Movies from the past and present, maybe even the future, all have the hero of the story follow a 12 step journey to reach their end result. This twelve step process is called the Hero’s Journey, invented by Joseph Campbell. It allows the hero to start at a status quo, go from an ordinary world to an imaginary world and then come out full form. The hero 's journey allows to compare characters paths and the lesson that they learned . In the book Odyssey, written in the 8th Century BC by Homer, Odysseus follows a similar journey to a more modern heroine, Moana in the movie Moana, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. On the other hand, Moana, is a young girl who tries to help save her island, Motonui, and her people and family by using her water powers to bring back the heart of Futi, but also experiences some trouble on her journey home. Throughout their trials, both Moana and Odysseus have a special mentor to help them throughout the tough parts of their journey. For instance, Moana gets the help from a friend named Maui, a demigod, who had stolen the heart of Te Fiti. In the beginning, Moana’s family, especially her father, are very strict about her going out into the ocean alone. But, her grandmother realizes that she is the one that can help the island from dying. One day, Moana’s grandmother falls ill, she tells her that once the Heart of Te Fiti is removed the world will become a deadly place and that the person who had the heart was Maui. She also gives Moana a necklace which allows her to communicate with the water; however, she has no idea about the power or how to

Odysseus’s Tumultuous Journey Heroes in today’s literature often take on difficult challenges that put themselves in constant danger to better themselves. Joseph Campbell came out with a book in 1949 called “A Hero with a Thousand Faces” which he introduced the “Hero’s Journey” formula that Odysseus closely follows. The Odyssey is a Greek mythology following Odysseus, a Trojan War hero who faces many dangers trying to get back to his homeland of Ithaca. At his homeland of Ithaca suitors are eating out his home and trying to marry his wife while Telemachus sets out to find his father, but eventually comes back unsuccessful. Finally, Odysseus comes home and takes back his home and family.
The movie “Moana” by Ron Clements and John Musker shows a young girl going on a dangerous mission to save the people living in her village. Unfortunately, the fishermen of the island were not able to catch fish and the crops were not growing. Moana tries to convince her father to sail on the other side of the ocean, but it was too dangerous. Ignoring the rules of her father, Moana decides to sail by herself across the ocean, to persuade a man named Maui, to return the heart of Te Fiti’s. Providing a small supply of food for herself, Moana finds Maui and together, they sail across the ocean to find the heart.
Moana and the Effects of Polynesia Misrepresentations to Young Children Moana is seen by most children as a whimsical animated film about courage that is set in Polynesia and is based on a traditional story. The main character, Moana loves the sea and is the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. The demigod Maui stole Te Fiti's heart, causing the fishermen on her island to be unable to catch fish and the crops begin to fail. The island can only be healed if Maui returns Te Fiti's heart, so Moana embarks on a journey across the Pacific to convince him to do so. However, despite the charade put up by Disney, there are some concerning things about the movie that should be taken into account.
In The Odyssey, the character Odysseus can be considered a hero because he demonstrates many characteristics that are attributable to most heroes. After the battle at Troy, Odysseus strives to sail back to his homeland (Ithaca); however, he encounters some issues along the way and Poseidon attempts to make it impossible for Odysseus to return home. At the beginning of this journey, Odysseus wants to make it back to Ithaca with all of his crew alive. This selfless goal displays Odysseus acting for the greater good because he knows that these men have families that depend on them and would like for them to come home. Along the journey home, Odysseus and his crew come across a cyclops and become trapped in the cyclops’ cave.
How would you handle a journey which seems never-ending? In Gillan Cross’s interpretation of The Odyssey, we notice several events that have had a domino effect upon each other. As the story went on we noticed how certain events categorize themselves into different parts of the Hero’s Journey (12 stages). Then as the story progresses we see archetypes that reinforce the idea that The Odyssey is a monomyth. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus goes through difficult obstacles and decisions.
After setting sail we see a case of Odysseus 's enemy the god of the sea Poseidon return and disrupt the journey by producing a storm that nearly kills him. However, we see two allies come to aid one being goddess Ino who gives Odysseus a veil that will keep him safe as well Athena who rescues him from the jagged rocks. In conclusion this book five of the Oddessy we see a prime example of a hero who in the special world, encounters tests, allies, and enemies.
The Heroes Journey, identified by American scholar Joseph Campbell, is a pattern of narrative that describes the typical adventure of the main hero, whether that be a fiction or nonfiction hero. The first step is the call to adventure, where something shakes up the hero’s current situation and the hero starts experiencing change. Consequently, this theory is also applied to the fictional hero Odysseus in The Odyssey and the real-life hero Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist. In The Odyssey, Odysseus embarks on a 10-year voyage from Troy to Ithaca and encounters many monsters along the way including a gigantic Cyclops described as “…a brute so huge, he seemed no man at all…” (9 89-90).
When creating a story, many great minds will use a pattern to enthrall readers and shape them into a hero. Established by Joseph Campbell, The Hero 's Journey is the iconic template many utilize to plan their imaginative tale. The Hero’s Journey is the cycle in which the protagonist ventures into an unknown world where he or she will go through a series of adventures and learn moral lessons. Heroes in ancient myths such as Homer 's epic poem, The Odyssey follows this formula since the protagonist, Odysseus, faces hardships throughout different regions that ultimately change his once arrogant character. Throughout Homer 's monomyth, Odysseus undergoes challenges that teach him the importance of humility.
Heroism, tends to be difficult to define and remarkably ambiguous in literary works. In the Odyssey, however, Homer clearly defines a hero as a humble, determined, and loyal individual; thus, according to Homer, it is not enough to claim to be a hero, but it is also important to exhibit those qualities that Homer values as heroism. Odysseus, despite claiming heroism, upholds these traits inconsistently, as seen in his taunting of Polyphemus. In contrast, Telemachus, Odysseus’ overlooked son, dramatically grows up over the course of the epic and ultimately reveals his truly heroic qualities by the end of the poem. Thus, because Odysseus claims to be a hero, but fails to remain humble, determined, and loyal throughout the epic, he is not a hero.
The Epic Hero of The Odyssey The Odyssey is a tale of a great hero trying to get home. An epic hero. An epic hero is a courageous and honorable person. Homer’s character Odysseus exemplifies this in many ways.
At a very young age she has shown a large amount of empathy rather than self indulgence. She goes beyond that as well by shielding the turtle with a leaf, rather than grabbing it and tossing it to the ocean, giving the turtle a chance to try and get the ocean by himself-with her help. Because of her humanity and in her vulnerability, she was able to reach Te Fiti. She was the only one to realize that when it came to returning the heart, it wasnt about defeating Te Ka with brute force, rather it was about seeing who she really was. Moana’s willingness to sacrifice herself for her people over a large theory of Te Ka and Te Fiti being the same person only solidifies the ocean’s reasoning as to why it chose
