Throughout American history, women have been treated as if they were of a lesser importance, this being ultimately true when speaking of slave women. With the feelings and beliefs of women being tossed to the side, it is easy to see how women enslaved could easily lose their dignity during slavery. This fight for sanity is prevalent in Harriet Ann Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl as well as Mark Twain’s “A True Story.” Through the never ending hope, the importance of family, and the inner fight slave women had, the women in these particular works were able to maintain a spark of faith to get them through each day. In Twain’s “A True Story”, Aunt Rachel’s hope is entrusted in the Union army. She believes her own son has escaped slavery and has landed in the north. “What I come for is beca’se if he got away and got up Norf whar you gemmen comes from, you might ‘a’ seen him, maybe, an’ could tell me so as I could fine him ag’in” (258-259). Although the soldiers did not recognize the man Rachel was speaking of, Rachel still had hope that her son was looking for her just as she was for him. Brent’s grandmother is also very hopeful in Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl after the sale of her son. “His sale was a terrible blow to my grandmother; but she was naturally hopeful, and she went to work with renewed energy, trusting in time to be able to purchase some of her children” (128). Hope of a future freedom with loving family members are what got these women through each day, even though they knew the odds were not in their favor. I have been reading a book that I am enjoying it. The name of the book is the Incidents in the life of a slave Girl. Harriet Ann Jacobs was born a slave in Edenton, North Carolina in 1813. The book talks about a girl that she did not know she was a slave, but later on, she has found out that she is a slave. She explores the struggles and sexual abuse that female slaves faced on plantations as well as their efforts to practice motherhood and protect their children when their children might be sold away.
In Harriet Ann Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, a personal memoir, Jacobs tells her story about her experiences as a slave and her son followed escape from slavery. The story was written with no effort to disguise her political message. From the excerpt we read, it can easily be seen that she wants to do everything she can to help the millions of people who are still slaves. “Jacobs was very family-oriented and relationships were the main focus of her life” (InscriptionsJournal 3). This is proven many times as she talks about her grandmother and kids and their well-being.
Many minority groups were vulnerable to enslavement placed upon them by white Americans throughout the 19th century. In the episodic autobiographies Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, An American Slave written by Fredrick Douglass and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl written by Harriet Jacobs, both authors present the physiological manipulations associated with slavery. Douglass's and Jacob’s experiences suggest that slaves endured a continuous treatment of brutality, loneliness, and sexual abuse. Slave-owners deprived slaves of positive human qualities because they (slave-owners) became divested from their sense of identity. The dehumanizing institution of slavery caused slave-owners to conform to social roles instituted by society and forced slaves to suffer from learned hopelessness.
At the age of five, she witnessed the atrocity of a male slave being whipped to death. This monstrosity can be seen in the picture of a slave’s scarred back; seeing this, one can only imagine how it affected Sarah. Only three years later, the slave girl her father had assigned “constant companion,” suddenly died. Sarah was compelled to lobby for equal rights for women because of her lack of education as a young woman. She dreamed of continuing her education, but this was denied to her by her father because she was a woman.
People who go through similar tragic events often have very different perspectives about rather similar experiences. There are many reasons for people’s stories to different even if they are about the exact same event. People perceive things differently based on things they have been through, how good their memory is, and what their attitude is towards the subject. The stories Slave Narratives by Fredrick Douglass and Incident in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Ann Jacobs are both about the writer’s experiences as slaves, yet they are very different. The main differences include their masters, their placement as slaves, and what drove them towards freedom.
In today’s world, we learn about the harsh lives that slaves had to endure and how mistreated they were their entire lives. It’s often hard to imagine what it would have been like and how they coped with their terrible lives. Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs discuss how they were able to find hope and comfort through the toughest of times. Through the harsh reality of slavery, slaves had the comfort of family, friends, and God to give them hope to one day have freedom. Family was a large comfort and a little bit of an incentive for slaves who were fortunate enough to have their family near them.
Throughout the beatings, hunger, separation, depression, and constant pain of slavery, hope and humanity are lost when slaves lack defiance. With humanity in tact, slaves desire and fight for what they deserve: a necessity to life, a universal, God-given right, freedom. The fighters, the risk-takers, and the persisters, become the survivors. Resistance is the path slaves choose in the slave narratives, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, by Harriet Jacobs’ and, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, by Frederick Douglass’. The rebellious spirit helps slaves survive by reminding them of their humanity and rightful desire to attain their freedom.
The lives of everyone were impacted during the time of slavery. African Americans faced daily obstacles in their lives while being considered as property. In the excerpt from “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” published by Harriet Jacobs, and the interview “Charity Anderson Mobile, Alabama” the story of Charity Anderson, both reflections from former slaves, reveal opposing points of view of their unjust lives as slaves by their treatment while considered slaves, and their differing levels of education. Not all slaves were treated the same, even though many shed blood on the plantations of their masters. Treatment differed on the master, and treatment was not cruel all the time.

In the book, “Incidents in the Life of Slave Girl”, Linda Brent tell us experienced of her life in past twenty years in slavery with her master Dr. Flint, and her jealous Mistress.

Harriet Ann Jacobs is the first Afro-American female writer to publish the detailed autobiography about the slavery, freedom and family ties. Jacobs used the pseudonym Linda Brent to keep the identity in secret. In the narrative, Jacobs appears as a strong and independent woman, who is not afraid to fight for her rights. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was published in 1961, but was unveiled almost 10 years later due to the different slave narrative structure. Frequently, the slave narratives were written by men where they fight against the slavery through literacy by showing their education.
Similarly, Harriet Jacobs’ “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Seen Years Concealed” follows the early childhood of a young girl born into slavery. The first few chapters lay out the foundation of the book, particularly highlighting stories of her parents, first mistress, and the new family whom she later served. When reading these wonderful
Harriet Jacobs and Sojourner Truth are women who face adversity categorized in an invisible sub-group, making it difficult for black women to compete in the world. This sub-group is known as intersectionality. Black women struggle with the perception being inferior placing them at the bottom of the social class. Jacobs and Truth, however, share their experiences to other men and women allowing them to be aware of this invisible group. They willingly chose to speak out against this discrimination.
After having read both Frederick Douglass’s Narrative and Harriet Jacobs’s Incident 1. How were Douglass and Jacobs similar and different in their complaints against slavery? What accounts for these differences? In both the inspiring narratives of Narrative in the Life of Fredrick Douglass by Frederick Douglass’s and in Incidents in the life of a slave girl by Harriet Jacobs the respective authors demonstrate the horrors and disparity of slavery in there own ways.
