Today I will be talking about the holiday we call Halloween. Halloween is where we all dress up in costumes and get candy from houses on the thirty first of October. Here are three things about halloween. First, I am going to be talking the history of halloween.
To better understand the history of the two holidays, we should look at where it all first began. An ancient Celtic festival of Samhain about 2,000 years ago was when Halloween was first created. This celebration took place on October 31st and it marked the end of summer, the harvest and the beginning of winter. During this time, winter resembled a cold and dark time which was often
Today I am honored to be standing here presenting the Conn Smythe trophy to my friend Duncan Keith. The Conn Smythe is awarded to the most valuable player during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I first heard of this tremendous defensemen back in the 2009-10 season where he helped prevail the Chicago Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup victory since 1961. It seems like Duncan never has a bad season and makes very few mistakes on the ice. The amount of time he puts into this game really shows his dedication and love for hockey.
The holiday is still most commonly celebrated throughout Mexico and Latin America. Halloween is on October 31st, and it is celebrated by carving jack o’ lanterns, going trick or treating, decorating houses with a spooky theme, watching horror
Many kids pick out what they want to people for Halloween. This can be anything, such as Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games to a vampire or zombie. All of these things make the holidays similar, but they aren’t the same. These next things make Halloween and Dia de los Muertos different. Halloween originated from Ireland and Dia de los Muertos originated from Mexico.
Halloween On October 31 every year we celebrate a holiday known as Halloween. Celebrating consists of traditional activities such as: trick-or-treating, haunted houses, dressing up as your favorite character, carving jack-o-lanterns. There’s tons of fun stuff to do on Halloween, but there’s tons of history behind it as well. For starters, did you know that in Ohio, Massachusetts, and Iowa Trick-or-treating is referred to as Beggars Night?
Haunted houses are very important to the history of Halloween. If we didn’t have them it just wouldn’t be the same. They won’t be around for too long, but where did the tradition of haunted houses come from? Halloween is known as the season of fright and fear. One reason of the haunted houses were made is for scaring people and entertainment too.
Haunted houses are a thrilling tradition around the globe and they are incorporated into many families halloween traditions. Haunted houses have been around since the beginning of time, but just in different ways such as snake traps and spider infested treasure rooms. Little did the ancient egyptians and the romans know that they were starting a worldwide phenomenon that has never died for over 300 years! How is that?
Halloween is a time when many good and bad memories are created. I remember the importance of picking a costume when I was younger. I always wanted to be different and was afraid someone else would have the same costume. One year I found a cheap pirate costume at Walmart. I was excited to make my debut as a pirate when I saw three other girls had planned on wearing the same costume.
Houdini’s career started with the Needle Trick and the Challenge Act. His Needle Trick consisted of Houdini swallowing needles and thread and bringing them back up, all threaded. The Challenge Act was Houdini’s fame-making trick. He would put on a pair of handcuffs and he would be able to get out of them, without using a key. These two magic tricks helped form Houdini into the magician he turned into today.
Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican “ memorial day” that celebrates the lives of those who have passed. As a beautiful honor to this day, Mr. Garcia’s Spanish class, was given the task of making a little altar for either a family member or celebrity. Shadow boxes were made with pictures and decorations to represent the person; also posters with a background story were created. To show all the beautiful projects and honor each chosen person, a memorial was set up at the library displaying the student’s hard work. Besides our school, our community was ready to celebrate and honor this day as well.
I hope you all had a great time over the Thanksgiving holiday. I know it is always nice to be able to step back, enjoy family and friends, and get away from the work for a few days in order to recharge the batteries a bit. Be sure to take some time to check in with students as you ramp up for the next three weeks of instruction. Taking a few minutes to gauge where they are will help you chart the path that will get the most out of both you and your
I wonder how the idea of Halloween even started! Too many theories have been tossed around but there should be a reason why it started. I recently found out that it was a custom of the Romans that had been passed down to this generation. Apparently, they worshipped Samhain, lord of the dead.
Halloween and the Day of the Dead take two different approaches to dealing with the dead. Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival Samhain. The festival celebrated the end of the harvest when the stock of supplies was taken. On October 31st, they believed the worlds of the living and dead would meet and destroy crops. The festivals involved bonfires to attract bats, and the people would wear masks to appease evil spirits.
WIIFM Statement: Most people today celebrate this holiday. If you chose to dress up, or hand out candy, or even just use it as an excuse to have a big party. But most people have no idea how it originated and why it is so big today. Credibility: I have celebrated halloween ever since I was born. My parents would dress me up when I was a baby and I would pick out my costumes every year after.
