Hercules film/book comparison Edith Hamilton’s Mythology portrays the story of Hercules with a perfect complexity that can be understood by even the simplest of minds. Of all the tales told in Greek mythology, Hercules surpasses them all as one the greatest heroes of ancient Greece. According to the novel, Hercules is a story about an exceedingly strong demi-god who accomplishes a plethora of tasks never completed by man before including, the twelve labors he must forsee to purify his soul after killing his family. The Hollywood version starring Dwayne Johnson takes the basic knowledge from Greek mythology and creates a storyline with a more realistic rendition. In the movie he is rumored to be half god and half man but, in …show more content…
The movie is about a single mission completed by Hercules rather than a whole life story even though it includes background and a meaningful lesson. Perhaps the greatest difference between the Hollywood remake and the actual book is the murder of Hercules’ wife Megara and their kids. Since movies take a lot of dedication and money the screenwriters had to take the original and make it as interesting as they could. Because of this the movie’s version of their death is due to three savage wolves made to resemble the mythological character, Cerberus, Hades guard dog of the underworld while Hercules’ was drugged. In both pieces Hercules is unaware of his actions but, for different reasons. In the book he actually does kill his wife and children because he was under the magic of Hera. The book includes other accomplishments of Hercules’ life when the movie only focuses on this one part in his journey. The book also reveals his attempt at suicide and ultimate death. As previously stated, because the movie must be interesting the writers construct it so that Hercules’ can finally overcome his final deed and be set free from his haunted past when in the original story he dies and gets married for the third time to Hera’s daughter Hebe while in
In Greek Mythology there was always a monster to be slain by the hero figure. This one specifically, was the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. The monster was called the Hydra, known for terrorizing farmers and livestock around Lake Lerna; therefore, hearing of this, King Tiryns sent Hercules to kill the Hydra. Filled with courage, Hercules had no doubt he could slay the hydra and complete yet another trial. Upon seeing the Hydra, its heads were above the clouds and only came down for a worthy battle.
He is welcomed with open arms by his father and mother to stay and be with the Gods but denies to stay on Earth with Meg, the woman he loves. Hercules is a true hero and now must return home back to the ordinary world of Thebes, a changed man. The journey he faced not only changed him but gained him so much knowledge, faced Hades terrible dangers and even death on more than one occasion. Hercules looks forward to living his new life with Meg as a mortal man. He has a new hope and understanding of who he is as a person.
Also there is a Disney film Hercules which tells the story of Hercules. The movie shows all his achievements and how he came to be. Chapter 9: It’s More Than Just Rain or
In the movie Hercules tries to do good deeds to be a god like his family and to be with them on Mount Olympus and in the myth Hercules tries to do 10 tasks to appease Hera, so she can leave him alone. Even though both the movie and the myth is about Hercules; he is a different type of hero archetype for different scenarios. For the movie and the myth I am going to write about what kind of hero archetype Hercules is for each of them. For the myth Hercules Archetype is a Seeker.
Though there are differences that are noted in the film and book versions, the basic storyline remains the same as told by Apollonius. A similar thing that both the film and the book have in common is that Jason wants to find the Golden Fleece. Another similar thing about the film and the book is that Jason got the best men and ship in the world. The ship was named "Argo" in the book like in the film.
The epic “The Odyssey” by Homer is similar to the film Hercules. In the movie Hercules takes part in a long journey in which he was trying to become a God. Hercules had to face many challenges on his way to trying and becoming a God. The first value I noticed was Hercules put his hand on the Hollywood walk.
Percy Jackson and the lightning thief is about the offspring of poseidon and a mortal, going on a quest with his friends to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt. The bolt went missing and Percy Jackson is accused of taking it. This is an excellent book that was made into a film. Though the film was good it was very different from the book.
Mythology is a collection of myths and stories belonging to a particular belief system or cultural tradition. Even though there are a variety of different myths taught around the world, Greek mythologies are more famously known for their fruitful stories and complex relationships. Greek mythologies mostly concern their gods and heroes such as; Hercules, Achilles, Theseus, and Perseus. Of the many Greek heroes, Jason is the most heroic due to the fact that although he is abandoned at a very young age, he is still able to survive, also he proves to Hera the goddess who hated heroes that he is worthy to be favoured by her, and he completes the impossible quest of the Golden Fleece. Jason is born in a very superior family, having a father who is the lawful king of Iolcus.
In the myth the trainer of hero’s is Chiron, he is a centaur (half man half horse). In the film, Hercules trainer is Philoctetes (a satyr). In the myth Heracles had two wives, his first wife Meg and his two daughters were killed because he was driven mad by Hera. His second wife Deianira, was tricked by a foe of Heracles and ends up killing Heracles.
Hercules shows that he is a hero through the task he complete within in the movie and the Myth. In the end Hercules makes it back to Mt.Olympus in both stories and he completes the missions that were given to
Hercules is a greek god myth born of the almighty god Zeus. Hercules had superhuman strength, which he is now most famous for his 12 labors. And even though those 12 labors are the same they are described and done in many different ways. Which means both the graphic novel and film version of Hercules include literacy characteristics of characters, setting, and Denouement; yet both have such differences as well. For an example, in the graphic novel he goes cytopathic and kills his wife and children while in the film he gets married and doesn’t have any kids at all.
Defeating the villain, saving the princess, and conquering fears; These are all plot archetypes of well known myths, legends, fables, and fairy tales. The myth of Hercules, a Greek demigod hero, is a shining example of this where these archetypes are demonstrated. Hercules followed the three main parts of the hero’s journey archetype in his classic story passed down from generation to generation in ancient Greek culture; The call to action, the trials, and the return home to a changed world.
In this analysis my main focus would be: why Hercules was famous in Greek Myth? , how did he impact the world and its society? and what lessons can be learnt from him? Hercules, the son of Zeus, was very famous in Greek mythology because he slayed the unbeatable nine headed hydra and the famous Nemean lion. When he was a kid he strangled and killed two venomous snakes with his bare hands and also he was the only warrior in Greek myth who was half god and half human.
Though they are similar, they have many differences between each other. Hercules was unfathomably strong. He was the strongest man on the Earth and could defeat anything he encountered. On the other hand, Theseus was such a great thinker.
One of the differences between the myth and the movie can be seen right in the beginning. Hercules is the son of Zeus and Hera, and not Zeus and one of his many mortal wives. Hera even cares about him, and so does Zeus. They have a party and everything.
