Conservative gun-rights advocates should acknowledge that if more states had a stringent universal background check, or if a federal law put these in place, more guns would be kept out of the hands of criminals and the mentally unstable (Goldberg). Even though Americans who are qualified to possess firearms shouldn't be denied the right to participate in their own defense. Guns can be used to do evil, but guns can also be used to do good (Goldberg). It’s important that people know this concept and how guns should be
According to Gun Violence Archive (GVA) “as of today there is a total of 27,645 of gun incidents in the United States, of this total, 7,151 are deaths, 14,749 injuries, 319 are children between the ages of 0 to 11 years old, 1,551 are teens between the ages of 12 to 17, 179 of this incidents correspond to a number of mass shootings, 171 are officers that were either killed or injured, 960 were individuals involved with crime, 1,160 due to home invasion, only 849 are use in defense and 1,179 correspond to accidental” (Gun Violence Archive, 1). Due to high numbers on statistics regarding gun violence a lot of people wonder if by giving the right to people to keep arms is keeping them safe or turning them into a menace to society. Some people believe that gun control will not deter crime and it will prevent citizens from protecting themselves. However, some other individuals believe that gun control will reduce gun
Within American ideals, laws, and opinions concerning gun control, firearms continue to be a critical matter in the government, schools, and communities. Notably, the nation 's government has attempted, and or passed, laws that inhibit guns in some kind of way. Now, generally the issue of gun control is viewed differently by either political parties; liberal Democrats tend to sway towards the side that is in favor of gun control laws, while Conservative Republicans have opposing views about these ideas. Therefore, since our nation is executively governed by Barack Obama, a democrat, the concern around firearm laws have intensified over the past eight years he has been in office.
One of the most talked about topics in the United States today deals with Second Amendment Rights, especially as it relates to gun control. Just because guns are known by some people as a dangerous entity, they could also save the American people from danger. In light of the Sandy Hook incident, it begs the question: would teachers carrying firearms have helped? Ultimately, concealed weapons would have saved more lives than it took that particular day. The Second Amendment has “focused on whether it protects the right of individuals to keep and bear arms, or a right that can be exercised only through militia organization like the National Guard” (Lund and Winkler 1).
Everyone wants a safer community to live in, and keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people is the number one goal. The policies that have been proposed to accomplish this have been diverse and debated. Two sides have formed on a specific procedure to lower the gun violence: those who want age restrictions on guns to keep them out of the hands of the younger generation
Roger McGrath and Warren Burger provide different perspectives on the continuing debate over gun regulation in the United States. Although these authors establish opposing conclusions, both understand that gun related crimes are becoming increasingly common and therefore pose a threat to the domestic tranquility of the nation. Their controversy is centered around whether or not increased gun restrictions will lower criminal activity. McGrath, in his article “A God-Given Natural Right”, argues that increased gun control will only disarm law abiding citizens leaving them defenseless therefore providing incentives for criminals to break the law. However, Burger’s emphasis on the unrestricted distribution of firearms in his article “The Right to
On, February 14, 2018, a mass school shooting in Florida got the nation’s attention, however, gun violence has always been an issue, and it is only getting worse. Now people are saying there needs to be something done, and there are many that agree. Starting off there should be stricter gun laws, because in today’s world it is too easy to get handguns and assault rifles. With, the capabilities a firearm holds, such as taking people’s lives there must be stricter restrictions that could help cut down the gun violence and save lives. Increasing the age of purchasing a firearm would be one step.
Gun Control Debate Jake Novak, in an article for CNBC titled, “Gun control isn’t the answer. We already know how to stop the violence,” gives his opinion regarding the controversial issue of gun control. Novak argues that gun control is not the answer to rising gun violence but that proper enforcement of the law would go a long way in reducing the cases of gun violence in America. He states, “We actually solved the issue of rising gun violence in America in the mid-1990’s and again in the early 2000’s by doing something radical. We enforced the law” (Novak 28).
Gun control has been a controversial issue for years and numerous solutions have been proposed and enacted. The debate sparked after tragic civilian attacks, like school shootings. An example, is the tragedy in 1999 at Columbine High School. Two teens attacked the school, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before killing themselves. Following this attack, numerous solutions have been argued and purposed.
In today’s society, one of the most alienating issues in American politics is gun control. More specifically, the issue is whether or not guns should be banned in the United States. Some people would say that guns should be banned because it would reduce crime as a whole and keep citizens safer. These people, enthusiasts of stricter gun laws, fear being safe in their country where there are so many people who have access to guns. Opponents of this argument, however, also fear losing safety.
Alexis Clarke Professor Frank English 110 29 October 2015 Gun Control Will Not Eliminate Crime The big issue of gun control in the United States, is that many people believe that it takes away the 2nd Amendment rights, which is the right to bear arms. Citizens of the United States are promised the the right to bear arms in the Constitution, and by applying gun control laws takes away that same right. Crime is high enough in cities with very few laws pertaining to gun control, but taking guns away from people who are registered with license will not solve the problem either. Placing more limitations on gun owners, particularly responsible gun owners, will not reduce gun violence.
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
This paper also provides an interesting solution to gun violence; instead of already proven ineffective gun control laws, these authors suggest looking at why these laws are ineffective. Planty, Michael, and Jennifer
Introduction Locked and unloaded; one teeny phrase has the potential to save hundreds of lives. Gun safety education classes being mandatory for all gun owners and family members was not a topic discussed throughout my research. It is essential to address gun safety because it is a right of US citizens to carry a gun and they can become very dangerous and fatal if not handled or stored properly. This can be improved by promoting gun safety education classes and making them mandatory for gun owners, including their family members. Children need to know the difference if they see a real gun how to distinguish it as different from their toys.
Everyday in the United States, ninety families are changed forever; guns claim an average of ninety lives every day in the United States, 33,000 lives in a single year. Gun control has been a debate in the United States for many years and is constantly thrusted back into the public’s attention by horrific shootings. These shootings constantly cause individuals to petition the government to place stricter and stricter regulations of guns. However, these policies cannot be the solution to this problem. To determine a solution that will be both effective and constitutional, we must look at statistics and research that has been conducted to determine the best course of action.
