In this practicum I will narrate an interview that was done with a Hispanic parent. I will describe her and her family structure. I will also elaborate on her involvements in her children academics, and teacher parent relationship. Also better ways to encourage parents to get involved in their children education will be added, and how teachers can assist with making the parents feel welcomed inside of the classroom.
On Monday November 14, I asked a parent at a childcare center would they mind having a thirty-minute interview with Ms. Key, concerning their child’s education and parent teacher partnership. She felt parent involvement is needed however, due to parents working schedules, this could be hard. Once we concluded the interview I thought of better ways the daycare and school could involve parents. Since the holidays are coming up the teachers and office staff can create an art exhibit to display children’s art work. This can be done after hours and a light refreshment could be served. However, any school event that includes parents have to be done and announced prior to the event. Therefore, emails, newsletters, sign-up sheets, or phone call reminders can be given a month in advance. (Scully, Barbour, & King, 2015)
A great tool teachers can use to assist the parents with academic involvement is to always have an open door policy. Teachers should encourage all parents to volunteer or advocate for all students. Reminding parents that fifteen minutes you spent with your child or someone else’s might change the child’s outlook on their education. Finally encourage parents to ask question if they don’t understand, and find out ways to better help them understand their child’s
The Latino lifestyle creates a strong bond together, and most the time are all closely together. The positive side was well explained and described in the book. For example, whenever there is a need of an advice or counsel, a Latino would go to the family and ask them according to their experiences, an explanation on how they handled their issues. In addition, Schaefer said that most Latinos use their family as resources to support them throughout their lifetime (2014). Unfortunately, a negative factor that comes with familism is turning down opportunities, in order to not get separated from the family (Schaefer, 2014).
Born and raised in Santa Barbra California, Peter Giovani Petatan have lived 21 years of his life in the U.S. along with his mother and father who were born and raised in Mexico. Although born and raised in California Peter and his family currently reside in Macon, GA. Now as a college student this has been the first time he has ever lived outside of home. Nevertheless, he feels as if he’s able to adapt to this new environment effortlessly in terms of the university and community.
The negative stereotype that Latinos are indefinitely stuck in poverty is created by the tendency to average the progress of new immigrants to those of older immigrants. “Since Latino immigration continues, averaging together the poverty rates or homeownership levels of large numbers of people who arrived recently with those who have been here for decades can provide a skewed view of progress,” (America’s Assimilating Hispanics). However, longitudinal studies, when properly measured and displayed, show that Latino immigrants are making economic progress. Latino assimilation transcends the realms of politic and economic to touch culture, as English language acquisition shows. Supporters of anti- Latino immigration legislation tend to cite the prevalence of Spanish-speaking communities across the U.S, and even North Carolina, as evidence that Latino immigrants are failing to assimilate.
Due to a legacy of racism, economic and work barriers, as well as limited education, the LC minority parents didn’t feel comfortable challenging or approaching educators on formal matters. Overall the study reports that LC minority parents are less likely to create a good relationship with members of the school system and depend on teachers to guide and direct the education of their children. By the teachers being unfriendly, and the parents being too timid to approach them, the students aren’t receiving the attention they might need. These students are left to learn for themselves, while having strong relationships with their educators could actually benefit
Being a child of immigrant parents is not easy. You are constantly living in the fear that one day you’ll wake up and you parents won’t be there with you anymore. Specially now that we have a new president, things are getting more challenging. But don’t get me wrong, I live a happy life. I am proud to call myself a Latina.
I come from an authentic Hispanic family, who is traditional in plenty distinct aspects. We treasure all the memories that have occurred to all of us and we laugh about the embarrassing moments we all had. We hold traditional customs and we accept new traditions as well. All of us are over protective of each and every family member, meaning that if anyone in the family has a problem we will not stop until it is fixed. To every family member, family is always first.
One of the toughest adjustments, having been born to Mexican parents, is migrating to an unknown country where traditions and languages differ from one 's own. Though many pursue an education and strive for a better life, the purpose behind an immigrant, like myself, differs from the typical American. Immigrants strive for a life that was once impossible, going to school is not only to attain an education, but to better prove that we can also become successful regardless of our traditions and skin color. I lived in a country for over fifteen years, fearing deportation, not only losing a home, but potentially saying goodbye to a bright future. Although many feel empathy for Mexican-Americans, it is undeniably difficult to truly comprehend the immense trauma children and even adults undergo upon experiencing racism and prejudice.
The novel I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sánchez portrays a stark contrast between the personality of the protagonist, Julia, and the cultural expectations imposed upon her as a Mexican-American woman. I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is a semi-autobiographical novel, drawing from author Erika L. Sánchez's own experiences growing up as a Mexican-American woman in Chicago. The novel tackles a variety of complex themes, including mental illness, family dynamics, and the immigrant experience in America. In the beginning of the story Julia’s sister Olga gets in a accedent with a truck and is run over. Julia’s mom thought of Olga as a perfect daughter and after Olga’s passing, Julias mom is constantly comparing Julia to Olga in every aspect of life.
Being Hispanic has taught me a whole world of things. It has taught me that the world is not what you expect it to be. Going to a public school and being th minority is completely different than going to a see my cousins where every thing is different. The way we talk, the food we eat. Its all different.
Also, parents who become involved with their child’s education will have a better understanding as to why education is important. “For 15 years, PIQE has developed and widely implemented a model for increasing parent involvement in K-12 schools where parent participation has been difficult to achieve.” (Project, 2002). Furthermore, mobility is an issue as to why some children do not get a proper education. “Frequent change of environment keeps the student in a constant state of flux” Reyes, P., Garza, E., & Trueba, E. T.
The increasing numbers of Latino youth who obtain college degrees are become active in politics, with the biggest trend of Latino population is youth and growth we can only hope for even more support in politics. “For the first time ever, Latinos accounted for one in ten votes cast nationwide in the presidential election, and Obama recorded the highest ever vote total for any presidential candidate among Latinos, at 75%” (Barreto and Segura 145). The Latino vote is becoming a crucial element to politics because of their size in population. . “While turnout declined nationally from 2008 to 2012 (by 2%), among Latinos there was a 28% increase in votes cast in 2012 (from 9.7 million to 12.5 million) and Obama further increased his vote share among Latinos in 2012 compared to 2008” (Barreto and Segura 145). What does it mean to be Hispanic in America? By Ishita Mishra When you look at a large mass of people, a large portion of them are Hispanic. Hispanics are all over America, but sometimes aren’t treated as equals. In fact, many Hispanic figures have helped shape America into the country that it is today.
An immigrant family wants the best for everyone lives, however moving to a new country brings struggles. There struggles include finding a home, a good paying job, avoiding to be deported, being separated ,and continuing their education. Immigrants expect a better life because their old home and country did have much benefits as the new country gives them. The advantage of an immigrant family is family values which tends them to be closer. Disadvantages of an immigrant family are the struggles that were first mentioned and including that they face other people calling them a threat.
We can notice students ' academic achievement are increasing when parents involve in the education of their children (Ramirez, 2003). On the other hand, some parents do not make any effort to help their children at home although "the family is the most influential context for learning" (Copple & Bredekamp, 2009). Maybe they think teachers have a better understanding of how to educate their children, therefore they avoid of becoming involved in the classroom or talking with teachers too much. As Latino parents mention that, we have to help our children in every way possible.
