Keith Cowboy, rapper with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five created the term “Hip-Hop”. He and his fellow rappers Lovebug Starski and DJ Hollywood used the term while it was still called disco rap. Some early examples are a track by Grandmaster Flash called The Adventures of Grand Master (1981). Also in 1982 Afrika Bambaataa’s Planet Rock had a fusion of hip-hop and electro. Rammellzee and K-Rob’s “Beat Bop” in 1983 was a slow jam which marked by the influence of rock music. This generation used drum machines to make the music better in many of the songs in 1980. The Ronland 808 model became more advanced and is used a lot in this day (David).
The lyrics of rappers also evolved as well these metaphorical lyrics over more complex multi-layered instrumentals over more complex lyrical styles in the 1970s. Artists such as Melle Mel, Rakim, Chuck D, and KRS-Une transformed hip-hop into a mature art form. Some rappers became mainstream pop performers. Kurtis appeared in a Sprite commercial which marked the first hip-hop musician to represent major product. Also hip-hop in the 1980s spread out to dozens of countries. An example is Beat-boxing which reached Japan, Australia, and South Africa.
Hip-hop is defined as a contemporary style of music that includes rap, a lifestyle marked by baggy clothes, idiomatic speech, and break-dancing.
Keith Cowboy is the one often credited for the term hip hop. He was part of the rap group The Furious Five. This would actually benefit Cowboy as he started using the hop as part of his performance.
Pop culture is in constant evolution molded by the people. Over the generations the style of music in the entertainment industry has transformed dramatically. Music styles have evolved from smooth blues, the Beatles, rock, and presently pop and hip-hop/rap. Many rap artists today include themes of money, women, and drugs in their lyrics. Christian rap is a non-secular way to enjoy high quality music while receiving positive messages from the artist.
Rock emerged from rhythm and blues. Music similar to jazz was mostly played by black artists. Disk jockey Alan Freed was the first to introduce this music and called it rock and roll. It began to attract teenagers. Bill Haley, one of the first rock and roll icons, wrote a song called “Rock Around the Clock”.
You can simply define the two aspects of hip hop music as a DJ and an MC. An MC would rap, while a DJ would provide a beat via their electronic equipment or by creating a beat-box with their voice. There are certain musical characteristics that originated from or solely exist in hip hop. One of those is turntablism. Turntables are used in hip hop to sample and scratch, which shapes the sound of the recording to the DJ 's desired effect.
At the same time, hip hop continued to be assimilated into other genres of popular music, an example being Neo soul.. Hip hop became a best-selling music genre in the mid-1990s and the top selling music genre by 1999. The most successful styles of the 90s were the hardcore rap of New York and the gangsta rap and G-Funk of Los Angeles. New York's Wu-Tang Clan created one of the first hardcore styles when they rapped about gangster life over swinging hip hop beats with samples from martial-arts movies. In 1994 a young rapper named Nas released his first album Illmatic.
What was striking was how Grandmaster flash was able to walk in the room and still stay in tune with the beat, expressing the level of skill it took to be considered a master and pushing back on the idea that hip hop was a non serious form of art. MCing in hip hop was basically when an individual would say words, and partner with the DJ, to increase crowd involvement and make the party better. In the TV show, Grandmaster flash referred to an MC as a wordsmith. In the get down, episode 1, Zeke acts as a hype man for Shaolin after he has a BBoying battle with the competition, and raps only in conjunction with Shaolin. This is ironic, since as hip hop became more popular and commercialized, record companies and the audience began revering the MCs more, with some companies
¨If Hip Hop has the ability to corrupt minds, it also has the ability to uplift them.¨ Hip hop music, also called rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by African Americans consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. Mainstream hip hop culture is also filled with misogyny and negative images of women. These artists are unaware that sexism has been forced onto them through the brainwashing from the media, which is controlled by a patriarchal society. Conversely, feminism is the belief that both genders should have equal power.
"Most people think its sex, money, and drugs but Hip-Hop is about lyrics, storytelling, and everybody having a different style. That's just another idea of beautiful, being yourself and creating music that represents you and what you like." -Rapsody. Hip-Hop started to be considered a culture down in 1973. The birth of hip hop took place in the Bronx, New York , during a time of poverty , Initially when Hip Hop first came about no one would have imagined how vastly and quickly it grew nor would they have predicted the influence on society it has today. This particular enriched and animated, genre of music went from the local backwoods of the projects to a multi millionaire industry. If you ask most people today their definition of Hip Hop , generally they would say a cool rhyming scheme with a hook and a catchy tune, which is not too far off. But it is much deeper than that .Hip hop is a form of expression like a factory , if you may .
